Apple may unveil iPhone 5 on September 7th

mobile

Apple plans to hold this year’s “iPod media event” on September 7th, Japanese-language news site Kodawarisan reported on Friday. The company’s September event has historically been dedicated to the iPod line, with Apple having unveiled its latest iPod touch, iPod shuffle and iPod nano models at last year’s event. With a new iPhone model due to be released in September or October, however, it seems very likely that Apple will use its annual September media event to unveil the iPhone 5 rather than just refreshed iPods. The spotlight has moved off of Apple’s iPod lineup over the past few years — Apple even removed its “iPod” branding from the Music app in iOS 5 — so it seems highly unlikely that the company’s line of media players will continue to warrant a dedicated event. Apple is also expected to launch the new iPad 3 in the near future, though a recent round of rumors suggest that might not happen until late November or even early 2012.

If it has the same thinness as the rumored pics, how could apple possibly compete with all of the other 4g devices? No way can something as thin as those pics house a 4G LTE hardware.

will apple be left in the dust for another year?

If by “left in the dust for another year” you mean “make money hand over fist” the answer is yes.

Don’t forget. There are also many more non 4G markets than 3G currently. So I don’t necessarily think it should be a huge deciding factor.

4G is a buzz word for most people right now. It’s loosely defined by moron marketing types and is unstable in various forms due to it being in it’s infancy (vzw LTE and wimax). Apple typically doesn’t jump on bandwagons for the sake of it. They will make 4G devices when they are practical for the majority of their target audience.

    • Anonymous

Ok. Everyone knows I’m a huge douchebag fandroid. I love anything google and hate apple with a passion but stupid morons like you make the rest of us look bad. You’re just another ignorant self centered American. 4G is still in it’s infancy around the world and one could argue in the U.S. too. Apple makes it’s one phone per year. Would it make sense to put a 4G radio in a phone that 90% of the people buying would not be in a quality 4G Area? Use some common sense dumbass. You have been suckered buddy. Get your head out of your ass. I will say that android has higher market share and more activations per day than apple so that makes android better!

4G is spreading extremely fast in the US with dozens of cities lighting up with LTE per month (check the VZW website).  My city/town is getting it this month and it is far from a metropolis.  A top of the line device without the top of the line hardware isn’t top-of-the-line, is it? Why would apple go thinner when thinner makes the thing more difficult to hold?  I’ll tell you why – its because morons go for the pretty oooh-ahhhh neato factor.

        get a clue.

      • Anonymous

SMH. Like I said. You’re a self centered ignorant American. Big world outside the USA dummy. The majority of the “4G” isn’t even true “4G” maybe you should get a clue. enjoy the hspa+.

        Pap,

you don’t even know me.  Instead you spew hate and ignorance. I find it ironic that the one calling others ignorant is actually the one who is self centered and ignorant.  lol!

I live in a city with decent “4G” from all the big 4 carriers. I personally have no use for it and everyone I know with a “4G” phone, doesn’t have it turned on because of battery life and just lack of need. 4G is the future, but currently doesn’t have a lot of use for “most” people. The average person just wants to update their FB or send email or play games. Downloading/uploading files is not a top priority. Netflix and music streaming services work fine with 3g. With how data plans and pricing are going, 4G is going to be even less attractive to the majority of users, people downloading 5GB+ a month are not the majority. So while I’m sure one day we will all have 4G devices (and then 5G!!!!) right now it is not going to make or break a device or company.

As it appears you do not even have a 4G device yet, what do you plan to do with all that speed?

      • Tchfunkta

Two words: Battery life. Apple is *huge* on battery life. Why was the first iPhone 2G? Because 3G phones sucked batteries dead vs. 2G phones at the time. What was one of the biggest knocks on the first 3G iPhone? Crappy battery life. What did Apple do with the iPhone 4, among other enhancements? Significantly increase the size of the battery. What has Apple done over the last couple of Macbook revisions, among other things? Move away from user replaceable batteries, to increase the size of the battery.

What are 4G networks known for? Sucking battery like crazy. Apple won’t add 4G to the iPhone anytime soon for precisely that reason, aside from the fact that most people (i.e. average users, the kind who don’t visit tech blogs) don’t even know what 4G is or why they would want it.

What good is having ferrari data speeds if your phone is dead by lunchtime?

    • Anonymous

Apple can be slow to adopt new technology (blu-ray). I doubt they would make an LTE phone anytime soon especially considering AT&T doesn’t even have their network ready yet (let alone their 3G network, but that’s a whole other conversation).

