DisplaySearch: Apple was world's top PC vendor in Q2, including iPads

Computers

Apple was the world’s top PC vendor last quarter, having shipped 13.6 million “personal computers” according to market research firm DisplaySearch. The firm includes both Mac computers and iPad tablets in its figures however, whereas most similar reports do not include tablet computers powered by mobile operating systems in the general PC category. Including the iPad, DisplaySearch says that Apple shipped nearly 4 million more PCs than second-ranked HP, which shipped 9.7 million computers in the second quarter. Dell found itself in the No. 3 spot with 7.5 million units shipped, Acer was No. 4 with 7 million units and Lenovo rounded out the top-5 with 4.8 million PCs shipped. Overall, the firm found that PC market growth continued to slow in the second quarter. “Preliminary results show a second consecutive quarter of Y/Y shipment growth rate decline,” said Richard Shim, Senior Analyst for DisplaySearch, in a statement. “While part of the Y/Y decline can be attributed to a strong first half of 2010, the rising tablet PC shipment growth rate begins to point to notebook PC shipment cannibalization.” DisplaySearch’s full press release follows below.

Apple Retakes Top Mobile PC Market Share Position from HP in Q2’11

Tablet PC Shipments Fuel Apple’s 136% Y/Y Mobile PC Growth; Lead on HP Nearly 4 Million Units

SANTA CLARA, CALIF., August 18, 2011—Apple shipped over 13.5 million mobile PCs in Q2’11 for 136% Y/Y shipment growth, overtaking HP for the top spot, according to preliminary results from the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report. Nearly 80% of Apple’s mobile PC shipments were iPads, which reached over 10.7 million units, for 107% Y/Y growth. Apple’s total mobile PC shipments (notebook and tablet PCs) were 3.9 million units more than HP’s nearly 9.7 million units for the quarter.

From a category perspective, tablet PCs continue to be the engine of growth for the mobile PC industry. Tablet PC shipments were up nearly 70% Q/Q and over 400% Y/Y with nearly 16.4 million units shipped in Q2’11. Notebook PC shipments were down 2% Q/Q but up 2% Y/Y with nearly 48 million units shipped in Q2’11. A consumer notebook PC adoption slowdown continues to hold back the industry following a 2% Y/Y drop in shipments in Q1’11. Worldwide mobile PC shipments (including notebook and tablet PCs) reached 64.4 million in Q2’11, up 10% Q/Q and 28% Y/Y. Among the top five players, Acer experienced the largest decline in shipment growth. Acer’s shipment growth declined in Q2’11, falling 4% Q/Q and 12% Y/Y.

In the notebook PC category, Samsung and Dell had the fastest shipment growth, up 44% and 33% Y/Y, respectively. Dell was also up Q/Q with 27% shipment growth, as it continues to take advantage of a rebound in commercial market PC shipments. Samsung’s shipments fell 16% Q/Q as it was unable to build off of strong shipment results in EMEA and China. Still Samsung was able to top Q1’11 shipment levels in North America and Asia Pacific.

“Preliminary results show a second consecutive quarter of Y/Y shipment growth rate decline,” saidRichard Shim, Senior Analyst for DisplaySearch. “While part of the Y/Y decline can be attributed to a strong first half of 2010, the rising tablet PC shipment growth rate begins to point to notebook PC shipment cannibalization.”

Tablet PC shipment results show that even after removing Apple from growth rate calculations, worldwide Y/Y tablet PC shipment growth reached 25%, and shipments of non-Apple tablets reached over 5.6 million units for the quarter.

Nice to read and all (especially as an AAPL stock holder), but…

Until iOS 5 drops and the iPad can fully-function as an autonomous computing device (sans the need for any other computer to register, update, backup etc.) then it simply shouldn’t be considered in the same category as netbook, laptop, or desktop computers.

    • Bob Dylan

Regardless, it is a mobile PC.

      • DaHarder

An expected response from a rabid fanatic forever trapped in Apple’s RDF such as yourself, but for the more rational/objective of us, it’s not really fair.

“The firm includes both Mac computers and iPad tablets in its figures however, whereas most similar reports do not include tablet computers powered by mobile operating systems in the general PC category.”

      • Bob Dylan

If I’m stuck in Apple’s RDF, can you explain why I have two HP workstations running Windows 7? How about the fact that I actually bought a Windows Phone 7 phone (Samsung Focus) and an Android tablet (Toshiba Thrive) for friends and family?

Just because someone disagrees with you does not mean they’re a rabid fanatic.

Now how about the above statistics?

      • Anonymous

Why? Most similar reports may just be wrong.

      • Anonymous

@bob_dylan:disqus So you’re trying to state some sort of “I use other stuff” validation by stating you use HP Workstations (did you voluntarily purchase them for your own personal use? Probably more likely you WORK on them since no one buys an HP workstation for home), and that you bought an Android tablet and Windows phone for friends and family? So wait, you’re POV is unbiased because you unloaded what you perceive as lesser devices to OTHER people? Please tell me you’re not a lawyer, you’re argumentative reasoning is on par with the period at the end of this sentence.

Unrelated, but anyone else find it freaking annoying that Disqus only allows 2 levels of threaded replies?

      • Fat Mams

No its not. An iPad does not have 1/4 of the capabilities of what classifies a ‘mobile PC’.

