Verizon Wireless exclusively launching Samsung DROID Prime in October

Exclusive

BGR has exclusively learned from a close source of ours that Verizon Wireless has passed on offering the Samsung GALAXY S II in favor of something even better. We reported last week that Verizon isn’t going to sell the GALAXY S II, and we have now been told why. Apparently, “Verizon doesn’t think the Samsung GALAXY S II will be competitive with the iPhone 5 when it launches.” Instead, not only is Verizon launching the Samsung DROID Prime, a device that is sure to be the new flagship Android phone ahead of the holidays, but the company will have the handset as an exclusive. The DROID Prime is expected to be the first smartphone to launch with Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich,” and we have been told the model number is SCH-i515. According to our source, the phone should launch sometime in October. Verizon Wireless did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

i was totally hoping this would debut on sprint so i could leave verizon. there service is way too expensive

Hope this is only a rumor. The Nexus Prime should be on multiple carriers. Verizon can brand it as a Droid if they want.

  • Enoel69

Whats all the talk of the Droid Prime as being the Nexus. The Droid Prime is no Nexus..it is simply Verizons and only Verizons flagship ICS phone but lets get it str8 it is not a Nexus. Google will do their own outing of the Nexus 3. Maybe the Samsung I9250 a 4.65″ Super Amoled HD ICS device might turn out to be the real new Nexus that will be released to Tmo, Sprint and Att. Or as i have always thought…HTC might be the sleeper OEM tapped by El Goog to give us an N1 type on steroids Nexus 3. Either way it shakes out…i hope Google has something special in-store for us all vanilla android lovers.

I was thinking the same thing. Esp since Google just bought Motorola. If anything Nexus would partner up with Motorola not Samsung.

Please no bloatware Verizon. I’m only asking for 1 stock Android, no nonsense phone.

as much as  would love for this to end up being vanilla nexus on big red, I just don’t see it happening. It will end up being a rebranded GS2 and thats it. The fascinate 2 or whatever the sequal is to the last galaxy phone on verizon. Nothing to see here. Big red would NEVER allow a bloat-free vanilla experience on their network, they love to control things too much.

They did it with Apple’s iPhone 4, right?  Why couldn’t it happen with pressure from Google?

      • Keith McMaugh

They don’t have the clout to make those kinds of demands.  The Prime will probably be superior to an iPhone, but the masses want their precious with an Apple logo on it.  Ever notice how iPhone users always refer to their phones as “my iPhone”, but even the hardcore Android folks just call their phones “my phone”?

The Million Dollar Question….Is the Droid Prime the Nexus Prime??? Or are we going to see the Nexus 3 in November???

  • Liam

This was reported elsewhere not too long ago.
On that site it was well pointed out that this is the DROID Prime, not the Nexus Prime. Hence this may simply be Verizon’s Droid variant of the Nexus phone.

This is the dumbest rumor regarding a nexus phone. Why would Google release their next os on a cdma network only. Most of the world uses GSM. That would be stupid of them. This phone will be the next DEV phone. So it makes no sense not releasing a GSM version. So your source in wrong buddy.

“Verizon doesn’t think the Samsung GALAXY S II will be competitive with the iPhone 5 when it launches.”
The sgs2 is an impressive phone, how good is this new iPhone going to be, and what does verizon know that we don’t?

  • Delacy Sanford

any reason why they call it a droid prime and not nexus prime…any reason to believe that this phone may be locked???

  • Lolcats

wow.  god i hate at&t.  what a crapfest.

Not gonna happen on VZW.  Also, using the DROID moniker reeks of carrier/manufacturer crapware.

I love iOS but if the new 5 is not LTE or does not sport a substantially bigger screen, I will likely go with the Prime, Bionic, or HD.

Yeah, what Derrick -Lex- said… WiMax is a big problem for Sprint. Not so much in a city, where more 4G lives today. But they’re up at 2500MHz — that’s the real issue. That has far more free air loss than Verizon’s current or AT&T’s future LTE, both at 700MHz. And 2500MHz is also bad for wall penetration, and horrible for foliage penetration. I live in a forest — I’ll never have acceptable Sprint 4G coverage here.

