HP TouchPad a dud at Best Buy, sell-through rate falls below 10%

While the timing is curious to say the least, AllThingsD on Tuesday evening issued a report claiming to reveal terrible, terrible sales of HP’s virgin webOS tablet at nationwide retail giant Best Buy. According to the blog, Best Buy took delivery of 270,000 TouchPads following the slate’s release last month. Since then, the retailer has managed to sell just 25,000 units to end users despite HP’s huge celebrity-laden advertising campaign. That’s a sell-through rate of less than 9.3%. To make matters even worse, these figures come after HP has lowered the price of the tablet to just $399.99 for the 16GB version. Best Buy is so unhappy, the report says, that it refuses to pay for the tablets and instead wants HP to take them back. An HP executive is scheduled to visit Best Buy’s headquarters in the near future to discuss the matter, the report says. AllThingsD’s claims came just two days ahead of HP’s quarterly earnings report, which is scheduled to be issued today after market close.

      This is what happens when people don’t actually test out the devices and just want to be fanboys.

      Actually compared the HP to some other Android tablets and was fairly impressed.  Its fast and easy to use.

      Still wouldn’t buy it due to lack of apps.

      And for the record, I have nothing against Apple or iPad except for being chained to goat-blowing iTunes.

    Call this part of the Carly Fiorina legacy.  When she took over HP, she cut engineering budgets, because as a saleswoman, she knew the HP brand and channel were the company’s real strengths, and all they needed were some celebrities to help market the product.  So for many years, HP has relied on inept competition and inertia (i.e, their brand name and channel) to sell the same exact stuff as everybody else.  

    Cut to 2010, and along comes a new product category (thanks to Apple), and HP, a year and a half after the new product is introduced, finally and actually has a pretty good product, one that could stand on its merits.  But everybody has been conditioned to believe that HP just sells the same undifferentiated stuff as the rest of the non-Apple bunch, so the reaction to HP’s lame marketing campaign is “so what?”.  Who is going to waste time and risk money finding out if the TouchPd is any good?

    Obviously, not that many. Thank you Carly, for turning one of the great engineering stories of the 20th century into just another bunch of suits.  

    p.s.  BestBuy, stop whining.  Don’t blame it all on HP and demand a refund.  You’re supposed to be the electronics retailing geniuses.  There has to be more to selling the latest technology than running ads and spamming social networks.

    I blame HP’s marketing campaign and weak apps.  However, Best Buy sales team always push the iPad.

    Just got back from Costco – they had a whole pallet full of these guys (empty boxes) for sale for something like $449 each. Did they just forget to update the display or is that their real price?

    No apps….good tablet but no market,  Web OS is a dying beast.

      this is the real reason.  if you’re not going to have a robust app market, then there’s no reason to have a $500+ device. it just ends up being an internet appliance.

      So Average Joe already decided they don’t want an ipad for whatever reason… now you’re showing them $300 – $400 Android tabs w/ marketplace vs HP which is nice but more expensive and lacks apps… why spend the extra for the HP?

    So disapointing!  HP has a great OS on their hands and the ability to produce some great products. Yet they come up with the wanna be ipad with a  crappy ipad like low resolution screen, and cheap plastic case.  They really screwed up.  No tablet, not even the ipad is good enough yet.  They are useless.

    I just paíd $22.85 for an íPad 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her her Canon EOS Rebel Camera that we got for $38.78 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $625 which only cost me $62.81 to buy.     I feel sorry for HP. I thought the touchpad is a really nice tablet. They should’ve hired developers to develop good to high quality apps for the touchpad before launching it, that way it would already have apps on its app store for their new users. They should’ve known how important apps are to users. I guess that’s why the consumers get wary of buying tablets other than the ipad, due to lack of apps.

    Best Buy was very foolish to have bought so many TouchPad’s…the market is over-saturated with tablets. Andriod and Apple tablets have Huge appstores on top of great specs…the writing was on the wall so shame on Best Buy for making a commitment then not wanting to pay for it.
