Russian government may ban iPad, adopt PlayBook or Android tablets instead

Tablets

The Russian government is considering disallowing the use of Apple’s iPad tablet within government agencies due to security concerns, Russian-language business news site RBC Daily reports. Instead, it is investigating various alternative tablet options including RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook, Android-powered tablets or even a new device created by a Russian agency. Government security experts are reportedly looking for more “cryptographically secure tablet PCs” than Apple’s iPad tablet, and if the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology’s recent certification is any indication, the BlackBerry PlayBook could fit the bill. RIM announced last week that its PlayBook tablet received FIPS 140-2 certification, thus allowing it to be used by U.S. government officials. No other tablet has received FIPS certification to date.

    BLACKBERRY PLAYBOOK IS THE BEST!

We tried the PB in a enterprise trial .

It was a really mixed bag affair , and I would be surprised if they implement it there.BB Bridge problems and serious lack of app support really made it difficult to recommend.

We liked the centralized nature of it , but the user experience has to be seriously improved soon.

have you tried it since the recent updates? the bridge is a different ballgame now. the bridge feature will be copied by apple and android… guaranteed.

      • Jeffrey Fay

Not by Apple. Apple doesn’t copy.

I updated every playbook to the most recent firmware that was available at the beginning of this month.
Bridge to the older phones went surprisingly without hassle , but we had very intermittent problems with the newer Bolds or Torches.

Did you say the Russian Gov’t is looking at Android tablets in lieu of iPads due to security concerns?

Is this the same Android OS that had some 50+ apps pulled because they were stealing your personnel data?

Hey go for it. I’m sure the CIA wouldn’t complain a bit- get my drift.

It’s a gov’t tablet. The OS is going to be locked down pretty hard. Do you honestly believe that they’d leave the OS open so their employees could install what ever they want?

good job RIM. don’t compromise your bread and butter security advantages for the tech geeks who cry for useless gaming apps. your conservative procedures will be worth it in the long run.

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentHub.com

But will they figure out how to give a % of each app sale to the Russian mafia??? :)
