Apple rumored to be prepping imminent 'iTunes Replay' launch

General

Apple is preparing to launch a new service that will allow iTunes users to re-download previously purchased music, movies and TV shows for free, AppAdvice reports. The service may also support some streaming functionality according to the report, though such functionality may be limited. In the past, iTunes users who lose content from their libraries were forced to either purchase the content again or essentially beg and plead with Apple customer service until they agreed to assist with free content restoration. This ridiculous practice is now in the process of coming to an end. AppAdvice claims to have confirmed the imminent launch of the iTunes Reply service with multiple sources, and such an offering has rumored to have been in the works from Apple for quite some time. According to the report, we can expect iTunes Replay to “go public in the coming weeks.”

haha wow they didn’t have this already?!?

Exactly… This is what I dont understand… Everyone says how iOS is such a great user experience, but then we read about this kind of crap…  How is this in any way a great user experience?
Since I had my G1 in 2008, I have been able to redownload my apps again and again for free…
      Wow…

      • http://www.facebook.com/applelover Tim Meesseman

        Probably because it’s rarely needed.

      • Anonymous

No disrespect but this is the problem with Apple supporters; apologies.  For a very long time people I talked to who loved iOS made the case that they didn’t “need” a more robust notification system like that found on Android.  Well, when they get it (iOS 5) guess what, they LOVE it, they absolutely NEED it.  I don’t want Steve Jobs telling me what I “need”.  I can make that choice myself.

      • Anonymous

Your G1 is not a proper comparison so it has no place here. iOS users could also re-download apps. This has to do with deals from movie studios. Amazon has had this for awhile and Apple should’ve had it a long time ago.

      • Jeff Palladino

Let me make one thing clear… They are talking about iTunes for PC/Mac, not iOS. If you own a iOS device you can go to iTunes on it and re-download any music/app that you have previously paid for.

iTunes itself has been lacking this feature and it was only a matter of time before it was implemented. When you think about it who really deletes music from their library, unless you are trying to hide those Backstreet Boys and Nsync guilty pleasure albums…

      • David

Actually, iTunes already has a Purchased link in the store, allowing you the same access to previously-purchased content as on iOS. It’s part of iCloud and now almost 2 months old.

      • Anonymous

Apple let’s you redownload purchased music and apps over and over again for free.
Try using an iPhone so you’ll understand what everyone is talking about.
I got an unlocked Samsung galaxy s2 from amazon about a month ago can honestly say that Android experience feels undone compared to iOS.

      • Anonymous

I have used an iPhone, my son owns an iPhone and my other son HAD an iPod touch prior to getting his Samsung Charge.
You are right… No comparison… I will take Android any time…
And yes, my son with his iPhone 4 is ready to move to Android after this last weekend when he finally got tired of saying “My phone cant do that!”

      • Anonymous

You don’t understand because you are making up things that aren’t there. It doesn’t say anything about apps in the entire article because apps have been able to be redownloaded for free the entire history of iOS.

      • Anonymous

You cant compare your experience to Android…
When I get a new device, I can sign in with my google name and password right there at the store.

Inmediately, my music is there and available in the cloud.  All my apps are redownloaded automagically.
All my contacts, tasks, calendar, gmail and such is automagically there for me.
All my settings are restored, my wallpaper put back to what I had.

There is NO comparison in that to an iOS experience in which I have to wait to get home to plug in to iTunes.  Only to find that my computer crashed and I lost everything…  OOOPS now what?

      • Anonymous

I have been redownloading music since the anouncement of the icloud on my ipad, itunes and the ipod touch. you just need a recent version of itunes or 4.3.3 ios. I have not bought any TV or videos but I am sure they would include that eventually. I am excited about what the icloud service will support. As far as all of this Android can do this or that. Who cares??! I think it’s great that people who love Android can do those things and I think it’s great that it is catching up where it used to lack in Aps and features. Now Apple is working on catching up with other features. There will always be a feature that one has the other does not have, but I own only Apple products and I am very pleased. Competition is good for Apple users and Android users, but it silly when a fanboy Android user or Apple fanboy user takes time yo post in forums that don’t pertain to their favorite device.

      • David

zapote21: iCloud does exactly this and is already live in the iOS 5 beta (to be released generally in another month or so).

      • Anonymous

          @zapote21:

“Inmediately, my music is there and available in the cloud.  All my apps are redownloaded automagically.

All my contacts, tasks, calendar, gmail and such is automagically there for me.

All my settings are restored, my wallpaper put back to what I had.”

Really dude?! Android backs up everything down to the wallpaper? What kind of google fairy dust did you use on your phone?

I’m going to have to call bull s*** on that.

Before I got my GS2 I tried out the HTC Sensation for a couple of weeks
and I had downloaded several apps for it. I wanted everything backed up
to my Google account like you claim you did when I got the GS2, but all
it did sync to my phone was my email. I had to redownload all the apps I
did before and yes I also had to re-set a wallpaper and no I didn’t
have to repay for the paid apps.

