NPD: Gaming sales down 26% in July, Xbox 360 top U.S. console for seventh straight month

U.S. video game industry sales were down 26% in July compared to the same period last year according to new data published by The NPD Group. Hardware sales were down 29% year-over-year to $223 million, video game software sales dipped 17% to $336.2 million and sales of video game accessories were down 8% to $127.8 million. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was the best-selling console in the U.S. for the seventh consecutive month with unit sales of 277,000, though July marked the first time the Xbox saw a year-on-year decline since December 2009. ”There is no getting around the fact that video game sales in the new physical retail channel suffered its lowest month since October 2006,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement. “Despite the very rough month, new physical retail sales are down just 4% year-to-date and based on seasonality trends observed over the last 10 years, which have been remarkably stable year-in, year-out, industry sales in this particular channel are poised to land in the flat to -2% range once the total year is completed.” NPD’s top-10 list of video game software title sales in the month of July follows below.

Could be cause most people already have the console(s) they want?  The 360, PS3 and the Wii are all older than 3 or 4 years now.

Time for new hardware.  Bad economy or not.

Looks like Fallout: New Vegas benefited from being on sale at Best Buy for $10 for a week quite nicely.  That’s when I bought it.

Could be because people like me will not pay $500+ for a PS3/Xbox set up (read: you need more than JUST the game console thats in the box. a.k.a attachments) and then want to turn around and spend $60+ on a single game that you will be bored with in a months time.
My wii has more dust on it than your grannies cooter…. games are too expensive.

Doubt it’s the price of games.

They’ve always been priced $49 or higher.  In fact, during the NES, Genesis and SNES days, when counting inflation, they cost more than they do now (relatively speaking).

New consoles used to come out every 4 years.  I think the 360 is 5 years old with hardly any mention of its successor.

Were any games worth a damn released in July? Pretty sure not, so this is hardly news.

    This one is too easy.

    Market saturation.

We’re talking about consoles that have been out since 2006 (360). Yes, re-designs were performed and both the 360 & ps3, and the wii has literally seen its price chopped in half it seems….but after awhile, you start running out of consumers who haven’t already bought the item. *And in the case of re-designs, there are still consumers who have the older models that aren’t ready to buy the new model*

Of course game sales will pick up in the fall, like they always do. Just like music sales and TV ratings….

By the way, I just paîd $21.87 for an îPad 2-64GB and my boyfriend loves his Panasonîc Lumîx GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS.I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $657 which only cost me $62.81 to buy.

It was a slow month. Not too many new games is out. It will pick up again when MADDEN 12′ comes out NBA 12′, Gears of War, Uncharted 3 Resistance 3 and Call of Duty comes out then the sales will be back on track
