'Anonymous' and 'LulzSec' release 10GB of data from 50 police departments

Security

In response to the arrests of LulzSec member Topiary and Anonymous PayPal hackers, members of the AntiSec initiative have infiltrated 50 police departments across the United States and stolen 10GB of data. According to a release put out by the group, which includes members from Anonymous and LulzSec, the data includes “private police emails, training files, snitch info and personal info on retaliation for Anonymous arrests.” It also includes social security numbers, address information, passwords, credit card numbers, training files and more. “We hope that not only will dropping this info demonstrate the inherently corrupt nature of law enforcement using their own words, as well as result in possibly humiliation, firings, and possible charges against several officers, but that it will also disrupt and sabotage their ability to communicate and terrorize communities,” a recent press release said. The data was stored on a single server and the hackers said it took less than 24 hours to infiltrate and copy the information. In a release posted on PostBin, the AntiSec movement called on other hackers to join in and “make 2011 the year of leaks and revolutions.” The group also told the government to give up and said “you are losing the cyberwar, and the attacks against the governments, militaries, and corporations of the world will continue to escalate.”

    There limits know no bounds

In China these assholes would be executed.

      • Anonymous

It’s ironic. They fight to internet freedom but don’t attack the most restricted countries.

      • http://twitter.com/praticuschaotic Jon Doe

Probably because a) most people are aware of China’s problems; b) releasing this info is more domestic and so more of a pressing matter to them; c) what change would occur here if China’s dirty laundry was re-aired?

Their biggest problem is that they’re simply throwing up everything in a large lump rather than actually trying to present a digest of the most pertinent information. 10GB is a lot of information to hope other people will sift through it and find the problems.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, I bet the Chinese are laughing at us right now too. You know the Communist are letting everyone hear about this to show what having too much internet freedom does to a society. Too much information makes you go crazy so its right that we protect our citizens from themselves.

      • http://twitter.com/IamGregSmith Greg Smith

They did it for the lulz?

      • http://twitter.com/livingbasehead Shelton

No, In China they would be recruited to hack other countries.. not everyone just kills people.

      • Anonymous

This isnt china… if you lik their ideals why dont you move there?

    Slow news day, BGR?

    • http://www.absolutefiction.com Jed Tylman

I was thinking the same thing.
I’d rather have news about Apple than this.

      • Brett

        I wouldn’t go THAT far.

    • Anonymous

You really don’t think this is tech news-worthy? Well, I’m sure there’s an article about something some analyst said.

  • Anonymous

When internet censorship and the banning of being anonymous online come to America, this will be the reason. They think they’re helping, but they’re only making things worse.

    • Anonymous

hahah it’s a group of angry europeans. At the end of the day they are not killing any one , just being annoying. I used to care about them in the news, now it’s just like “meh”

      • sirpaul

“Being annoying”??? Are you honestly retarded? The info they released “also includes social security numbers, address information, passwords, credit card numbers, training files and more.” Oh, and snitch info. Dumbass. That can get somebody killed. I can’t stand people who think with their ass. I’m not usually this harsh, but with some people (you, for instance) there really is no other way of talking. Seriously, try to think of all the side effects of all the trouble these guys are causing.

Now you know why China has a country-wide firewall, heavy censorship and internet monitoring. These guys aren’t making things look good for the rest of us.

      • Anonymous

At the end of the day, I vastly prefer these guys to actual terrorists.  You guys have been shouting the same crap about how it “could” get someone killed. There is nothing to fear about them. Every single social medium we use has been restricted, and the internet is no different. They are just speeding it up. Who cares. They will eventually fade.

      • sirpaul

@GizmodoRefugee:disqus Not them directly, but indirectly yes. It can (and has) caused a lot of damage. I suppose I prefer them too….but at the end of the day, I despise both.

      • Anonymous

On the other hand it can prevent people from being killed.. Maybe I should move where you live but in So Cal police are notoriously corrupt and kill unarmed people regularly.. I personally know a woman who was awarded a 2 million dollar settlement last year.. A few days ago an unarmed mentally ill man was beat to death.. 2 cops kidnapped and raped a waitress in broad daylight by my house in Ontario, California 2 years ago.. I could go on and on..

99% of cops are great guys God Bless them but that 1% fucks alot of shit up and the other 99% will lie under oath for them at the bat of an eye.. I don’t condone the hackers actions but there is a VERY bright side to what they are doing.. Crooked cops who don’t respect the law deserve to have their crimes exposed just like any run of the mill gang banger..

      • sirpaul

@Celz:disqus Yes, certainly a few bad cops give the rest a bad name – but problem is they are leaking everything, including info on those that ‘snitched’ on others. Could cause big issues. Also, officers private information that may not be wrong and illegal is also being exposed. It does more harm than good, and I think it is NOT for the greater good.