There’s also a power advantage for LTE on the handsets. Maybe not yet, since every new radio protocol sucks power when the chips are new. But wait a few generations. WiMax uses the same OFDM modulation that’s used for 3G, WiFi, etc…. this breaks signals up into hundreds or thousands of low-speed “chips”. Ideally, some chips are high, some low, so the output averages out constant. The problem is, sometimes the chips all go one way, and require the phone to be able to amplify at that level. And even when they line up average, the amplifiers still have to be capable of supporting the peak. So the transmit amplifier sucks the power needed for peaks… it has a very high PAPR (Peak to Average Power Ratio). And thus, 4G will always eat batteries, compares to 3G. On WiMax.

LTE was designed with a totally different upstream modulation, SC-FDMA, which used a Fourier transform to produce a signal with a single carrier, and a far lower PAPR. So for the same average power upstream, an LTE device may be using only 1/4-1/3 the power of a WiMax device. Maybe not today… as I said, in early digital radio protocol designs, you may just suck power… the digital radio may be taking a big chunk of the power. But as with all things digital, eventually, the load of the radio protocol chip will be inconsequential. The one thing you can’t change is the power amplifier: 1/2W is always 1/2W, pretty much. Once the tech is at that point, LTE will have a significant advantage over WiMax.

For awhile, anyway… the WiMax people have already announced that some future version of WiMax will go to SC-FDMA modulation for upstream transmissions. Hey, it’s happened before… the GSM people adopted procotols very similar to CDMA2000 when they added the 3G protocols to the standard.

I am still wondering if I should get the Bionic, because I am lagging behind with my og droid. Dont get me wrong it is a grand old device, but it has 256mb of ram, not even a qhd display (something worse), and a shitty qwerty keyboard. Though the Bionic is actually being released on my bday, so im thinking get it with costco and then return it if the prime does come out in october. That way all i have to do is pay the difference of say 100 dollars.

  • Groove_us

LOL get WHATEVER PHONE U LIKE AND ENJOY IT WHO REALLY CARES!!!

  • poopieondahead

I like how there is a picture of a NS. I love my NS4G, such a beautiful phone. I dont live in an area with 4g currently so i dont really care. Plus im in places that have wireless constantly so my phone rarely sees 3g speeds. But this “Droid Prime” will most likely be the same as a Nexus Prime just with verizons bloatware and later updates. BTW its just a phone, if i actually need to use the internet for a search that may take more than 2 mins, ill just use a fucking computer. And I cant wait to see iOS turn into Windows mobile.

I don’t care what it’s called as long as it has DUAL CORE+LTE+ICS+SAMOLED+1GB RAM+VERIZON+UNLOCKED

  • Chris Eckeard

    I’d like an iPrime5

  • Samuel Tillman

Makes sense. Verizon launched Motorola DROID which debuted Android 2.0, and the Motorola Xoom which debuted Android 3.0. As you can see, Verizon has a history of debuting breakthrough Android updates, so I don’t see why now would be any different.

  • Troy Safranski

Verizon makes Sprint look horrible. Wimax blows compared to lte. Lte gets about 2x faster speeds and thy proved it and always have a signal. That’s why Verizon is a little more expensive to have those 2 things umm ya ill pay especially if your grandfathed in and dont have data capped for unlimited. I’ve been on Sprint t-mobile and Verizon. Umm ya sticking with Verizon no hesitation.

This article sounds like the biggest crock of shit I have ever read….

there is alot of counter info that the prime will be available on multiple carriers.  It may get launched exclusively in the sense that no one else will have it for a month or two after them but i don’t believe the prime will be limited to one carrier.

  • Pimpspitta

I been on Verizon for 7 years and no matter how many times I contemplate switching carriers, someone with the other carriers gives me enough reason to stay. Plus I still have my unlimited data package to go along with my corporate discount. Not to mention I can actually make calls wherever I’m at which is the main reason for a cell “phone”. Verizons phones aren’t the best admittedly, but service including customer service is second to none!
