Nokia to abandon feature phone, Symbian businesses in U.S. and Canada

Business

Nokia plans to exit its low-end feature phone and Symbian smartphone businesses in North America following the launch of its first round of Windows Phones, Journal blog AllThingsD reports. Nokia has historically had a great deal of trouble placing smartphones with carriers here in the U.S., and the Finnish phone maker has subsequently not had much success penetrating the market. Moving forward, however, Nokia is betting the bank on smartphones in North America. ”When we launch Windows Phones we will essentially be out of the Symbian business, the S40 business, etc.,” said Nokia President Chris Weber in an interview with AllThingsD. “It will be Windows Phone and the accessories around that. The reality is if we are not successful with Windows Phone, it doesn’t matter what we do (elsewhere).” Weber continued, “We’ll develop for North America and make the phones globally available and applicable. In fact, evidence of that is that the first Windows Phones that will ship are being done by our group in San Diego.” Nokia is expected to launch its first Windows Phone-powered smartphone later this year.

Who is looking into Nokia’s acquisition of Novarra in 2010?  The move to all smartphones and lack of infrastructure support means that this purchase was just burning money.

At a minimum, heads should roll.  Also I wouldn’t be surprised if some people on the inside got rich on the deal.

I’d be very surprised if they even get to double digits in market share in North America with Phone 7.  They’re in a lot of trouble.

All they have to do is do solid marketing.  The OS itself already solid and Moto, HTC, and Samsung will not be able to touch Nokia in hardware if their current devices are any indication of what is to come with their WP7 devices.

It was just reported that Tango would be Nokia specific for low end WP7 models. Keep up please. But I’ll miss symbian.

Why is this even a surprise? We knew this was coming. Only the naive thought that Nokia was a strong player in the US and Canadian markets.

    They should
have invested more time and effort making Symbian more modern/user friendly. Especially
considering the massive users base they had. It just goes to show how arrogance
can affect your judgment. They thought the user base was as loyal as Apple
fanatics. What a gross miscalculation. I really wish Nokia had chosen Android
instead, not a big fan of WP7. I still love my E71, best signal strength of any
cell I’ve had. It’s 20x better than the crappy Corporate BB Bold 9700 we’re
forced to use. I still take my sim card out and use the E71 for tethering.

I just paid $24,97 for an iPad2 and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $37,74 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $71,32 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, MetaCent.com
