FTC antitrust investigators hone in on Android

Legal

Antitrust investigators with the Federal Trade Commission are focusing on Google’s Android operating system and web search services, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Reportedly, there is some concern that Google prevents its Android partners from implementing services provided by Google’s competitors to their smartphones. One example comes from backin May, when Google blocked Motorola from using Skyhook Wireless’ location services on its phones. The FTC is also investigating whether Google promotes its own services over its rivals, and whether it actually uses data that its competitors have collected, such as local reviews, to populate its own results. The FTC announced that it was opening an investigation into Google’s business practices on June 24th and, at the time, Google said that it was not clear what the FTC’s concerns were. The search giant said that it will cooperate fully and will continue to follow its five pillars: “do what’s best for the user,” “provide the most relevant answers as quickly as possible,” “label advertisements clearly,” “be transparent,” and “loyalty, not lock-in.”

Yeah, like how they wouldn’t let Verizon castrate their phones with Bing…oh wait..

I guessed you missed the examples given in the very easy to read, one paragraph article.

      Hooray for openness!

      • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

I didn’t miss those, but I think they’re invalid. It’s google product, they give it away free. They have the right to promote their services while they take a hit developing it. If company B wants to have as much placement as Google in it then they should either A design their own operating system, or B refund Google some of their development costs.

Oh, well thats it. You think they’re invalid. Better call off the investigation.

Isn’t the entire point of a comment thread to express you opinion by “commenting” on it. I hope you’ve never had a thought of your own either..

Fair enough, but Google doesn’t get to play it both ways by saying Android is open. It’s this hypocritical phoniness nature that bothers many about this company.

Google didn’t withhold or threaten to withhold the OS… they threatened to withhold the Google Apps (which includes the market). These parts are NOT open sourced.

That is their right and prerogative to do, and has no bearing on the open source nature of the OS… but why let that get in the way of being a smartass, eh “smackdown” ?

APPLE WONT LET ME PUT ANDROID ON MY IPHONE, WTH FTC?

    • http://twitter.com/fredacampos fredacampos

true dat.  Apple is a far worse offender than Google / Android, on what apps / services to allow / disallow.  WTH FTC..

  • Big Papi

Apple is now the largest company in the United States, and with that, I believe they’ll eclipse ATT and Exxon as the biggest lobbyist corporation as well. I can only believe that, that is what is driving this ‘investigation’

    • Anonymous

I guess you didn’t know that Google spent more than 2.5x than Apple on lobbying last year.

      Company Lobbying (2010)
      Google $5,160,000.00
      Apple $1,610,000.00

Look it up on the web. It took me 10 seconds. It would save from having to make yourself look ridiculous.

I like everyone believes Google is just a babe in the woods while Apple is the great evil. Some people are just puppets of PR.

      • Anonymous

I don’t think Google is a babe in the woods. Corporations are, largely speaking, the same. They’re engines of profit. Any benefit you get out of them is a direct result of you giving them something in return, whether that be money or personal information. People forget that they’re paying Google just because they don’t get a bill.

All that having been said, I prefer what Google provides. Google is going to get punched in the nuts, much like Microsoft did, and probably forced to unbundle the Google suite. Of course, that’s fucking retarded: no one’s going to the fucking Google operating system looking for anything other than what Google provides. If they are, it’s readily available. But… Microsoft got dicked in pretty much the same way.

Sorry, Google. Bend over and lube up.

Exxon is a fucking gas station..its Exxon Mobil…fuck

Is that really something to get so worked up over?
        Pick your battles, scro.

      • Anonymous

It’s worth a lot..invest in the gas station or the company that is worth $360 billion? Do u think it matters now?

      • Anonymous

WTF are you on about.  They are the same company.  Exxon Mobile is the parent company that owns the gas station.  Not that it is important or in any way connected to the article but please spend at least 10 seconds checking your facts before you post.

      • Anonymous

Tell that to wall street, those companies are completely different u troll..

    • Anonymous

We know Google’s perfect and they don’t do evil.  Period!

  • Anonymous

What’s wrong with google trying to suck in all its customers to it’s own products?

In addition, I’m sure there’s a good reason why google prevents partners from implementing competitive apps. We, Goofans (aka Apple Haters) trust Google implicitly because they don’t do evil! Period! So the US government is out of line.

