Nintendo posts first quarterly operating loss; 3DS now just $169.99

Gaming

Nintendo posted its first quarterly operating loss ever on Thursday in its fiscal first quarter earnings report. The Japanese gaming company recorded a net loss of 25.5 billion Yen ($328 million), which was on a par with the net loss of 25.2 billion Yen ($324 million) the firm reported during the same quarter last year. In addition, it posted a net operating loss of 37.7 billion Yen ($485 million), down from an operating profit of 23.3 billion Yen ($299 million) during the first quarter of 2010. Nintendo also slashed the price of the 3DS to $169.99, down from the portable gaming console’s original $249.99 price point. Nintendo attributed the poor quarter to a lack of Wii and DS sales, as well as a lack of attractive games for the 3DS.

Your gimmicks didn’t work this time.

    • Fl0resivan

I wouldn’t say they were gimmics because if it weren’t for the wii or ds there would be no kinect or move. The portable is berely in it’s infancy and the ds took off even faster after the ds lite and better games came out. It’s too early to tell anything right now we just have to wait and see.

I’m pretty sure the 3DS is gimmicky… This whole 3D craze needs to go away… The Wii is not a gimmick because as a pretty seasoned gamer there are some games that are fun to play on Wii.

Maybe if Nintendo didn’t only have the absolute whackest games for it’s consoles, it would sell better. Political Correctness doesn’t sell video games! It’s like they have never heard of or live in a different reality where game makers like, Rockstar, Sucker Punch, Infinity Ward and Sega don’t exist! These people make the best games on the planet… invest! Out of all the systems, ever, Nintendo has always had the worst games, but they’re still around, surprisingly. Step it up Nintendo!

HAHAHA…. People ask me if I play video games, my response, “Yeah, sometimes!” They ask,”Oh what games do you like, WOW? Halo? Call of Duty?” I respond, “No, Im a Rockstar mother fucker! I ONLY play Grand Theft Auto and I fuck hookers, kill cops and steal your moms car bitch!” We all end up laughing.

They make f’in excellent games that show innovation, creativity, and replayability…… if you don’t mind buying the same Mario, Starfox, Mario Kart, and Zelda games all over again. Why the hell do i wanna play the N64 Zelda game again on my 3DS? Nintendo has ALWAYS been the family friendly, casual game console you buy for your kids. The SNES version of Mortal Kombat had no blood in it while the Sega version looked it was having a period.

Releasing a game system without the games people wants is just setting it up to fail. Almost everyone I know didn’t buy it earlier because there wasn’t a wide selection of good games. The Wii U is going to be a huge step in welcoming the Third Party game makers since Nintendo finally acknowledged they need them to compete. Its also a new focuse on the “hardcore gamer” this time around. We are not Neverland Kids – we all grew up and our tastes have changed, screw Mario Kart and give me Gran Turismo!

And Im sure that Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Meltdown had absolutely no impact for Nintendo what so ever, right?

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, WildCent.com

    Good luck, Nintendo.

    WAKE UP!

Great move. Its now priced at a mass consumer price and by xmas it will have quite the base of fantastic games. It will still easily meet its 15m first year sales prediction Nintendo gave it. As well as have a major lead on Sony’s Vita when it launches late this year/early next.

3D on 3DS is as much as gimmick as Wiimote was on Wii. The problem is the 3DS didn’t launch with its own Wii Sports to really demonstrate the feature and make a must have game.

BTW, you forgot to mention that early adopters will be entitled to 20 free games, 10 from the Nintendo eShop and 10 Gameboy Advance games : )

I like nintendo in general, but this is a pill they needed to swallow.

    adapt or die.

that was almost expected, looking at todays phones like the new LG optimus 3d & HTC EVO 3D, it cinda asks the questions wouldn’t Nintendo be better off making an ipod like device or even a cell phone. This device is too big offering too little for its current time.

The 3D feature was a great idea in terms of adding functionality to an already successful handheld device, but too many overlooked factors attributed to its difficulty in selling in the market. I mean the most COMMON mistake vendors make, is the lack of software to help sell the device. There were barely any launch titles for the console to sell successfully in the first quarter. But more importantly, the 3D functionality was a great idea, but its absolutely terrible for the eyes, and most of us generally spend hours on these handheld devices.

The main problem with Nintendo 3DS / DS in general is the game price. It’s very expensive £25-£30 per game. Which was OK before iOS/Android. But in this economy alot of parents might just get their kids iPod Touch as it does so much more and the games are alot cheaper and alot of them are free. They now need to focus on their App Store, make all their games available for download and cut the game price now that they can reduce the production cost.

PLUS the headache / bad for your eyes reviews surrounding 3DS didn’t help either. It’s a lovely device. I love it!

Ok, I thought I was the only person that had no idea wtf the article was talking about. Was it the first quarterly loss ever, or was it the first quarterly loss ever this year?
