Mac sales slump a 'significant' 40%, analyst suggests

Computers

Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry sent an investor note out on Wednesday warning that a weak back-to-school season caused last weekend’s Mac sales to slump between 35% and 40% from the weekend of July 23rd. It was “probably one of the slowest weekends for Mac sales,” Chowdhry said, suggesting that higher gas prices could be responsible for the decline. Chowdhry surveyed four different university book stores for his data, which doesn’t sound like a large enough sample pool to us, and employees in the stores said slower sales were likely due to summer break. Chowdhry thinks Apple could attract more customers by offering $100 refunds in the form of cash instead of in App Store gift cards. Not all analysts agree, of course: according to CultofMac, UBS analyst Maynard Um recently reported that the Mac “continues to be the most popular among consumers and students heading back to school.”

I just paíd $22.85 for an íPad 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her her Canon EOS Rebel Camera that we got for $38.78 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $625 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentHúb.çom

Let’s check on the sales of Starbucks Coffee near University campus (or on) while semester break … LOL… that’s hilarious :)

Trip is also the guy who wrongly called Xoom sales to be 25000 units when the actual sales number was 250,000 units.

“Chowdhry surveyed four different university book stores for his data, which doesn’t sound like a large enough sample pool to us,”

Isn’t it the job of a journalist to parse this information in determining what’s newsworthy and of the public interest and what’s not? Shouldn’t you mention Maynard Um’s study Chowdhry directly contradicted with his four university bookstores? I understand the need to drive site traffic on a slow morning, and that you’re merely picking up a story other venues have run (also with no other mentions, and without much vetting), but sometimes it’s a little transparent.

GAS PRICES? really. “Gee, let’s not go buy that mac, we can’t afford the 10 cent increase in gas this weekend.”

Todd, I know you’ll never see this, but do you even realize that your CultOfMac analyst didn’t necessarily disagree with what your first analyst said? The first analyst said sales are down. That doesn’t mean that Macs are any less popular. It could — and probably does — mean that less computers were being bought in general.

Two aspects come to mind, one the economy and the other the computer industry as a whole. The economy blows well beyond that which I have experienced in my 45 years on this earth. Secondly, the entire industry is down. Perhaps not 40%, but I would be that this is not restricted to Apple. Tangentially, I would say that we are experiencing the consumerization of computing, where PCs represent a set of capabilities that most people don’t need.

I would suggest that Apple returning to a solid 3 by 3 grid for the Mac would be appropriate. My Air suffices for everything I do, and I am a designer of mobile apps.

If you are trading Apple stock of this clown’s analysis—I’ve got some other well researched advice I can dole out as well. I have some beachfront property in Arizona that is going up in value to. I surveyed 2 squirrels, an eagle and a snake. They all said that there are more and more people clomping around the area.

While the sample size of this article is pretty ridiculous, it wouldn’t surprise me if longer term the iPad sales were cutting into Mac sales overall.  Many average people don’t use their computers for much more than web surfing and a few other basics that can be done with a tablet.  Time will tell how it all plays out.

This douchebag samples 4 college bookstores and then extrapolates an overall tread?  Whatever happened to real journalism? Maybe the author should write for the New York Times. They could give him Jayson Blair’s old desk.

Has anybody thought of Lion as the reason that people are either shying away or waiting for updates? Cause frankly though Lion has provided a lot of new “features” it curtails major computer usage/purpose – which is to run software that you and I use.

I have a meagre iMac running Snow Leopard, took an early plunge deep into OSX Lion, Guess what? My computer’s functionality has degraded, can’t run this, can’t run that or does not support this and that. So I am back to good old reliable Snow Leopard with Lion in a nearly forgotten Partition.

I’m not sure, but if I were in the market for a new apple computer and what’s on the stores are preinstalled with OSX LIon. I’d be looking for a Snow Leopard installer first if I don’t have one before buying or replace the OS with Snow Leopard if I already have one. Or lastly wait it out until all this bugs, compatibility issues and third party software I use will join the OSX Lion band wagon.

Maybe they should have stuck with giving away ipod touches with the back to school sale

Annoying!!! Cant call you fanboys, more like Apple Posers. Get off your high horses. 9.8 out of 10 of you Apple Posers, were PC owners and lovers, acting like Apple is the only product you ever used or loved in your life. Y’all know you loved your microsoft PC’s, why the all the hate for your former lover? You are trendy, you are sheep, its not your fault, i forgive you. Apple has been around for 30+ years and yall are just now jumping on the Apple bandwagon? You only cheer for the home team when they are winning and will be the first ones to turn your back.
I can’t believe I am even annoyed by Apple retards, so much that I’m responding in a post surrounded by you losers. Actually its probably the retarded shit and weak ass rhetoric that comes out your mouths. I’m sorry if it feels like I’m picking on you Apple retards but you are definitely the most annoying of all the other retards on the tech sites. I love eating apples and using Apple products and all other non Apple products. Instead of being douche bags, we should be nice to eqch other and we should cheer on all tech to push the boundaries to give us awesome shit.

Um… July 20th was the release of the new MacBook Airs & Lion.   Of course the weekend of July 23rd had sales through the roof, satisfying the pent up demand of buyers who waited for those products.

The fact the an August weekend is 35% less than a new release weekend means nothing.
