Nielsen: Apple top U.S. smartphone vendor, Android top OS in Q2

Business

Android continued on its warpath this past quarter, once again showing gains as it retained its position as top smartphone platform in the United States. Nielsen on Thursday issued its second-quarter smartphone market share data for the U.S., and Android finds itself atop the list again with 39% of the market. IOS remains in the No. 2 spot with 28% and RIM slid to 20% in the second quarter. Windows Mobile and Windows Phone combined to take 9% of the market, while webOS and Palm OS combined to account for just 2% of the market. Nokia’s Symbian OS also held a 2% share in the June quarter. On the list of top vendors last quarter, Apple held its lead by a wide margin with 28% of the total U.S. market. HTC devices accounted for 14% of Android market and 6% of the Windows Phone/Windows Mobile market, making it the nation’s top vendor in both categories and No. 2 overall. Samsung owned 8% of the Android market and 2% of the Windows Phone/Windows Mobile market in the U.S. last quarter, while Motorola topped Samsung’s Android share with 11% to slide into the No. 2 spot among Android device manufacturers.

    Apple wins again.  Say it!

Why immediately turn this into a flame war?  People like you are the worst.

      • Bringit

How is stating facts a flame war?  You are jealous and worse than the worst!

    • JL Jones

Not quite – #1 smartphone maker yes, #1 mobile platform, no…

      • Anonymous

Don’t forget profits. That’s a big, fat #1 for Apple.

      • http://listeningtoreason.com wanorris

So when you go out to get a computer, do you buy an IBM mainframe? After all, if you’re looking to buy from whoever will profit from it the most, that’s the ticket right there.

      • IPwn

I think you meant to say “#1 smartphone platform no” because iOS leading in market share for “mobile platforms” when you count all the “mobile” devices running iOS (iPad, iPod, AppleTV, etc)

      • KCRic

Apple lovers will always dig as far as they can into their ass to come up with some remote reason to show Apple is still winning. They are losing, sorry. With the iPhone and iPad available on the two largest carriers (T Mobile has a pretty good number of unlocked ones also) tell me why Android is still climbing? Must be something to this little green guy…

You speak of market share and revenue – that’s like comparing a baby to an adult in size. You’re comparing an OS that’s been around for a ‘massive’ two or so years to a phone that’s been around 3 times as long. Lets not forget also that Android isn’t built to suck your wallet dry. Apple on the other hand sees your money in a different light.

      • http://listeningtoreason.com wanorris

On what planet is an Apple TV a mobile device?

      • Michael Scrip

@dd93db1ceb018c02c4af53c3a4293d2c:disqus – “They are losing, sorry.”

In sports with 2 teams… there is one winner and one loser.

In a competition between 6 mobile platforms… 2nd place is far from “losing”

You’re right… Google is doing very well… 39% of US smartphones are running a Google OS.

But… there will never be a situation where HTC, Motorola, Samsung and “other” team up together… since they are all fierce competitors.

Again… great numbers for Google…. not so great for the individual manufacturers who actually sell the phones. Isn’t the iPhone 3GS still outselling a lot of Android phones?

On a side note… I find it funny that RIM has almost twice as much market share as Motorola…. I guess those weren’t the Droids you were looking for :)

Your posts are lame, you live in your parents basement, and your 65 yrs old, kill yourself. There, I said it…Oh wait, you were talking about Apple…

      • Bringit

My posts rule, just like Apple.  You are a jealous loser but time and drugs may heal that.

      No. Google wins again.

what does apple win at? not at marketshare, and not as smartphone vendor. Does anyone still not understand that android is outselling iphone completely? It’s extremely telling that even a single vendor (HTC, samsung, etc) is growing nearer and nearer to selling as many phones as iphone outright.

  • http://twitter.com/kenypowa Ken K.

Five years ago, if someone predicted Apple and a small company named HTC would grab almost 50% of smartphone market share in 2011 where as Nokia and Palm would get 5%, he would have been labeled as insane.

    • http://listeningtoreason.com wanorris

The funny part is that BGR completely buried the lead. Apple as leading hardware vendor and Android as leading OS is stuff that everyone already knows.

The real headline is “HTC Passes RIM to become #2 Smartphone vendor in US.” That’s a huge change, though you wouldn’t know it from this article.

