New Samsung Galaxy Tab with high-res Super AMOLED screen may land in September

Tablets

Samsung has reportedly started to build a new high resolution version of its 7-inch Super AMOLED prototype displays. According to the Korean website etnews, Samsung is upping the resolution to 1024 x 768 pixels and will begin production of the new displays “soon.” Additionally, the sequel to the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab could land in North America as soon as this September, when it is largely expected that Apple will take the wraps off of its new iPad and iPhone products. We are definitely excited about redesigned Galaxy Tab with a Super AMOLED screen, we just hope Samsung packs it with Android Gingerbread this time around. Thankfully it sounds like we won’t have that long to wait until we find out.

Whatever the size… I’M GETTING ONE! I’d prefer a pocketable 7″ tho. Stop reiterating what Steve says just to bash… think for yourselves. 7″ tabs are much more portable and pocketable than 9.8/10.1. And I currently own an iPad, btw.

I didn’t read anything in this article about ‘what Steve says’.

    • sirpaul

Why own an iPad in the first place? I still think the iPad is a huge waste of money. Funny how everyone was bashing it and saying it must be some sort of joke when it was first announced. I had friends saying that the one talked about was a prerelease and that the actual one would have much better specs and OS. But no such luck. But of course since it is Apple, the maxiPad (credits: PAPINYC) still went on to become the most popular tablet ever, by a wide margin.

      Sad!

    Packs it with Gingerbread? really??

    Honeycomb, please.

    • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

Yeah, it will most definitely ship with Honeycomb.

    • Anonymous

Could have been sarcasm. It BETTER have Ice Cream, EFF YOU MEAN! lol

    • Anonymous

lmao . . . I thought the same thing…. Gingerbread? Coming off rather uninformed there Toddy . . . Honeycomb 3.2 was built with smaller screens in mind… No One wants a Gingerbread Tablet…. at all.

    • zps

      right?  what?!!

    • ice crean sandwich

Yup Todd Haselton you get a thumbs down on this article for saying it should come with gingerbread. Also it will not come with honeycomb as it does not support 7″ display….Ice cream sandwich is what we all need to hope for! That is the mix of best of both worlds from honeycomb and gingerbread.

I think 7 inches is the sweet spot for tablet size… At least for me. Carry everywhere without being a burden.

    • sirpaul

That’s one of the main advantages of the PlayBook (besides all the features and beautiful OS). I don’t want to carry a freaking binder with me – the whole point of tablets is portability or I’d just use a laptop. Even when playing games, that thing is too huge considering how close your face is going to be to the screen.

      • Anonymous

I would own a Playbook if it only had email, contacts, calendar, and mobile data. Those are the basics for me. When it happens I am likely to buy one. I like what I see on it and have played with so far.

LMAO!!! 7 inches with gingerbread. D.O.A. This will be returned at a higher rate than the 40+% for all other androids. Android will be dead in two years.  true story™©®

You’ve got a lot of opinions but not much in a way of facts. Do you have a link for your 40% claim? BTW, I heard that 50% of all iPads get returned (because of backlit, dead pixels and other problems).

      • Anonymous

Ya ok stfo moron nobody is returning iPads. Go to best buy and look in the cages and see all the open boxes of xooms, playbooks and galaxy tabs. The percentage for androids both tablets and phones may not be 40% but it’s definitely way up there.

Doesn’t matter, steve jobs and his group of ifags will find some ridicilous reason to sue samsung for the release of this tablet and fuck shit up again. Fuck Apple!!

    • Bringit

Agreed!  They are all fags!  And they should let Samsung and whoever else steal as much of their shit as they want to!  Fuck innovation – it’s much easier to steal!  Yeah fuck them!

      • Anonymous

Pointless to argue with mindless sheep :)

      • Bringit

Agreed!  Fags and mindless!  Only companies and people that steal have great minds!  The rest are mindless sheep fags!

You mean packed with Honeycomb 3.2? ? /correction

  • http://twitter.com/EricSeale Eric in Milpitas

I love Samsung but I must say this is not impressive. I expect 1280×800 ~4.5 inches before Jan 2012 for ICS.

Holding onto my SGS/GT-i9000 until they ship ICS

  • Anonymous

    Too small

    • Anonymous

Our cocks? Ya mine is 4.5 inches. Yours? What’s your email address? Want to trade pics?

      • Anonymous

1st that is disrespectful and uncalled for, I could be a 12 yr old kid. Your joke was in poor taste and should have you banned.

Here at BGR we don’t have comment moderation. If you want to participate in real conversations, come by when Scroat [and a few others] aren’t around, or just read Engadget.

I am mostly against comment moderation, but shit like this should be taken care of. Adds absolutely nothing to the conversation.

That’s what she said to Scroat last night.

Scroat is in LOVE with me; he posts as me using my handle and avatar (which means he’s downloaded and uploaded me) and it also means that he’s gone through the trouble of registering as PAPINYC on DISQUS – albeit the iMpersonator*

He even follows me on DISQUS – that’s how he knows when I post a comment*

      ….aaaaaand that’s-what-she-said!

I am a huge fandroid. But even I know when something is shit. This will fail miserably. Apple doesn’t mess around with crappy products. They just build the best. I know android will eventually figure this out and we will take apple down. Until then we still have higher market share!

    • http://apple.com Yes_iHave_an_iPhone

      Very true..

    I’m a douchebag

  • Anonymous

Something is wrong – the 1024×768 size display is 4×3 ratio like iPad.
16×9 tablet display should be 1024×576
AMOLED or not – it is not important. It is important to be Android Honeycomb 3.x OS, not 2.x  one.

    • James Gale

imo AMOLED is very nice… unless you’re trying to use it in the sun.

      • https://market.android.com/details?id=com.eddiehsu.mathgame Eddie Hsu

weird that you say that because one of the feature of amoled is working better in the sun. my nexus S amoled works way better than my evo 4G lcd in the sun because of the deep black and high contrast colors. the difference is enormous too, especially if you turn up the brightness on the amoled, but auto brightness is good enough.

  • http://www.bignerdblog.com BigNerd

    Bah… silly distractions.

I’m still waiting for my Sum-tember 8.9 Galaxy Tab release.

  • James Gale

    Only 1024 x 768?
Am I the only person who would prefer 2048×1536?
Even on a smaller screen, I’d prefer mega hi-res and to bump up the DPI.

That said, cool looking device.  Samsung really seem to be coming in to their own, hardware wise.

  • batman

Why do you WANT gingerbread over honeycomb? Or maybe ice cream?

  • Hkssupplies

Can’t wait for this. 7 inch is easily the best size for on the move.

  • Eludium Q36

This is a step in the right direction, but when the Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a super amoled+ display then that’s when I claim one.

  • Artsheart

I will buy this the millisecond it comes out in the US!

Love my Galaxy 7″ tab. If more juice is coming, all the bettet!

  • RICO

Hopefully they add HDMI out and USB hosting support.