Everything else I agree with…just going on youtube and watching some of the videos on there make your blood churn. A few phsycos get into the policing area and wreak havoc. Cops do have to put up with a lot, and the dangerous nature of the work pretty much gives them a right to use force when they feel necessary…but certainly certain cops go way overboard. I am lucky to be living in a very crime-free neighborhood (Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada) so don’t know what it’s like where you are. Power gets to peoples’ heats…

I love it when Anonymous is like ‘the government needs to give up.’ It’s overstepping their bounds as a Internet collective meant to share information- not overthrow the U.S. Government- and whenever they do it I look at them like I do at a person on the subway eating at their shoe or a six-year-old thinking he’s someday going to meet aliens.

    • Anonymous

The Wikileaks and AnonymousIRC Twitter accounts were copping some major fallout earlier today for endorsing these attacks.

      • Anonymous

Im fine with them hacking things that dont cause any personal injury…
But I draw the line when Wikileaks and Anonymous do something that can cause people to get killed.

  • sirpaul

I hope they get life in jail – these morons are taking all their freedoms for granted. Our government is way too nice to criminals.

    • Anonymous

Didn’t one of those pasty nerds get busted recently?

      • sirpaul

Yes. I’m very eager to see the outcome. If it isn’t a substantial sentence others will see what they are doing as a sort of game, with little consequences for being caught.

    • Anonymous

Why? because they have dirt on you?

  • http://twitter.com/BriggsTheCanuck Mike

lol.. keep it coming. eventually more and more will get caught. Authorities won’t be afraid. It’s nerd vs nerd now.   Except one side has guns and warrants. They think they are fighting for me, but really, no one cares about what they are doing, or trying to do.

2011 — the year a handful of dumb asses ruined internet freedom for everyone.

We already have ISP’s monitoring content to ensure it isn’t illegally
downloaded thanks to Black Jesus’ Administration “coaxing” compliance to
Big Holloywood. You guys are giving them more reasons to lock-down the internet. Senior Citizens in charge of our country don’t understand Internet culture and any preceviced threat however stupid, really? a-holes hacked PBS, needs harsher digital laws to “protect citizens.”

I hope this is worth it when your holding your child down so they can get their “Internet Identification and Control Chip” implanted in their small hand because daddy pissed off the US Government.

  • Dan

I pray for the the officers and their families who’s information is now publicly available to every criminal and ex-con.

Hackers are the biggest cowards on the face of the earth.  I hope that jail terms are filed based of EVERY individual that is listed in their private records – if the info of 1000 cops got out, then the jail term should be 1000 x 5 years in prison.

    • http://twitter.com/ocdtrekkie Jake Weisz

Just as a point of note, all “hackers” or “people who can hack”, are not like this. There are many talented individuals on the planet who use hacking skills for good, for enhancing security, etc. without harming other people.

Anonymous and LulzSec aren’t just hackers, they’re criminals.

  • What?

Stumbled upon this article and quickly realized BGR is a magnet for fascists. These commenters should move to China.

  • http://twitter.com/IamGregSmith Greg Smith

While I’m all for power to the people, isn’t there a better way to go about this? Maybe even be profitable from it, like how Microsoft hired hackers to increase security?

At the end of the day, we should all know that all facets of corporations, goverments, etc are corrupt because if they weren’t, things would actually be pretty damn good in this world…. but obviously, we are far from it…

  • Brianpaz

How about wiping everyone’s credit balance to 0.00.  Lol that would be great!

  • Anonymous

ok, this has gone too far assholes. I am fine with you hacking companies that deserve it (and can stand being hacked), but don’t go out there and hack stuff that will harm people personally. That is more of a reign of terror than what you are trying to “prevent.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chuck-Wilson/1349086575 Chuck Wilson

You are all complaining about these guys. Yet our own government can’t pay it’s own bills. But it sure can keep giving millions if not billions to other countries. I think you guys need to focus on fixing our government and forget about these kids.

    • Tony

Its the people who complain about the government that usually need its help the most.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chuck-Wilson/1349086575 Chuck Wilson

I work my ass off owe nothing. And own my own house  etc. How about you. You rent? So your the type that say nothing and takes it up the ass. Keep turning you head the other way and stay blind.

  • Olegreg

I said once and I’ll say it again. These guys are a government false flag put into action to close down freedom on the Internet. They have only 1 goal and that is to cause Americans to be afraid of the Internet afraid of how open and unregulated it is. Ordinary Americans will demand that the government kill Internet freedom. Americans will demand that the liberty of a free and open internet be taken from them. Then a cyberwar on terrorism will be launched where the government hunts these guys down but they will never be caught. Open your eyes World open your eyes before it’s to late.

    • Dan

Do you know that Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny both visit my house every year?

COME ON! Prove what you are saying or it’s just mumbo-jumbo nonsense!

  • http://twitter.com/ocdtrekkie Jake Weisz

This is terrible, they’re now potentially endangering lives, not just online identities.