4G LTE with Data Caps useless

    • Anonymous

It’s not going to be 4G

      1) Verizon and AT&T have different networks so if they made LTE for verizon and HSPA+ for AT&T people would be jealous
      2) If they wanted to go LTE AT&T still doesn’t have their network up
      3) Apple said they are waiting for it to become power efficient on the phone

    • Anonymous

Who cares about 4G when everybody has capped dataplans?  You just burn through your cap quicker.   Stupid carriers.

    • Anonymous

God I hope so. 4g exists nowhere as of now. Verizon has it in 100 markets right now and AT&T has just started rolling it out in 10 one of them being where I live. 3G is just about everywhere. Also 4g is a data sucker you’ll use your data plan in 30 minutes. If it does come with it which it will not mine will be turned off permanently.

More crappy devices from a crappy company. Only Google and it’s partners make good and sexy products.

    • Tuscano77

It would seem that the majority (not all but a seeminly large #) of Android users have some suppressed frustration. Why is that? Bad user experience perhaps? Young, broke and unable to afford better choices, cause your carrier trapped you in a 2 year contract with a free phone? So then you hit to the posts to let it all out with ignorant comments?

I’m all for a friendly debate and mature commentary, but you simply can’t reason with crazy and ignorance. You listening PAPINYC? Or are you just going to tell me to “shut up” since you have nothing intelligent to interject and contribute to these posts?

      • neeky

you know that all of these people are trolls posing as android fans right?  its pretty obvious if you pay attention

STFU!!!! android has higher market share!!! Fact!!! Android has higher daily activations!!! Fact!!!! So that makes android better than apple!!! Fact!!! Jerk! You got me so mad now! I’m gonna be AFK for an hour or so to cool off. My mom is gonna make me a pizza pop and chocolate milk. Dont piss me off again.

        Uhhhhhhh Mr 77:
That was Scroat aka Mobile aka PAPINYC iMpersonator posing as me; expand his Disqus profile and you’ll see that he has placed 200 some odd posts – whereas (I) the real PAPINYC (me) has over one thousand posts – True Story™®©

BTW – why bring in your perceived issue with one user to another user – just curious*

Oh ScroatShit™ aka Scroaty-Ca-Ca aka Scroat aka Mobile aka PAPINYC iMpersonator:

        Nope – he has no life :{
He even follows me on Disqus so he can reply to my posts as me; I discovered this out a few weeks ago when I logged into my Disqus registered email and there was a new email with the subject line: “PAPINYC is following you on Disqus”
Hypothetically – PAPINYC is following PAPINYC; that’s how ScroatShit™ shows up as me when I actually post – True Story™®©

BTW I say hypothetically above because Scroat is a figment and fragment of his own imaginations (plural); that can happen when one is iNbred and the biological product between two siblings – Truer Story™®©
        No hard feelings

    • Bluelou65

who cares about the launch date of the iphone 5?  i would guess millions of people.

    • Anonymous

      Who cares? We analysts care!!!!!

  • None

How come BGR does so many of these stupid announcement speculation posts?

    • Anonymous

because they are a technology news site, so they post what is news. Even if it is rumors they still need to post stuff. If you don’t like then go read some other tech blog. Oh wait, they all report the same news/rumors eventually, so quit whining.

  • Anonymous

I’m an analyst. The unveiling will be September 3rd.

    • Anonymous

Well…I’M an analyst too! And I say the unveiling will be September 9th.

      • Joe112

No no no.. Its September 5.

  • Stevenagata

Is it just me or does the linked article say nothing about any actual information about the date of the event? Just speculation based on the timing of the music went last year.

Lol already seen two other blogs picking up this story based on this article.

    • Anonymous

The date of the event is September 3, 2011. Thanks for your interest. Erich Heidler, Senior Analyst

I’m a analyst for imploding and exterior farting mechanisms some of these gases anomalies are secretive and have to be inspected from a distance with 3d glasses and multiple bowls of kraft dinner

Very ironic…a day before the presumed Droid Bionic release (Sept. 8)…

  • Jakety Jake Jake McJake

It will be September 6.  Go look at the iPad 2 event invitation.  Among the app icons you’ll see a faint, “9.6″ like that of a colorblindness test with the circles.

  • Anonymous

    Yeah, it’ll be crap.

  • Aburya

It looks like everyone is missing the point of 4G for Verizon, it is not the data speed, it is the convieniece of being able to talk and browse the Internet simultaneously, just like on AT&T.