Almost as important is the rebound in Windows-based phone sales on what could only be the release of the HTC Trophy on Verizon. Apparently now that Windows Phone is on all 4 carriers, and Verizon in particular, there are more people interested. And can anyone believe that HTC is selling almost as many Windows Phones as Samsung is selling Android phones?

There is some fascinating data here. Leave it to BGR to ignore it since the interesting parts aren’t about Apple.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mrjwsmith Jeremy Smith

14% Android share and 6% WP7 share is about equal to 20% share for RIM.  My thinking is that if RIM can get QNX phones out within 2 quarters they will be able to halt their slide.  Remember, RIM hasn’t launched a new phone in several months.  HTC has launched several new phones of late, and may not again for another couple quarters, as the Sensation, EVO3d, Dinc2 are all new. Plus, HTC is at the mercy of other companies (MSFT, Google) and isn’t in control of their own fate.  And no matter how Android grows, HTC is also fighting among the other Android vendors. Google can’t let HTC dominate the Android platfrom, or it would risk losing the other vendors.  RIM doesn’t have that problem.

Because smartphones are evolving so quickly and clearly seen as disposable, anything can happen.

(Not a crackberry fanboi, I actually use the 3VO, but don’t count out RIM yet)

  • http://twitter.com/PTRZK Matt Pietrzak

You mean, the only company which releases phones with iOS is Apple? Shocking!

    • JL Jones

      ROFTL! nice one!

    • JL Jones

Just imagine if Apple did license iOS to other smartphone manufacturers…..

    • http://www.facebook.com/applelover Tim Meesseman

You could make the same argument about Android being the top OS.

“You mean, the company which releases it’s OS to dozens of hardware vendors for free is Google? Shocking!”

Both companies are doing very well in their own way. Can’t you just accept that and not be a tool?

      • TooMuchNoise

mobile OS religion zealots will just be that. trying to start up some sort of mobile OS religious war like the taliban. LOLZ

I know right?  That’s the reason I don’t like BMW, because the only car they have with their name is BMW.  They don’t give other car manufacturers the ability to market cars with their brand.  BMW is so stupid.  Just like Apple.  That’s why us Goofans (aka Apple Haters) are such geniuses.

  • Shanghai Dan

Is there any question why Apple is going after HTC with patent lawsuits?  HTC leads the biggest OS out there, and the one that most analysts say will challenge, and probably surpass, iOS (Windows Phone).

  • Anonymous

I actually am surprised by these numbers. You’d think with the massive amount of Android phones on the market that they would capture more market share than they have.

    • Anonymous

… you don’t think 39% market share is meaningful for a company whose first phone ever came out less than three years ago, considering the incomprehensibly ridiculous run away success of the iPhone, the firmly-entrenched BlackBerry, and Nokia’s still-massive headway in Europe?

      • Anonymous

Where did I say it wasn’t meaningful. I said I was surprised at its market share considering they have so many manufacturers producing Android handsets at a furious rate.

      • Anonymous

Ah, my bad. Misread your statement. Seems the pace only really jumped up last year, or maybe late 2009. I suspect this same graph next year will have Android and iOS far outstripping everyone else.

  • epilo

Rim is soooo dead! ONLY 2nd biggest smartphone seller.

    • rinklighter

Props to you for actually reading the chart. Sadly, rational thought has no place in the BGR comments. Try writing something like “Blakberryz iz stoopid” or “they iz a dying company.” That’ll get you a ton of likes here.

    • Anonymous

Look into the details dumbass. Take nokia for instance. 24% of smartphone market share world wide. Why are they on the brink of oblivion? RIM has a shrinking market share and an ASP (average sale price) of low $200′s. Their ASP has declined every quarter from $350+ in 2008. Apples ASP is $500+. Do you understand that this means RIM’s numbers are an illusion? They have sold more phones than ever but are getting 40% less money per phone. Don’t get caught up in market share when the phones that make up that share are worthless pieces of junk.

      • epilo

I think they’re talking about NEW subscribers in the US for the 2ND QUARTER.

        1. Worldwide RIM is doing considerably better.

        2. Rim hasn’t produced any new phones the last 9 months. So your argument about price is invalid.

        3. Rim makes more recurring revenue from monthly subscriptions per phone than apple makes on an average iPhone from app purchases.

I agree that rim had a rough 6 months and has to play catch-up, but it is very very far from dead. That was my main point.

BTW, I’m typing this on my 9780 with my iPad 2 sitting on the table next to me because I feel much more comfortable typing on the ‘obsolete’, ‘outdated’ BB keyboard!

      • Anonymous

apple hasn’t made a new phone in over a year. Does that invalidate their ASP? no they still sell phones just like RIM and samsung and motorola and htc. And they still have an average sale price. Not sure what the hell u r thinking. RIM’s last quarter was 700 million. 20% was from services. So 140 million. Will be generous and say they earned this 140 mill for 12 quarters. So 140 x 12 = 1.6 billion and thats very generous. Did not look into apples app revenue but I know apple had paid atleast 2.5 billion to app devs so to keep 30% and pay devs 2.5 billion they would have had to bring in 3.6 billion. Earning 1.1 billion for themselves over three years. 1.6 vs 1.1 and I’m going to bet it’s a lot closer than that. Yes world wide rim is doing better. IN SALES OF UNITS but you still fail to understand that the ASP is lower. They are selling more but making less. And the true numbers that matter are the forecasts/guidance by RIM themselves and the fact that they keep MISSING those numbers.

    • Anonymous

Sorry man, but they are on a march downward at an increasing pace each quarter. That’s fine if you don’t want to accept that, but them’s the facts.

    • http://listeningtoreason.com wanorris

Third. As the article mentions, HTC also has 20% and has passed them to be the number 2 seller.

But hey, they’re still triumphing along in that #3 slot. Sure their share is declining rapidly, but hey, that doesn’t mean they’re doing badly or anything. Why would anyone think that?

  • Jim D.

“HTC devices accounted for 14% of Android market and 6% of the Windows Phone/Windows Mobile market”  NOT!

HTC Android Phones account for 14% of the total smartphone market.  HTC Windows phones account for 6% of total smartphone market.

    • http://listeningtoreason.com wanorris

By BGR’s analysis, Android phones account for 39% of the Android phone market. You don’t think that’s right? ;-)

Fellow Goofans (aka Apple Haters) take this report as it is, BS.  Since when has Nielsen been a reputable agency?  I have a hard time believing any agency that doesn’t make us (Google) the top on EVERYTHING.  We are the top selling phone PERIOD, not that crappy Apple stuff.

    • rinklighter

“We are the top selling phone…” What’s the “we” part? Do you work for Apple? Do you own Apple stock? Since when did OS’s become a team?

      • Anonymous

Huh?  I hate Apple mate.  I have to heat them with all my heart or my friends will stop talking to me.  For real men, and smart men, it’s not cool to like Apple.  So, to protect myself from being bullied I’ve learned to hate Apple.  So I ask you, WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD  I BUY APPLE STOCK???  Google stock?  That stock I own because Google will protect investors if the stock goes down.  Cause that’s how they roll.  They don’t do evil!

      • http://twitter.com/PTRZK Matt Pietrzak

I can’t tell if your English is bad or if you’re being sarcastic. In case you aren’t. The value of Apple stock is a very good reason to have owned it back in the pre-iPhone days.

      • Anonymous

@twitter-134662866:disqus My apologies.  The only mistake I made was “heat” instead of “hate” in the third sentence.  Other than that my English was pretty darn clear and correct.  Thanks for the concern though.  When I get angry I think in 3 languages so I write fast and may make one mistake or two.  :-)

Android is better cuzz it has higher market share. This means the manufacturers are making more money than Apple right?

      Damnit scroat!
How is your argument any better?

Android “better because of market share”

Apple “better because they make money hand over fist”

And the winner is HTC… less than a few years ago, the average person had no idea who HTC even was… now they’ve got 20%(combined Android and Win) of the US smartphone market… no wonder that Apple is using lawsuits to stem HTC’s growth. Yes, Apple has 28%, and RIM has 20%, but HTC’s growth from 0 to 20% in such a short time is spectacular.

  • Anonymous

But but but RIM is dead I thought!  20% market share and they haven’t sold a new phone this year yet.  I wonder what will happen when they release their new phones next month?
RIM will be dead in 2 years.

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, WildCent.com