        No “automagic” downloading there.

iTunes back up of an iPhone beats any REAL Android back up service.
You’d have to root and download extra apps just to back up everything.
Yes, you have to plug it into your computer, but it’s the most
comprehensive (yet simple) backup process out there on the market.

Android may do more than iOS, but it does very few things better.

My iPhone 4 runs everything on the App Store. I can’t say the same for my GS2 and the Marketplace.

3rd party apps also look and run better on iOS than it does on Android,
even on a dual core phone like the GS2. You’d have to be a blind fanboy
        to say otherwise.

And to answer your stupid question

“There is NO comparison in that to an iOS experience in which I have to
wait to get home to plug in to iTunes.  Only to find that my computer
crashed and I lost everything…  OOOPS now what?”

Back up your old phone in another computer, then back up your new iPhone.

The whole process will take less than an hour.

Do you want a faster solution?

        Get iOS 5.

      • Aerimus

first off… You have ALWAYS been able to redownload apple apps.  I have heavily used both Android and iOS devices.  The bottom line is that iOS is a smoother experience, but Android allows you to do more.  I enjoy both, but frankly I have far fewer issues and MUCH better batter life on my iPhone than on my Android phones.

    • sirpaul

I had no idea either! I’m going to backup my apps on a hard drive now. That is just ridiculous.

      • Anonymous

if you log into Itunes on any new Apple device right now. You can download all music and Aps to the device with out connecting it to a home computer. I do all the time. In fact you only need to connect it once to a computer to get it running and they will do that at the Apple store, and that won’t be necessary after this falls next update.

  • Joshua Wright

This service should already be in place, but considering this is Apple, it is nice that they have decided to give this feature to their users….

  • http://edgarrodriguez.com Edgar R

wait my iTunes in the Cloud beta includes this already. i’m hoping this is the streaming component.

    • Anonymous

Streaming is the component I want. I agree, they worded these features are all new and the streaming is the only news there. lol

  • Anonymous

Ridiculous that this hasn’t already been in practice

    • Anonymous

Ridiculous that google doesn’t offer anything to do this with.

      • Anonymous

Exactly, so why even mention google. Unless, your trying to start useless bickering

  • Dc313

Yeah, wait, music and books have been available for re-download since WWDC, and TV shows since yesterday. So what’s new, just the movies part?

  • Mosey Levy

who wrote this article ? are they on crack?
we already have this minus the movie feature.
we can currently re-download and music or tv show we ever bought.

and we already have streaming functionality via apple tv for previously bought tv shows.

zach, bro, you been under a rock? or you just wrote the article wrong?

    • Anonymous

Thanks for pointing this out, I keep hearing about this replay features coming but what is the difference between what we have now and this feature.

  • Mosey Levy

you’ve been able to redownload apps since the app store came out for free. music since wwdc. and tv shows since yesterday. this article is completely off and if anything only offers the idea that movies will be re-downloadable soon as well . . which is pretty much logical at this point.

  • Ashley Keith

“imminent launch of the iTunes Reply service with multiple sources” – spelling error!!

  • Jeff Palladino

The current work around is if you own a iOS device just go to iTunes, and find the “purchased” tab. Here you will find a list of all previously purchased song/albums by artist. Download it to your device and then sync to iTunes.

If you do not own a iOS device then you are sh*t out of luck…

    • Booboolala2000

Which almost half of smartphone users are.

  • http://dinkdoink.com Elliott

Uh, except for movies, this is already in place. Did you guys even think when you posted this?

  • BlahBlah

    About time. Innovation.

  • Anonymous

So, iTunes is a “cloud” based service that does not stream?  Magical.

  • Anonymous

What would really be awesome would be the ability to put in a legit CD and once iTunes recognizes I already own the music, download it for free.  I’ve got a pretty large CD collection that I ripped into iTunes, but a ton of songs couldn’t be ripped because of damage to the CD.  I’d love to have that music back without having to pay a whole bunch of money.

  • waht

The only ridiculous practice I see is users that don’t protect their investment by making their own backups.

  • barry j egan

wrong, you already can do music and books.

i was emailing them other day because i couldnt seem to find an audiobook in it that i had gotten. they sent me the standard email about figuring out what i’d lost so they could restore it with the “one time” magic

  • Anonymous

Umm this can already be done for the retards that are yapping the their I don’t know shit gums. With music, apps and tv shows.

  • Rusty

they do this already.  I downloaded/bought a few songs on my mac, moved them to my PC, then deleted them from my mac.  After icloud rolled out, I had the option to re-dowload old purchases through iTunes.  Was easy..

I just paid $ 23.86 for an iPhone and my girlfriend loves her Dell laptop that we got for $ 38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 42 inch LED TV to my boss for $ 665 which only cost me $ 62,81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, GrabPenny.com

  • Anonymous

Uhhh, I downloaded all music I’ve ever purchased from iTunes to my work computer right after WWDC. This is already possible. WTF?

You may want to read the full article and not just the first paragraph posted. He does mention many of the items people have commented on regarding redownloads now and what may come soon.
