RIP webOS: HP kills off its mobile operating system, considers PC spin-off and Autonomy buy

Breaking

Woh. HP on Thursday announced that it is putting an abrupt end to its efforts with webOS. The company says it will “discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.” The news comes just ahead of the company’s third-quarter earnings report. HP also confirmed that it may spin off its PC business and that it is currently in talks with Autonomy regarding “a possible business combination,” as was reported earlier on Thursday. HP acquired the webOS platform in 2010 as part of its $1.2 billion Palm buy. Since then, the company has launched a single tablet, the TouchPad, and two smartphones, the HP Pre2 and the HP Veer. The company’s full press release follows below.

I just paíd $22.85 for an íPad 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her her Canon EOS Rebel Camera that we got for $38.78 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $625 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentHûb.côm

I don’t get these companies inability to KISS….keep it simple…..
HP should have worked hard to develop ONE phone. Make it the very best possible phone you can. Give it a feature or two not yet seen in the rivals and price it so aggressively that people can’t help but take a hard look at it. Get people hooked on the experience of webOS and THEN worry about tablets, printers and spin-off phones, etc.  It’s such a copy cat industry but when you are 5th out of 5 you need to get on solid footing first.
Taking on the ipad right off the bat when they cant even compete with iphone was dumb. If people didn’t want webOS when the Pre was $29.99 why even dream they’d want a $500 tablet?

RIM, why couldn’t you have bought Palm instead of QNX? You would of acquired a better platform to transition BB OS 6, but now look at you…can’t make QNX a go at it. Pretty soon RIM, you are next just like Palm. RIP RIM.

The best mobile OS gone – really. Funny how people think all the rave of iOS5  – yet most of its features were already contained in webOS.
