Nokia CEO wary of Motorola/Google deal, warns Google's Android partners

mobile

Speaking during a seminar in Helsinki, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop gave a gloomy response to Google’s planned $12.5 billion takeover of Motorola Mobility. “If I happened to be someone who was an Android manufacturer or an operator, or anyone with a stake in that environment, I would be picking up my phone and calling certain executives at Google and say ‘I see signs of danger ahead,’” Elop said. “The very first reaction I had was very clearly the importance of the third ecosystem and the importance of the partnership that we announced on February 11, it is more clear than ever,” Elop added, noting Nokia’s recent agreement to launch smartphones running Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system. HTC, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson all voiced support for the merger, which Google’s CEO Larry Page said will help it in its patent battles against Microsoft and Apple.

Perhaps he should take his own advice and hedge his bet by building devices for another ecosystem besides WP7. Android would be a good bet.

Because taking advice from a failing organization and a buffoon CEO as opposed to some of the top handset manufacturers in the world is a smart decision.  Worry about your own backyard Elop and work on trying to make Nokia relevant again.

this guy is such an @$$HAT!!! He’s such an M$ Puppet…!?!?!
it’s like.. “are you talking….?!?   causing all i hear is “wah-wah-wah..”

He is just pissed because they were all sleeping when android walked in…. they supported symbian. Now they are moving to windows which will again bring them down. If you can’t beat them join them.

So… the hardware company owned by the company making their operating system is predicting gloom now that a company making hardware has been purchased by the company making the operating system.

Is this… could this be… ironic? And not internet ironic, or Alanis Morisette ironic, but the real thing?

The only way this could be bad for partners is if Google starts putting out vanilla Android that people can finally get updates for. So yea, if that is bad for them to bad. Its good for us consumers who don’t want to buy a new phone just to get an update. The only problem I see is Google might run into carrier issues, them demanding their bloatware on the phone etc..

Hopefully Google will follow Apple who knows we don’t want carrier crap on our phones.

This is a CEO whining because he got in bed with MS?  You should be fired for making such a bad decision.  No one wants MS.  We have been force fed this in the PC market for decades.  Now that there are better options the public is making their own decisions.  Apple = Android = WIn; MS = Fail.  When there are 3 choices out there and you knowingly made the wrong one, its your own damn fault.

If I were leading shareholders, I would be questioning the direction of the Execs and what type of golden parachutes they have from the MS deal.

Stephen Elop looks a lot like Lewis Black.

The primary reason for the purchase is PATENTS. The protection of Android by those patents equals protection  to all the android OEMs. Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG etc there’s no need to fret…this is to ensure the sustenance of Android..ur cash cow

This is the face of the captain who sank the Titanic.

Before this MS Trojan Horse infiltrated in Nokia, nobody thought anybody could steal Nokia’s No. 1 position.

Foolishness… you mean when Apple dropped the iPhone and the entire planet went damn near batshit crazy over it (whether that batshit crazy was negative or positive), you didn’t see the writing clearly on the wall to all other mobile phone manufacturers and mobile OS developers?

Then Nokia decided they don’t want to partner up w/ US carriers to subsidize phones and lost a HUGE market as a result… then both iOS and Android surpass Symbian thanks to App Markets… RIM losing ground in the meantime… Meego not anywhere to be found… but no, its Stephen Elop and MS’ fault taht Nokia fell from #1 worldwide.

There’s something long and prickly up your butt and has the word ‘FANBOY’ written on it.

      • Chut Pata

Spoke like a true fanboy of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

That long and prickly thing up your butt is the dick of Balmer.

The Big Question is would they have rather seen Microsoft buy Motorola mobility and use those patents to shake down Andriod OEMs for more cash or Google for their protection???. Besides Google has said Motorola will be run separately and does not automatically get first dibs to making future Nexus phones. Besides the Motorola design team need to be seriously revamped…the phone designs aren’t the best.

Partners will need to take this guy’s advice seriously, he has proved that he has a clear mind for the business, he runs Nokia you know?… oh wait.

  • Ulysses Grant

If Elop is wary, that means he is not confident that new Nokia mobile with WinMo 7 will take off.

Thats an interesting comment considering his company was basically bought by Microsoft earlier this year. Would he have been seeing “signs of danger ahead” if he was CEO of a different WP7 manufacturer when the Microsoft/Nokia deal happened?

  • Chut Pata

    Posts removed.  Trying again.

This is the face of the captain that sank Titanic.  Nobody thought anyone can take away the No. 1 spot from Nokia but this Trojan Horse from Microsoft did it.

Coming from the guy who ran his company off a cliff!

  • Bbghy

Nokia still has no clue how the market is shifting. That’s like standard and poors downgrading the us. They fail by giving toxic shares an AAA rating then bust. Nokia makes great hardware but elop is the captain of a sinking ship and now has great advice ?

  • Anonymous

How can Nokia warns Google partners? when they haven’t even release any new hardware lately except their N8. Plus they haven’t even release their Windows 7. I still prefer if Nokia have Android OS on their phones.

Wp7 is the biggest flop with Elop

  • http://twitter.com/rdg666 Renee Gerber

Why would Elop care about what goes on in Android Land when Nokia has never used that platform and probably never will??

  • http://twitter.com/mimrixmike Mike

Cause he is the guy to listen to…. Seriously, Nokia is going downhill and FAST.
