HP's PC blunder will deteriorate HP brand value, analyst says

Business

It remains to be seen whether Hewlett-Packard’s upcoming overhaul will pay off in the long run, but one things seems clear: the manner in which HP revealed its plans was ill-conceived at best. HP’s announcements sent its stock tumbling, and analysts continue to lose faith in the company as unrest builds. In a note to investors on Thursday, RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani cut his rating on HP stock to Sector Perform from Outperform, and he lowered his price target $5 to $30. Daryanani says HP’s announcement that it may spin off or sell its PC business “will accelerate the deterioration of HP’s brand and asset value,” and he thinks competitors will gain market share as a result. The analyst also believes HP’s decision to kill off its webOS device business could devalue the company’s PC division if it opts for a sale. He thinks a quick sale would be a good move for HP, though he writes that a cut in company forecast or increased buybacks are also options.

I’m just pissed that Staples messed up that sale still.

HP is just gonna be like “Well…now that you all have Touchpads, we’re back!”

Maybe it’s just one of their strategy. At this point n time , they have already discussed how to materialize their plan. It’s impossible for a company not to have a back up plan if their first strategy would sooner or later fail. I bet their marketing department are working overtime

Yeah they really blew it.  It was cold, ill-conceived, delivery was confusing and devalued everything most consumers know about the company.  What the hell where they thinking? In a rush to shift operations they destroyed the value of the entire company.  HP’s website couldn’t even maintain the load of the touchpad rush. I wouldn’t want them running my enterprise operations.

That’s just it, they weren’t thinking!

Agreed! If they couldn’t handle the TouchPad rush, they just demonstrated their inability to handle real Enterprise demands, period..

The PC & the ‘mobile’ PC business have seen serious shifts in the way a OEM’s business model can work (Apple) in today’s current market. From components, to market-share, to profits, to design-quality, to carrier-deals, Apple has changed the mobile world’s business model & NO one seems to be able to adapt quick enough. Who would have thought that 1 product, 1 company, 1 category (iPad), could be SO disruptive to a companies bottom-line & their future prospects for sales, in such a short period of time?! HP was at the top, NO one will replace them because these events have exposed Windows for the garbage it is. There’s NO recovery. It’s all downhill from here on out! Thanks HP, nice job!! Now, it’s Google’s turn to do the same to non-iPad tablets. Won’t be long!

Windows being garbage? Lmao. Get ready to eat your words because it won’t be long.

How much of Windows market-share just got flushed down the drain since HP dumped them?? Maybe you weren’t paying attention, but HP said they’re out of the PC business (Windows business). They also said that would try to license WebOS, which means they’ll try to replace standard PC OS’s. Also, they’ll license to current OEM’s using Windows, if possible. Windows is around only because of legacy software, which mostly comes from the enterprise. IT departments take years to catch up to OS’s that are already outdated. A lot of hardware is also outdated, meaning many of them cannot upgrade to the new OS until they are modified. I’m not saying Apple will dominate the PC world, in fact, they’d be happy with just the mind-share. Microsoft/Windows has created a whirlwind that will only halt any forward movement in modern technology & society as a whole. They bring nothing to the table as far as products that are helpful. Their only intention is to lock you into a system where you’re at the mercy of OEM’s and advertisers, while you work with buggy, sub-standard equipment, that isn’t guaranteed to last very long! I could go on & on, all day! But I’m not saying anything you don’t know already. Be prepared for the SAD announcement that Windows 8 will be delayed again in some way, while Microsoft relies on their customers to just wait it out. Suckers!

Don’t make me laugh. I think you’re the only one here that’s not paying attention and is out of the loop.

You really think Windows market-share is going to go down because HP decided to sell off its PC unit? Take a look at what happened with IBM and its computer unit. They sold it to Lenovo and now its the top PC manufacture in China.

You act if HP just flushed its PC unit down the drain. It’s simply getting out of the game and selling it off.

You act like a kid who just broke up with their ex and now talking as much BS as he can about her/him. Calm down. But I will leave it as that, it’s no point in explaining to someone as ignorant and single minded as you. Like really, you’re pointing out the flaws for every manufacture, not just Windows.

Touchpads are great but they will never eliminate the market for laptops.  In fact, look for the thin laptop to be duel screened in the near future to provide the capabilities of both devices.
