Apple to launch iPhone 5 in early September, iPad 3 later, report claims

Apple will launch its next-generation iPhone smartphone during the second week of September, China Times reported on Wednesday. Apple is said to have an initial order of 4 million iPhone 5 handsets on order for launch, plus another 400,000 units being manufactured now as part of a trial run. The same report states that the wait for Apple’s next iPad may be longer than expected, however, due to component shortages. Apple is reportedly now aiming to release the iPad 3 some time around the Thanksgiving holiday in November — which could make for a Black Friday nightmare the likes of which haven’t been seen in years. The iPhone 5 launch timing reported by China Times lines up well with BGR’s exclusive report suggesting the next-generation Apple smartphone would become available from AT&T in early or mid-September.

      that’s ironic! because i keep getting daily reminders that ppl like you are tired of hearing of the iphone 5 coming in sept…

      really though, this news helps me because my contract ends in 2 weeks and knowing that its early sept. release instead of late helps in my decision to hold off until this comes out before i decide whether to jump on the galaxy ship or the apple boat. (i have a first gen android and am itching to upgrade)

        Really?  So you admit to getting daily reminders of people tired of hearing the iphone is coming in September….which means you frequent iphone pages.  Now, are we really to believe that a rumour regarding the iphone coming out in early September helps you with your decision to wait or not?  Please….if I know a phone is coming out in September I expect for the worst (September 30th), and hope for the best (anything before the 30th).  Again, this is not official, it is a rumour…so at this point and time, how helpful can it be given all the other rumours regarding the iphone.

        why would a rumor not help me in my decision? In the business world, a rumor about an acquisition or a sale would churn the markets greatly. For me, knowing that its coming out in sept. pushed me to a “maybe i should wait until it comes out.” The strong possibility of it coming out mid sept. rather than late sept. pushes that sentiment to “i think i will actually hold off until it comes out”. If anything, the rumor placates my decision to wait it out rather than getting a galaxy as soon as it comes out. The rumors represents possibilities that I might be missing out on if I got the galaxy in the interim is all, and I welcome that. Contrary to your beliefs, there are people who do watch out for updates even on rumors. For example, there is a possibility that the U.S may default/suffer a credit downgrade. Doesn’t mean it will happen but of course its driving the decisions and actions of many individuals in the world.

        One little problem…a rumoured release date for a phone to the end consumer definitely does not have the same implications of an acquisition or a sale in the business world; as well, the possibility that the US may default/suffer a credit downgrade does not fall in the same realm of a rumoured release date for a phone. But perhaps I will just chalk it up to my thought pattern….if I hear something is going to be released in a month, my understanding is that my wait can end as early as the 1st, but go on as long as the 30th…with no firm release date on the galaxy, unless you are importing, it seems odd that 2 to 3 weeks more of waiting would be the make or break point. Is this source so credible that we can upgrade the rumour to a “strong possibility”?  If anything, the rumour just keeps you in the waiting game.

        haha i know 2 weeks doesn’t sound so bad, but I got the mytouch 3g roughly a month before the iphone 3GS came out – horrible mistake on my part and you don’t know how bad i’ve been longing for an upgrade. I agree the analogy was on a much more macro scale, but bringing it to everyday life, if you hear a rumor that your coworker was going to get promoted/fired, and he has indeed been getting less work/attn (minor supporting detail), then one might readily accept that possibility as a strong one. I dont know if I know anybody who can readily dismiss all rumors they hear without it affecting their decision making in some way. It’s a mix of news and rumors that have kept me in the waiting game, and bottom line I guess is that i’d rather wait than settle for less, and these rumors give me a general expected timeline to plan/back up/defend my decision to wait at least until the iphone comes out. For measure, I also know theres been rumors about the Nexus as well, but i’m not stupid enough to wait for that.

        Hahaha….I agree; I want to get a tablet, but have been hanging on to the rumours of an Amazon tablet.  My wife keeps pressuring me to get an ipad 2…and now I am following the rumours regarding the ipad 3.  So yeah, I am in the waiting game as well…instead of settling for something less.

      What I find curious about this argument is that the same people who say things like “Everyone wants an iPad 2, why release an iPad 3? Apple is dominating this segment of the market.” Are the same people who bash RIM and say things like “this is what happens when you don’t innovate and just assume that because you have 40% of the market people will continue to buy your device.”

      Those who don’t learn from history repeat it.

    It makes sense.  You don’t want each product to steal the thunder from the other and it’ kid of ridiculous to launch a device in March only to see it out of date 7 months later.  Plus, I doubt Apple stores have the capacity to absorb the crowds for both devices.  They have enough trouble absorbing crowds when one launches….

    i’m very impressed with how apple can keep this news under wraps for so long and time releases perfectly. by not committing to a date more than a few weeks in advance, they can let the date slip and not worry about the public’s opinion (other than….i wanted the iphone9 and ipad12 yesterday) let alone the stock price.
