BlackBerry Torch 9810, Torch 9850/9860 unveiled

mobile

Three torches, two form factors, one goal: silence the critics. Research In Motion on Wednesday unveiled three new additions to the popular Torch family, the Torch 9810, the Torch 9850 and the Torch 9860. The latter two handsets are GSM and CDMA variants of the same device, a full touchscreen smartphone that hopes to pick up where the Storm series left off. Launching later this month with AT&T, the Torch 9810 is a touchscreen smartphone with a QWERTY slider that one-ups the original Torch in nearly every area. Both phones carry the new BlackBerry 7 operating system — no, not QNX, we’re afraid — on top of big, bright displays and solid hardware. RIM noted that in combination with the already-announced Bold 9900, these smartphones will launch on more than 225 carriers around the world. “This is the largest global launch of BlackBerry smartphones in our history,” said RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis in a statement. “The BlackBerry solution offers a best-in-class mobile communications experience that customers love and we think they will be thrilled by the faster performance, enhanced browsing and richer multimedia delivered by these powerful new BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Torch smartphones.” The new Torches and the Bold 9900 will begin rolling out later this month. RIM’s full press release follows below.

“This is the largest global launch of BlackBerry smartphones in our history,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO of Research In Motion. “The BlackBerry solution offers a best-in-class mobile communications experience that customers love and we think they will be thrilled by the faster performance, enhanced browsing and richer multimedia delivered by these powerful new BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Torch smartphones.”

Next-Generation BlackBerry 7 OS
BlackBerry 7 introduces a next generation BlackBerry browser with a significantly faster, more fluid web browsing experience that is among the best in the industry. Combining the dramatically improved performance of the advanced WebKit browser engine together with the powerful hardware enhancements found in the BlackBerry 7 based smartphones delivers browsing  results that are up to 40% faster than BlackBerry® 6 based smartphones and up to 100% faster than BlackBerry® 5 based smartphones*.  Additional enhancements to this next generation BlackBerry browser have also optimized zooming and panning for smoother web navigation and optimized HTML5 performance for incredible gaming and video experiences.

RIM’s new BlackBerry 7 based smartphones also feature Liquid GraphicsTM technology, with each smartphone combining a dedicated high-performance graphics processor with a blazingly fast CPU and stunning high resolution display to deliver a highly responsive touch interface with incredibly fast and smooth graphics.

In addition, BlackBerry 7 based smartphones continue the tradition of delivering the world’s best mobile communications experience with a highly refined and integrated suite of phone, email, messaging and social apps to keep users connected and productive throughout the day. Recent enhancements include the newest release of BBM™ (BlackBerry® Messenger) which now extends the real time BBM experience to a range of other apps (see separate announcement on July 28, 2011). The updated Social Feeds (2.0) app has been extended to capture updates from media, podcasts, and favorites all in one consolidated view. The new Facebook® for BlackBerry smartphones (2.0) app introduces features like Facebook chat and BBM integration that makes it easier for users to connect with their Facebook friends in real time.

BlackBerry 7 OS also includes a number of other pre-loaded applications and integrated functionality for increased productivity and collaboration right out of the box. The Premium version of Documents To Go is now included free of charge, offering users powerful document editing features as well as a native PDF document viewer. BlackBerry® Protect is also pre-loaded**, offering customers the peace of mind that personal data can be backed up and secured in the cloud.  BlackBerry® Balance (announced May 2, 2011) is now integrated in BlackBerry 7, allowing users to enjoy the full BlackBerry smartphone experience for both work and personal purposes without compromising the IT department’s need for advanced security and IT controls. And further, the popular universal search capability has been enhanced with support for voice-activated search, so users can now simply speak to begin searching their device and the web for information.

A New Performance Driven Platform
RIM’s line up of next generation BlackBerry smartphones are built on a new performance driven platform powered by the latest BlackBerry software and hardware. In addition to supporting the new BlackBerry 7 OS, each smartphone also features a range of powerful hardware enhancements including a 1.2 GHz processor, HD video recording, 24-bit high resolution graphics, and advanced sensors enabling new augmented reality applications such as Wikitude that can be seamlessly integrated with BBM 6 – all designed to deliver the ultimate in communications, multimedia and productivity for users around the world.

These devices would probably sell better had they been on QNX. It’s too bad RIM is still using the same ol’ OS. 7.0 isn’t that much of a leap; it’s basically a rebadged 6.1(ish). Hopefully, the full touch phone will work better than the storm. It could be an OK holdover phone until they start rolling out QNX.

    • RIMsucks

RIM is sooo gay. Why the F woould anyone put a trackpad on an all touch screen phone?!

      • Anonymous

Please tell me you’re kidding.  Trackpad + touchscreen gives you the best of both worlds for navigation, copy/paste, and making spelling corrections.
And are you that much of a tool that your username is RIMsucks?  Pretty sad.

      • Anonymous

Not adding to the bashing here, but if rim had implemented a better touch friendly cursor they wouldn’t need the track-pad. Just look at the iPhones copy/paste and cursor select method. Its really brilliant. I really still like rim too.

