Apple's iPhone accounted for 66% of Q2 smartphone profit among top vendors

With just two smartphone models available for sale, Apple took in two thirds of profits from smartphone sales in the second quarter among the top eight vendors in the world. The news comes following Strategy Analytics’ confirmation that Apple is also the world’s top smartphone vendor by volume. Four of the eight major smartphone vendors were profitable in the June quarter — Samsung, Apple, RIM and HTC — while Nokia, Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson all reported losses. Total profit from sales of smartphones among these eight companies declined overall in the second quarter, but Apple’s profit share jumped from 50% in the second half last year and 57% in the first quarter of 2011 to 66.3% this past quarter. Samsung’s profit share hit 15% in the June quarter, RIM stayed level at 11% and HTC grew from 6% in the first quarter to 7.4%, a new high for the company. Another graphical representation of smartphone profit can be seen below.

    How can that be?  Typically, Apple’s products are a lot more expensive and I could understand the profit, but not in phones or the iPad.  The top phones all sell at the same price…  Could it be that the margins are lower at the Android level due to heightened competition among Android vendors???  My understanding is that Google would protect all those other OEMs and bring their margins up…  What am I missing???

      Simple, Apple retails the phone at 660$, so when you buy it at 200$ on contract, the carrier forks over 440$ to Apple. The SGS for example is 500$ retail (even though sgs has better hardware) and Evo 4g is 400$ retail. (when they came out)..So Apple makes half of its profit from the carriers.

      hey…. most people don’t care if they have a 3G or an 8G phone.   They just want a browser and apps (email texting, and facebook;-).  and of course phone calls.   Apparently Apple gives them that in a package they prefer.

      You and I, we need _real_ Gs (and the backhaul to back it up), but those that plink an address in for a map to a location…. not so much.

    Imagine if Macs had more and better made software than PCs and cost $750.  That is what the iPhone is right now.  An iPhone costs $200 when new Android smartphones cost $250-300 when they come out (Thunderbolt, Charge etc…).  I am Android phone user, because I like to customize my phone, but it doesn’t take a genius to see why iPhones are popular.  They are easy for the gadget challenged to use, they have great software, have a great camera for a phone, and they are relatively cheap.

      There’s plenty to be said.  If Apple were to license iOS like Android and WP7, then their profit margin would drop like a rock in water.  But since there’s no competition in that ecosystem, they can charge what they want.

    Good for apple! Although I attribute that more to Apple’s marketing strategy and apple loyalists, more than apple really being the best mobile operating system out there.

    I am a huge apple fan. I have all their products, except for the iphone (not anymore).
    Android will any day be my choice over ios. It is light years ahead. Plus I am really disappointed with Apple being so sue-happy these days. It may get apple more money in the short term, but really backfired on them in terms of PR.