My Android phone has the exact same capabilities as an iPad. Is that a ‘mobile PC’.

      • http://twitter.com/judsontwit Judson

Why yes, yes it is a mobile PC. In every important sense of the word.

(Is it used for the same tasks? Nah. But is it still a mobile computer? Definitely.)These artificial market distinctions are showing cracks.

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6HpRLyzMY Walter Sobchak

Your android phone doesn’t have the exact same capabilities, it actually has access to the file system, which technically makes it more of a PC.

        The iPad.. a mobile PC???

        Yeah, sure..
Try to develop an iOS application just using an iPad

      • Anonymous

Then windows computers are not pcs either.

    • Anonymous

Except for the fact that the CEO of the worlds largest pc maker if you don’t include tablets claim it is devastating the pc market.

It is replacing pc purchases, even without those features.

    • Anonymous

I believe that you can register and even update your iPad at Apple stores. Still backing up and updating are not requirements for a iPad to function. No more anyway than updating a Windows pc from XP service pack 1 to SP 2.

    • Anonymous

You mean like Android phones?  Are those PCs just because they need never be connected to a PC?

We already have names for smartphones, tablets, notebooks and desktops–it is based on the form-factor of the device, not whether or not they need to be connected to something else.

  • Anonymous

Since iPads are NOT PCs, this whole article is pointless and stupid. You can do a little bit of your PC work on an iPad, but not much. This is some person’s slant on the world which doesn’t have any meaning in reality.

    • Anonymous

Indeed. There is general agreement that “PC” refers to a desktop or laptop and, more specifically, to a computer that runs Windows (witness the “Mac vs. PC commercials.”)

If iPads are PCs, then so are smartphones as they differ only in the screen size.

I got an iPad 2 32-GB for $21.68 and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $ 38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $ 657 which only cost me $ 62.81 . Here is the site we use to get it al from, http://to.ly/aXGE

      That’s Nice…

(now away with the spamming please)

    • Anonymous

      Fuck off and die… now!

    • Smart Guest

She loves it but it arrives tomorrow? I call you a liar!!

  • Tom

And LG is #1 smartphone vendor, including microwaves.
    WTF?

    • Anonymous

The sale of microwaves has no impact on the smartphone market. I am not aware of any overlap in intended functionality.

      They may both cause cancer.

    • Anonymous

I love my LG microwave. Their appliance are very good. Their phones, however, seem to be pretty lacking, at least here in the States.

Back to the point, though. Phones, tablets, laptops, desktops… all of these things can be considered a PC, by the definition of the term. So could a microwave, I guess, but then we just start to nitpick.

  • Taco50

I expect a lot of hater comments, but Apple marches on.

Give us some time.. we’re still moaning WebOS

      • DaHarder

        mourning too…

      • Anonymous

He said moaning, lol that’s funny. I see why he said that, unlike the iPad, the TouchPad is porn friendly. lol, it makes sense why “Touch” is part of the name.

  • http://profiles.google.com/kchristainsen Kenny Christainsen

So BGR why did you post this? Majority would agree ipad is no a pc

    • DaHarder

      Mo Hits…Mo Money!

  • Taylor Davis

So…….they were fifth maybe even sixth then? You need to stop reporting these stats that are only generated to give to apple shareholders.  Its not news and it makes you look desperate.

Title should read BGR three biggest letters that wish they were somehow APLE

Thanks for the brand new spam, at least your message is more exciting than the guy that talks about him and his girlfriend buying the iPad cheap.

  • Thrillingbroom

How can you include it in PC sales when its a “Post-PC” device?

  • Anonymous

How much did Apple pay for that stupid “research”?

  • Sean Humphrey

Ok sooo… an iPad is not a considered a full-on PC except when it’s convenient for Apple shareholders and enthusiasts? Then it counts? Ohhh! I get it now.

    Dumb.

  • Philbert

So iPads count both in “iOS product activations” and “personal computers.” Kind of curious…

  • Anonymous

PC makers consider iPad competition. I guess BGR commenters know something they do. It is amazing how impossible it is for so many to consider anything outside their narrow view.

HP is looking to exit the PC business specifically because of the impact of tablets. (As of today, there is still only one of consequence).

Chairman of Acer acknowledges the impact, just thinks they are a fad.

Sorry people but the iPad is not a PC. It just isn’t. My MacBook Pro is. My Xoom is more like a PC compared to the iPad. The iPad is a big App Launcher. It’s nice but until it is a stand alone device that doesn’t require to hook up with a PC to perform backups, it’s just a nice bit of gadgetry.

    ipad,not a pc

  • Drybones5

AN iPAD IS NOT A PC.

It functions the same as an iPhone or iPod Touch BUT WITH A LARGER SCREEN.  Literally the same OS, same design LAYOUT.  It’s not a PC, it’s a mobile device like MP3 players, phones, and GPS devices.

If you’re considering mobile devices as PC’s sold the, Nokia sold the most PCs in the world last quarter.

  • Anonymous

How can a “post pc” device be a pc?

  • Anonymous

The only thing APPLE is on top is the tablet market NOT PC. I don’t see anything that APPLE being the top PC maker it’s only their mobile device.

  • Victor Oliveira

Wow amazing why not add Iphones too? They do the same as Ipad or more!!
