Samsung said to be considering webOS acquisition from HP

Business

Following rumors that Samsung was considering a purchase of Hewlett-Packard’s PC business — rumors that Samsung would later deny — DigiTimes is having another go at this potential unholy union. This time around, however, the site claims Samsung is eying HP’s webOS platform instead of its PC business. DigiTimes on Monday reported that Samsung has hired HP’s ex-vice president of PSG marketing Raymond Wah to head up Samsung’s PC business. The report goes on to claim that Samsung is also “considering purchasing webOS to compete head on against Apple and Google, according to sources from notebook players.” The South Korea-based electronics giant is clearly having issues with Android right now. Despite Google’s OS having helped Samsung climb to the No. 2 spot among global smartphone vendors, it also brought with it a flurry of patent-related lawsuits from Apple and other companies. Google just announced its intention to acquire Motorola for $12.5 billion, however, and this purchase is intended in part to help the company defend itself and Android partners against patent complaints from Apple, Microsoft and other combatants in the patent wars. Beyond that, Samsung also has its own in-house smartphone platform, bada, which is seeing success in the Asian market. Samsung declined to comment.

What a bad idea that would be.

WebOS is going to be just like the goddamn Amiga, isn’t it?

Samsung is having issues with android right now?

They have the most popular and the fastest Android phone in the world and launching the first Ice cream Sandwich phone this year.

Samsung can buy WebOS but they are not having issues with Android.

{wussy is a bald pussy}.let samsung go with webOs and leave android their money maker, in two or less years googleola will be the #1 selling phone and tablet on the market when Gspot OS release…

Oh noes, don’t Samsung. WebOS is in the tatters. Dev SDK sucks. No support from devs. Very slow uptake. UI innovations half imitated already by others and rest to be ripped as well.

Even going with Bada makes much more sense (true kernel portability, service layer separation, etc).

I really hope this comes to fruition. I love webOS- everything about it is fluid and just minimalist enough to look good but still work well. I think Samsung has the brains and brawn to keep this tradition going, while still revitalizing and exciting the developer community. If this does go forward, don’t let me down Samsung!

this could spice things up. i’m willing to bet there are many cell phone users
out there who are tired of both android and ios. just imagine hardware design
like the nexus s running webos. this would mean the full weight of samsung
behind development and progression of the software. i have more confidence
in samsung in this regard than hp. things could get infinitely more interesting.

Oh, please God, let this happen. Just thinking about webOS running on Samsung hardware makes me moist.

Lets see, samsung with it’s own os to neglect, yeah that would end well.

Good for Samsung. This would hurt Apple badly. WebOS with Samsung’s awesome hardware will leave iDevices eating Samsung’s dust. If this ends up being true. My white ip4 and my white ipad2, will be my last upgrade with Apple. It would suck that I would have to let go of all my iOS apps, but oh well.

OK, should be quite interesting to see how that turns out. Think I will hang on to my HP Touch/Droid lol.

If they do buy I hope they fix web OS so you can tether with phones running something other than web OS or at least activate adhoc connection. Complete failure on web OS part as far as I am concerned.

Stop trying to compete with Apple now! this is a death nail for all wanna be entry tablet devices.
just make a great device, price it right at launch and the rest will fall into place……then if successful, years from now you can attempt to compete. stop the arrogance by thinking anyone can launch a fully baked tablet stallion right out of the starting gate!

WebOS is kinda like Betamax.  VHS may have sucked and Betamax may have been better – but Betamax lost… WebOS is just not going to go anywhere in the market.

I loved my Palm Pilot back in the day, and would love to see something modern based off of that line of technology. But its kinda over now. Mourn the dead and move on.
