Exclusive: Verizon passes on GALAXY S II, but 'similar' Samsung phone launching soon

Exclusive

Verizon Wireless is passing on the Galaxy S II smartphone according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday. BGR has confirmed with multiple trusted sources that this is accurate — Samsung will not unveil a Verizon-branded GALAXY S II smartphone next week at its New York City launch event on August 29th. Instead, Samsung will take the wraps off of GALAXY S II handsets that will soon launch on T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T. We’re told two of those carriers will maintain the “GALAXY S II” branding but one may offer a unique name for the handset. BGR has also confirmed, however, that Verizon Wireless will soon launch a Samsung device with very similar specifications — as in, nearly identical specifications — but it just won’t be a “GALAXY S II” phone. Perhaps it will be a new DROID device, a possible successor to the Samsung DROID Charge, or perhaps it will be something else entirely. In either case, Verizon Wireless subscribers certainly should not be worried when they don’t see an S II announced for the nation’s No. 1 carrier on Monday.

there ya go, that’s the proper attitude to have. we don’t need more silly verizon hate. fact is their 4G portfolio going into Q4 is going to be very good, so people need to calm down a bit. and yes, i think the ‘other’ samsung is the prime….

So we repeat the scenario where everyone else got the Nexus One, while we got the Incredible.  Now, the Incredible was a good phone, but it would be so nice to have one great Android model across every carrier.

I guess the iPhone will be first to do that next month.

There may be a good reason why Verizon passed on the Galaxy S II: the current design cannot accommodate LTE, which Verizon is rolling on on a huge scale.

Instead, Verizon will get a Samsung-built phone that functions like the Galaxy S II, but will look a little different because it specifically includes LTE support.

Yup. This is the hope. Backing myself from the proverbial ledge and waiting out an announcement on *that* phone.

Sammy will introduce an GS2 LTE  phone next week.  And it will be very thin (for an LTE phone).

The disappointing thing here to me (as a Verizon customer) is that IMO there really hasn’t been a phone released on Verizon since the original HTC Incredible (which is what I’m still currently running and love, especially with the latest Cyanogen) that has made me pull the trigger and switch (and believe me, I’m anxious to upgrade even though I really like the Incredible). The Thunderbolt is a big POS, The Droid Charge is just Eh at best and the Droid 2/3 are ok but nothing special. To me, Sprint and T-Mobile have been getting the best phones, Verizon needs to get in gear (not to mention nickel and diming their customers on pricing every chance they get). Even if/when the Prime comes along history shows it’s not likely to end up on Verizon but almost certainly will on T-Mobile and Sprint. Seriously considering a switch to T-Mobile even though their coverage is arguably not as good as Verizon in my area (Northern NJ).

Undfortunately there are too many who can’t wait any longer & Verizon will lose out!

Sooo, no SII added to it, would mean that the chances are really high of this being a “droid” phone or something without bing? right? Although, I don’t really know how i feel about the whole “similar specs = identical” thing. Kind of makes me think it’s not the nexus prime they’re referring to.

Could it be the Nexus Prime???

  • Philbert

Maybe it will be the “Droid Galaxy”

I was really hoping to upgrade my EVO 4G to a Nexus Prime on Sprint… But looks like I may have to wait even longer than I thought.  At least that give me time for my 2 year rebate to kick in.

a Droid?  does this mean ‘no Bing’?  I doubt it……sigh

  • Flyingrequin

it is the nexus prime – that’s why they don’t need the galaxy s II

I don’t think we will know much until the Bionic hype is over.  We probably will see an S2 variant before the Prime, which is still a ways off.

So does this mean Verizon will get the ‘Samsung Prime’ and ATT won’t?
