Apple working on new streaming technology to take over living rooms

General

Amid the flurry of news reports about Steve Jobs’s departure as CEO of Apple was one hidden gem: Apple is reportedly working on a new way to deliver video content to televisions. The Wall Street Journal noted that Tim Cook, who has stepped up as the new CEO of Apple, will need to work on boosting Apple’s presence in the digital video market. “Apple is working on a new technology to deliver video to televisions, and has been discussing whether to launch a subscription TV service,”  the report said. It is still unclear what Apple’s new technology is, but in July we saw a unique patent for sharing media across iOS devices, which could very well be used with an Apple TV product. In addition, there have been rumors that Apple has considered purchasing the online streaming service Hulu, which could certainly help it kick-start a subscription TV platform.

You mean, I might actually use my ATV for more than Netflix and the occasional podcast?

That is all Apple TV does? Allows you to listen to music and use netflix?

iTunes video content and a couple other things too.. but really, it’s less powerful than say a roku player.

Pretty much and stream videos from computer to it and stream content from iOS devices. I would love to see an SDK for it but doubtful since they are into mirroring the stuff from iOS over to it.

Yeah, that’s all! Well, just that and buy/rent movies and TV shows from iTunes, watch major league baseball and NBA games, stream photos from your computer, Airplay from your iOS devices, watch YouTube, mirror your iPad screen, watch Vimeo videos, stream internet radio stations, and browse Flickr photos. But other than that it doesn’t do ANYTHING.

Mirroring iPad screen will be implemented in iOS 5. But yeah, the new Apple TV is awesome! I have both Roku and Apple TV, and prefer the Apple TV. One of the killer feature is imagine coming home from a family trip with bunch of photos and videos on your iPhone, simply connect your phone wirelessly via Apple TV (AirPlay) and your whole family can enjoy the photos/videos on your widescreen HDTV. Priceless.

jailbreak it and install xbmc.  best $99 ive spent for a great UI & powerful options.  i can care less about the 720p limitation, its for a bedroom tv, and it works great.  I have a dedicated htpc for 1080p in the living room

Apple overprices everything. Please stay out of home entertainment. I’m sticking with my Slingbox, GoogleTV Samsung TV and good sound.

So $100 is overpriced yet your Google TV, which doesn’t do anything, is a good buy? Okay.

      • Anonymous

Google says it is. So us gRobots (aka Goofans aka Apple Haters) will go to to our graves saying it is. Period!

Ya I agree with quietstorms. Google tv does the same thing as ATV and is $200 more. Slingbox on the other hand is awesome.

Actually I have both and right now the ATV is way better.   Of course that’s subject to change with a real app store…and with jailbreak the ATV does way more.

Wow, Apple’s working on something new. Who would have guessed?

    Next BGR headline:

“EXCLUSIVE BREAKING NEWS: Apple has thought about making a toaster.”

  • shankapotomus

i hope this is as awesome as apple tv

Hulu’s worthless outside of the U.S.! Where’s the value in buying them?

  • Anonymous

Did BGR have “breaking news” when google said they would have this type of thing (and more) at Google I/O ????

    • IPwn

      Actually, yes they did.

I’m fine with PS3 & Xbox 360. who needs anything Apple in the living room?

    • iBGR

Zachoff Epstein and the rest of iBGR. If it has an Apple logo on it they have to have it. If Jobs shits in a bag and they slap an Apple logo on it. They will stand in line for days just to get a wiff of his bunghole.

That’s what I’m saying. My PS3 does all the Apple TV crap. Oh, and it plays Blu-rays. Oh, and it plays DVDs. Oh, and it plays videogames.

  • Bob

    um use DLNA?

Holy crap, Apple in your living room, scary eh? I’d rather have an Ayrshire cow penned in my living room.

  • QNX Please

Sorry Apple, I refuse to rent a TV episode for $0.99. I’d consider buying one for $0.99 though. Until then, I will stream for free off the internet.

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me. I like what Apple is doing.

Apple should make a wireless headphone buds that stream music off customers icloud account. The cool part about it is the customer can be on the street listening to music. Apple will have to team up with some company so there is a constant internet access everywhere.
