Apple launches sub-$1,000 iMac for education

Computers

Apple has quietly launched a new entry-level iMac that targets education. The new model features a 21.5-inch display like the current base iMac, but the specs are dialed down in order to push pricing to a slightly more attainable starting point. Highlights include a 3.1GHz Intel Core i3 dual-core processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a 250GB hard drive and an AMD Radeon HD 6750 GPU. Pricing starts at $999, 11% higher than the last iMac aimed at the education market, and the new model is available immediately to education customers on Apple’s website.

Really? Apple couldn’t afford to bring down the price of the current iMacs for education?

Come on Apple you’ve got more money than the US government!

       I couldn’t agree more.

Why bring the price down if you are selling all you make?

      • http://www.rwalrond.com RWalrond

So why then offer the lower price point if they don’t need too? It’s clear that they want to hit this price point, I just think they could have done it with the same specs for students.

Leave it to an AndroidNerd to find the negative in a nice story.

Better get your radar fixed. I’ve never owned or even used an Android phone. I’m speaking as a consumer and iOS developer who has family that are students, saying that the current iMac in Canada is $1199, couldn’t Apple afford to give a $200 discount to students? Or are we not allowed to question the decisions of our Apple overlords?

    Maybe they forgot? LOL

  • bdus

Their pricing is why they have so much cash.

      Still making it rain :)

Way to come down of your high horse guys ::rolls eyes::

This is awesome. As long as the processor is not soldered to the mobo then everything in that is upgradable. This is great news for apple fans.

  • Tony

Why would anyone buy this for “education purposes” when you can get something equally as powerful for half the cost?  Outside of the Apple logo of course…..

Because something else will fall apart in 2 years.

Sub 1000$?  Its 999$ lol  Wow, very sub 1K$.
In case Apple didn’t notice, public schools are  broke as a joke.  This must be aimed at private schools or highly funded public schools.

    • IPwn

      Actually it’s aimed towards colleges.

    GREAT NEWS!

this just sold me on a new Dell XPS 17 laptop, with way more power and $100 less.

    • Zac Caslin

      But it’s a Dell!!!

      • Major Plonquer

YES!  It’s a Dell!  That means it doesn’t use last year’s slow chips the way Apple does.  But more importantly, when have you ever seen someone put ‘I can use an Apple’ on their resume?

I just paid $ 23.86 for an iPhone and my girlfriend loves her Dell laptop that we got for $ 38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 42 inch LED TV to my boss for $ 665 which only cost me $ 62,81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, GrabPenny.com

The difference between the $1199 model and this “education” model is huge and is more then $200.
This model should be $799-899 and even at that price you would still be paying for the apple logo.  The hardware will be obsolete in 1 year, atleast you can use the $1199 model confortable for a few years.

    • Zac Caslin

Not true i have a early 2008 iMac with a 2Ghz core 2 duo and 3GB of ram that’s still going strong even with lion installed.

Apple makes me laugh, I love it how their “sub-$1000 iMac” is $999, I’m surprised they didn’t add on the 99 cents! The specs of that iMac you could get in any other computer for about half that price.

    • Zac Caslin

      And half the quality.

      • Biggles

Don’t kid yourself.  Apple may be of better quality, but it’s marginally better and surely doesn’t command twice the price.

      • Anonymous

How is it better quality if it uses the same components as every other similiar-priced PC out there?  The only “high quality” feature is the glossy, shiny exterior, and OSX.  I’m not sure if that’s worth the $400 premium on this.

      • Anonymous

        I beg to differ.

  • Anonymous

So you get 2 gigs less ram and half the  hard drive, then you get it for $200 less. This does does not seem fair and I love Apple computers. cough bad deal cough.

  • Biggles

If $999 = entry level for a desktop model, then Cupertino = fantasy land.

I paid $22.85 for an iPhone 4-32GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $674 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Another sub-standard product from a sub-standard company!

  • cloney

will it have an IPS display?

  • Major Plonquer

Surely the FIRST things we should be teaching our kids is that you don’t spend twice as much money for a computer that runs at half the speed and has little or no software support?

Moreover, students should beware! Nobody ever puts ‘I can use an Apple’ on their resume. Why? You figure it out……