  • Anonymous

Oh and Google can do whatever they want. We will always give them a pass.

Lies all lies, Android is a open platform lol.

  • TED

this also depends on Motorola’s agreement with Google.

Where’s the investigation of Apple for lock-in? No! Yo’re not allowed to buy a book from Amazon without giving Apple 1/3. Bad user! N0! You must buy all media from iTunes! Bad, Bad user!

    • Anonymous

Hmm? I have read hundreds of kindle books on my iPad and phone and Apple never made a penny. Try to at least understand the basics of your own rants.

      • Oreo

Maybe, because they charge the company (Amazon) a fee for the distribution of that said product. So in reality they are receiving a sum of your cash as well.

      • Anonymous

Hmmm… maybe if you did a little reading on how iPhone apps must now have in app purchases routed through Apple and they are not allowed any longer to like out to a website (like Amazon used to do), you would know what the poster was talking about instead of being a wiseass that appears to not know what he is talking about.

  • Anonymous

Finally! It took some time, but at least they are investigating.

However, knowing how FTC works, Google will at worst get a slap on the wrist and perhaps a $10,000 fine.

Strong-arming manufacturers and partners is bad, regardless of who does it, whether it is Google, MS, or Apple.

It just reduces consumer freedom and competition.

    • Anonymous

So you are also rooting for the FTC to make sure Apple allows others to license their OS, create alternate app stores, etc. right?  Or that you can buy a Sony TV but get Samsung apps on it?

  • Anonymous

Google is the definition of hypocrite. They bitch and moan about the legal system but they are the biggest thief and liar on the planet. Google will be dead in two years  true story™©®

  • Bringit

Where are all the AndroidNerds now?  Here’s your non-Apple Android thread!  Hello?  Hello?

    Google = Common thief.

  • Sv

How can Apple get away with this BS and lock up iOS like San Quentin, yet Google is being investigated?

    • kal1ch

Apple’s platform is not open, and they never claimed it was.

Also, their OS goes on THEIR hardware so they get to decide everything.

Android is so overrated anyways. It’s just another google product made to steal your personal info and sell you ads. Sometimes I wish people werent so fucking stupid.

      • Anonymous

There is NOTHING preventing these companies from using Skyhook, or any other competitor with android.  It just means they can’t use the Market or GApps (both of which are closed source)

    • Anonymous

Last time I check the AppStore was chalk full of Google apps. There’s also options to let you chose what search provider you want to use. Lastly Apple does hardware and software so they will never run into a problem like this…

  • Booboolala2000

Android is Google. I would hope that they don’t want other searches on theirs.

  • Anonymous

Google’s not preventing anyone from making an android based device.  Period.  The ONLY control they have is over Google Market, and access to their Closed source apps.

I fail to see how a company protecting their brand image is “anti-competative” when there is NOTHING preventing manufacturers from forking android however they want.

  • Anonymous

Fair is fair and if Google is doing something wrong they need to pay

  • http://twitter.com/canestim Tim Smith

Our government should be focusing on all the stupid patents handed out over the years.  The way I look at is they don’t own a monopoly so they should not be investigating them because they allow the users to customize the device however they want after purchase.

There is Android, iOS, WP7, WebOS, BB, etc.  Microsoft had like a 95% monopoly, that’s no comparison.  There are plenty of choices consumers can go to if they don’t like what Google is doing to Android.

And like others have said it’s not Android, it’s access to the official Google apps.  And the reason the manufactures cave is because that’s probably a huge reason why people buy an Android phone, they are Google fans/users and want the apps.  Any other apps can but put in the market for the consumers choosing anyway.  I don’t see a problem with them putting their apps priority since they put all the work into it, you still have a choice to change the apps/features with Android after the fact.  If they owned 95% of the smartphone market it would be a little different.

    • Anonymous

You are so right.  Because we know that Google doesn’t do evil they should not be under the rules and laws of any country.  ONLY GOD can judge Google.  Amen sir!

I just paid $22.85 for an iPad 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $674 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentHub.com

wow they are really investigating google for this.  seriously… Really with apple right there you are going after google.  amazing.
