Samsung could be preparing to purchase HP's PC business

Computers

While Michael Dell laughs it up on Twitter, a new report suggests that Samsung could be preparing to purchase Hewlett-Packard’s PC business, which the company revealed it may soon spin off. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Samsung may be eyeing a purchase of HP’s PC division, which would catapult the South Korea-based electronics giant past Dell and into the No. 1 PC vendor spot globally. The report states that Samsung is currently meeting with various leading manufacturers including Quanta and Compal to investigate outsourcing the production of its own netbook computers. Samsung has held similar meetings in the past to no avail, but anonymous source tell DigiTimes that the company may be particularly motivated this time around as it negotiates a deal to take over HP’s PC business and free up space to build the machines in its own factories. HP announced last week that it may spin off its PC business, but a sale is also possible according to this new report, which suggests that HP’s announcement was “testing the market’s reaction” as the company weighs its options.

I have been saying Samsung all along. The CEO change was key, and the delay on the palm phones told anyone listening that something was coming. My friends who work for HP are trying to spin all this as positive but honestly, this will ultimately cut 1000s of American jobs. I believe Samsung will buy the biz, perhaps keep using either HP or Compaq name on low end and go after elite status with Samsung branded pcs. Ultimately it could be a great win for Samsung, but it will be a bust for the U.S.

Ok, I think Samsung could be successful with WebOS if HP decides to get rid of that as well.

I doubt HP is going to get rid of webOS.  This would definitely explain why they dumped the Touchpad and Pre line.  They did not want to be on seen as another Google after the Motorola deal.  I bet that Android hardware makers were more upset with Google than they let on.  Samsung probably wanted to license webOS but didn’t want to compete with HP on the hardware.  Getting rid of all of the hardware solves that problem.  No they can sell the PSG for a profit, then license webOS to Samsung.

Yeah I think so too.  WebOS is a good OS and Samsung has excellent hardware.

I don’t think Samsung will ever move to WebOS since they are already faring well with Android OS.  Going to WebOS avenue might be risky.  However, they can make few devices that runs in WebOS and test the market but I doubt that it will succeed.

      What?

Why do we want them gone? I disagree with the notion that they will be, but what spells doomsday here?

Hmmm…Samsung Envy. That might just work. Sammy already have something pretty slick along the lines of the 9series. Perhaps rebrand this to Envy range?
I hope they take Ari Jaaksi with him (though he is with webOS…perhaps Sammy should get this too). Ari will bring some of his ‘magic’ to the Bada platform. By magic, I mean ‘touch of death’. jk.

Will WebOS come with the PC business?  I’m liking WebOS on my $99 Touchpad.

Right there with you. Even if this puppy never gets a lick of support or updates, 99 is a steal.

If HP keeps WebOS in-house Samsung will want patent agreements in place. If not I am not sure this will happen.

Just what everyone needs, one less choice in the PC market…

Compal, Quanta, Asus, Flextronics – there’s 95% of your laptop market.  Oh, you mean brands and labels and not manufacturers?

@k4ever:disqus I haven’t thought of it like that.

    It certainly fits, interesting.

The first thing they should do is axe Compaq. Garbage machines = bad business.

    • Anonymous

      HP was just as bad.

  • Carlos

Go for it Sammy.  It would be a good move.

LOL, well Apple… looks like you are about to get it both ways…. meaning you can prepare to get boned in the rooter and the tooter. LOL

Google buying Motorola creates the opportunity to singlehandly develop a solid copetitor for your phone market. Should Samsung buy the HP PC company, then the iPad will see its heyday (we all know the Galaxy tablet having WebOS user interface using the Android platform will murder iPad). And lets not overlook the sleeping giant…. Microsoft will be reignited instantly when these sales go through because all other vendors will almost overnight decide to use the Win 8 platform for smartphones and tablets (in addition to PC’s).

Congrats Apple, all you had to do was be innovated… but instead your company got greedy from its niche products and now are about to repeat history….. all over again. See ya on the next innovation Apple.

Dell is best as “the little guy” and it’s a good kick in the pants for Michael to have this whole industry shake-up. If he plays it right, he could take a lot of HP’s business and really benefit from their mistakes.

  • Winski

NOTHING would be sweeter than to see Michael bitch-slapped back to his ranch in Montana…..

Yes, just like us Goofans (aka Apple Haters) like it!  One less American computer company.  Now, all we have to make sure is that Apple goes completely out of business and we will be happy!

i can see Samsung being sued after this for HP’s Envy line:
