Hands on with Verizon’s 4G LTE Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Tablets

Verizon Wireless just sent us the 4G LTE-equipped version of Samsung’s flagship Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and we’re ready to deliver our initial impressions. First things first: this should go without saying at this point, but this puppy is ridiculously fast. Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network is unmatched when it comes speed and latency — from the user’s perspective, it’s pretty much like being connected to a Wi-Fi network. A few quick tests performed just outside New York City showed the blazing-fast speed we’ve come to expect from Verizon’s 4G network, ranging from about 12-15Mbps down and 3-5Mbps up. On the hardware side of the equation, Samsung’s LTE tablet has undergone a handful of cosmetic changes. Holding the slate in landscape orientation, the stereo speakers have been moved up the sides of the device to accommodate the power button and the volume rocker, which are now on the left side of the Tab 10.1 instead of up on top. The back of the tablet is also slightly different. It now features a gray plastic rear cover with a brushed metal effect. We like the look of the new back but unfortunately, the quality seems to be a bit lacking. Within a few minutes of removing the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 from its box, there were already a few scratches on the back case. Overall build is solid, however, just like our original limited edition 10.1 model, and it’s still remarkable that Samsung was able to make this tablet so thin. Check out our hands-on 4G LTE Galaxy Tab 10.1 photo gallery below for more photos of this sleek, speedy slate.

Loving mine, so far. 4G is so necessary on a tablet.

    • Anonymous

Not if your main usage is in the living room. WiFi > 4G and no 2-year contracts involved.

      • DaHarder

There’s always the WiFi-only version for that… For the more demanding user, this is currently the connectivity champ.

Has anyone made official if the LTE version has a (working) microSDHC expansion slot?

      • Anonymous

        WROng

      • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Chris Gustafson

It does NOT have a MicroSD slot.

      • http://twitter.com/King_Of_Caps Jason

Only the XOOM & Asus Transformer, as far as the popular Android tablets are concerned, have a micro SD card slot

      • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

Well my main usage isn’t in the living room lol. And who bought it with a two-year contract? I bought it out-right with a month-to-month plan.

      • David

So you paid even more!    BRILLIANT!!!

      • CD1090

Work, class, home all have wifi. My xoom doesnt need 4g.

      • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

Yeah, I miss that from school. Literally wifi everywhere.

      • http://profiles.google.com/jayq330 Jonathan Oquendo

if anyone already has an lte phone it would be smart just to hotspot your tab than get a separate plan.

      • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

I hate contracts too, but 4G > WiFi, even inside my living room. And my home internet connection is no slug. Verizon LTE is truly amazing.

    • Anonymous

Yeah specially if you want to eat the 2GB of data in just a few days lol.

      • DaHarder

Then just use the month-to-month plan to pay for that time period.

      • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Only thing that sucks is Verizon is going to charge you an activation fee (I think around $35) everytime you turn it back on.

I asked when I started service up on my Xoom…

      • Anonymous

@Rob Then just suspend it without billing like I do with my 4G Mobile Hotspot. You’re not charged and when you reactivate it, no reconnection fee.

      • Anonymous

@Rob I’m pretty sure VZW got rid of the activation a few months ago for tablets

    • Bringit

So not.  But enjoy your Android slablet for $529 with a 2-year contract.

      • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

Who bought it with a two-year contract? I bought it out-right with a month-to-month plan.

      • Anonymous

Is that still 529 if you don’t mind me asking?

      • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

@ApplesNAndroids:disqus It’s $100 more to buy off-contract. Totally worth it (for me) because I know I wont keep this for a whole two-year contract, saving me the ETF fee of $350.

      • http://profiles.google.com/jshurak Jeff Shurak

You honestly don’t have ANYTHING better to do?

      • Bringit

Than do the same thing you are?  Nah.

      • http://profiles.google.com/jshurak Jeff Shurak

        I’m sorry I was working

      • Shanghai Dan

Perhaps you can enlighten us about another 10″ tablet with 4G built in?

Thought so…  But you keep loving that EDGE network!

    • http://twitter.com/King_Of_Caps Jason

Was size do you have? 16GB or 32GB

  • tabslayer

Love it but notice that Cisco AnyConnect will not install…..Waiting for TW??

  • http://twitter.com/mikemosh511 Mike Mosher

I have gotten as high as 22 down and 8 up while on Boston’s northshore, just so people get an idea of the capabilities.

  • Bvoss1987

Awesome! Verizons 4G network it’s pretty amazing!

  • Herbert Vasquez

how does it compare hardware wise to the moto xoom?

    • Anonymous

helluva lot thinner. The Xoom felt really sturdy though, hopefully this does too…

    • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

I have/had both and it’s like night and day. Sure, on paper a few ounces doesn’t sound like a lot but when you’re reading an e-book you really appreciate the lighter Tab 10.1. My XOOM’s screen was cloudy looking compared to the Tab which apparently “has the best screen on a consumer tablet”. Overall, I am extremely happy with my Tab and I love the 4G because it is sort of “future-proof”.

      • Anonymous

Not surprised about the screen… Samsung has really been leveraging their TV technology to make some amazing cell phone screens. Makes sense that the same would be applicable when talking about their tablets.

  • Anonymous

Only $529 WITH a 2-year contract. What a deal! LOL

    • Anonymous

      U cheap?

      • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

I think a lot of these people are. Don’t want a contract? Get it month-to-month.

  • Anonymous

I want to be able to complain!  Why are you guys writing:

    1. Not about Apple
    2. A good story about an Android product

This is NOT fair.  We, Goofans (aka Apple Haters) love to complain and you are not allowing us to do so.  So, please get back to writing exiting stories about Apple will ya!

  • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

So envious Samsung came out with an LTE tablet before the Xoom got upgraded!

That being said, I don’t have LTE in my area so it would have been nice on the trips out of town but not necessary for a contract, or even month to month (I’ve canceled my month to month data plan, set to expire in like 10 days).

  • Anonymous

What Motorola should have done was make the Xoom, LTE-ready out the box, instead of having users send the model back in for a week of inconvenience, just to do a hardware upgrade. They were probably banking on having users just say screw it and not go through the hastle of returning the device. If Motorola is smart, they would start sending Verizon LTE-ready Xoom’s now.

Alteast Samsung was smart in making it LTE-ready out the box.

    • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Chris Gustafson

      The chipsets weren’t ready!

    have fun with touchwiz!

    • Anonymous

Looking at the picture here, TouchWiz is still a no show.

      • Anonymous

        Wait two weeks

Verizon has a seriously jacked up mentality when it comes to ETF. The 2yr agreement only generates a $100 savings; however, Verizon charges a $350 ETF if you want to break your contract…

    • Noname

Actually, for non advanced devices, the ETF starts at $175 and goes down by $5 a month when you make payment. Advanced devices start at a $350 ETF and go down $10 per month.

  • mrsFAB

    Meh…

That gray backing was the same one  I had on my Tab on initial release day. AFAIK it’s the “normal” backing, and hasn’t changed since launch.

And yes, it does scratch somewhat easily. Some sort of case or protective layer is a must.

    • John

Yeah, I actually have the white back, but I’m using the OEM book cover (which I’m sure most people use a cover), so who cares what the back looks like

P.S. the OEM cover is legit

  • http://apple.com Yes_iHave_an_iPhone

Damn it, I thought this was an iPad article.. Very well then, I’ll be on my way out.

  • Anonymous

Wow, even the packing is similar to the iPad’s.

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, WildCent.com

Which hardware layout do you prefer? This or the Wifi?

  • Anonymous

    No to Verizon

  • http://twitter.com/King_Of_Caps Jason

Nice wonder when Sprint will get theres. Still, the Asus Transformer is the best deal aside from the lack of 3G/4G I was thinking about this but at my job they are installing free WiFi for customers & employees & I already have it at home.
