Apple may invest $1 billion in Sharp LCD factory for iPhone, iPad displays

Apple may invest $1 billion in a Sharp LCD factory to ensure adequate production of screens for its iPhone and iPad, according to MF Global FXA Securities analyst David Rubenstein. Apple typically buys its LCD displays from Samsung, LG and Chimei Innolux, although recent reports have suggested the iPhone maker has boosted its orders with Samsung after LG failed to meet iPad 2 display requirements. However, Apple’s recent legal battles with Samsung in the United States, the European Union and Australia could be why the company is looking to invest in other manufacturers. “If the situation escalates into a state of war, this could mean a huge shift in orders,” a source told Reuters, suggesting that Apple could give larger orders to Elpida Memory and Toshiba. Sharp is expected to provide the LCD displays for Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone, which is expected to launch next year.

    Sharp and Toshiba = fail

And this the reason why Google will have a tough time dealing with hardware side of the Motorola acquisition. Running a vertically integrated business is very different than licensing an OS.

While Google is primarily a search/advertising company… Google now has thousands Motorola employees too.

Sharp? Really??? Good luck with that o_O

I feel like eventually all their manufacturing will be in house

    • Anonymous

Only if they move their ‘house’ to China/Taiwan.

What exactly do you mean? As far as I understand, Apple actually got rid of all manufacturing all together. The only thing that they are still manufacturing “in house” is PR (and BS).

Have you read the news (yesterday) about Apple abandoning plans for releasing iPad 3 with “retina” display this year due to yield issues with high resolution LCD panels?  Who is laughing now? I guess Samsung will be laughing when they will be the first company to release a tablet with retina screen.

      • Anonymous

LMAO! wow. You’re dumb. You don’t see the big picture do you? You understand what yield issues means right? Lemme explain this to you. Apple needs a minimum of 30 million iPad screens just to cover 6 months. If apple is going to release a new iPad they would have needed guarantees that the parts would be there. Obviously LG, Samsung, Chimei innolux combined could not produce enough of the “retina” screens. That’s your “yield issue” So if Samsung is going to be the first with a retina screen tablet then good for them. Too bad they will sell maybe 500,000 tops. See the big picture now? SMH Another fucken muppet.  true story™©®

I still think this is just a(n asinine) game of brinksmanship. Apple can certainly get displays from other companies, but Samsung is making the best stuff in town right now. And with the Super AMOLED Plus HD screens floating around now… yeah, I wouldn’t want to miss out on that.

And Samsung would obviously prefer Apple’s money in its coffers. I mean… they’ve got to come to their senses eventually, don’t they?

Samsung doesnt need apple as they make virtually every electronic component you can think of while apple is only buying a small portion of their business. Apple will just end up with a Sharp iphone and ipad, part of reason why apple suceeded is samsung way to go shoot ur partners, good bye apple.

Excellent jobs/investment to the japanese rather than an american company like corning in NY. Apple you’re success came from the U.S consumer. We can take you down just as quick as we built you up. I love apple products but i’m tired of american corporations treating americans like dogs/idiots.

Since when does Corning build displays? They don’t build displays, they make glass. I don’t think any Americans are complaining, people vote with their wallets not nationalist sentimentalities. Take your xenophobia and shove it.

I just paíd $22.85 for an íPad 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her her Canon EOS Rebel Camera that we got for $38.78 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $625 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, Centb.çom