      • Nightfox111

And Androids don’t have a navigation button?

      • Nikkisharif

My Android doesn’t have a navigation button!!! Its called choices people…if you don’t like it don’t buy it & find something to better suit your wants & needs!!!

    • Curious

Are these in effect obsolete when QNX comes out next year? Or can I just port all apps across?

      • Commenteer

This is the best question that no-one seems to want to answer. My buying a new blackberry is DEPENDENT on if it is upgradeable to QNX or if apps will work across the platforms. Based on RIM’s past history I dont expect that they will ignore the $$$$$$ signs and make the phones upgradeable though

I hope this does it for RIM. I love my Blackberry Bold. I would continue to use it for the rest of my life if they continue to update the software, but keep the traditional keyboard. I need something simple as a smartphone goes. All the fancy stuff can be done on a tablet.

I agree with the comment about QNX vs OS “7.0″.  I have the original Torch and it’s not nearly as good as my iPhone or even my original Droid from Verizon.

  • Colbyraskull1991

I see rim pulling a microsoft and ditching 7.0 later on and starting over from scratch, cause in the US they are plummeting when it comes to smartphone sales

    • Ug

brilliant guess!,,, rim has, a number of times, pretty much confirmed this already :P

    • Anonymous

      Brilliant!

    • Nightfox111

What the hell you think QNX is? … besides everyone has done it at one point…. Apple, Microsoft, and Palm/HP all have dumped there old OS’s for new one.

I have been the biggest BlackBerry fan in the world.  Even convincing my CEO years ago to distribute hundreds of them to employees.  People loved them.  Today, however, I find myself so underwhelmed.  I was so excited by the Torch.  But it was so bad that I returned it the same weekend I got it.  First for me.  I wish them the best of luck.  I just question the forward-thinking aspects of this company.  I don’t know if they have a good handle on where the industry is going.  We’re slowly moving away from a device-driven industry, and yet, RIM is just finally FINALLY catching up to the last wave it seems.  That tells me that they are way too far behind from a platform and ecosystem and that Apple, Google, and Microsoft are building.  I’d love to return to the BlackBerry platform as I will always be a fan.  But I don’t know that current management has what it takes.

What is a good use case for having a track pad on a full screen device or even the sliding form-factor for that reason?

    • Bobdonhim

The trackpad is used for fine navigation.  Ever try to go back in an email to correct something?  If using the touchscreen with larger fingers, you just can’t seem to get the cursor in the right spot.  That is where the trackpad helps

    • BlahBlah

Fat fingers suck for precision. The trackpad would let you do without the multiple pinch-zooms before you can accurately select your link on the screen.

  • SheriffBart

I had an Iphone for one year an ditched it for a Blackberry Bold.  I love my Bold.  At least I can make phone calls with my Blackberry.  I have several friends with EVO’s an Droids, and they have their issues.  So there is no perfect device.
I’m pulling for Blackberry.  Competition is good for all of us.  I think the new Bold will be on my wish list.

I will be replacing my iPhone 4 with a 9900 when it’s released (hopefully next week on Rogers!).  The apps are good on the iPhone and I love the screen, but the workflow of items, communication and battery life are lacking.  I will probably just use it sim-less as an iPod Touch.

        Wow

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CJEX6WIBYZEEOBZGPNNWJYXABQ Steve

this is that exactly what i have been feeling, phones like the iphone and android devices are great for media and games, but when it comes time to put all of that away and truly and confidently communicate with ppl a bb is the best way. and with these new devices and the QNX monsters in the pipeline, you will be able to have fun and get your work done with your BB.

  • Anonymous

Finally they catching up with the sepcs. Now they need to catch up with the OS.

    Biggest screen 3.7″=fail

    • Tom

So you must not like the iPhone 4 with the same screen dimensions??

    • Anonymous

A 3.7″ slab with BB OS is just rubbish when you think what it competing against. As for the real Torch, I get it as I do the Bold, they should sell well but anyone getting the slab Torch needs their head testing.

  • http://twitter.com/MurkJenkins Mark Jenkins

Wait….BGR didn’t trash talk them and they’ve been announced for a whole 2 hours?

    • Steve Jenkins

      wait for it….wait for it…..

  • http://twitter.com/hawaiiinsomniac hawaiiinsomniac

Can’t wait to try out these phones.  I’m an Android user, but in Central and South America I travel with my unlocked BB Curve (not to mention cheap pre-paid monthly plans), BB are very popular here and the BB Messenger is great.

Wish Virgin Mobile would pick one of these newer models up!!

  • Bringit

It’s pretty much a full page of non-Apple threads – and the total comments do not equal the average amount of comments in an Apple thread.  Where are all the Android whiners in these threads?

    Hypocrites.

    • Bringitsdad

Probably enjoying some quality time with your mom. She is a cheap little slut you know.

  • Rudy

I have the Torch now, after giving up my iPhone, looking forward to taking this one more step and getting the Bold 9900 next month!  It is exactly what I NEED, and want
