UBS cuts RIM estimates as company faces steep challenges

Business

UBS analyst Amitabh Passi on Wednesday cut his price target on shares of Research In Motion stock to $30 from a previous target of $41, and reiterated a Neutral rating. Passi stated in his note to investors that RIM is currently facing challenges in the “platform wars” underway between companies like Google, Apple and Microsoft. While the analyst sees the successful launches of RIM’s BlackBerry 7 phones as being important for the Waterloo, Ontario-based vendor in the near term, he says the company’s successful transition to QNX is much more important to RIM strategically. In other words, there’s still hope if BlackBerry 7 devices aren’t a collective home run. In the meantime however, Passi says that UBS’s checks reaffirm RIM’s declining smartphone market share. “Our store checks also show accelerating market share deterioration for new subscribers during June and July as multiple top-tier Android products have been rolling out and Apple continues to gain market share,” the analyst wrote. As a result, Passi cut his revenue estimates for RIM’s fiscal year to $19.8 billion from $21.1 billion, and he lowered his EPS estimate to $4.82 from $5.81. Also lowered in Passi’s note were his smartphone unit shipments estimate, which dropped to 51.5 million units from 54.9 million, and his estimate for PlayBook shipments, which now sits at 2.5 million units compared to his earlier projection of 3.6 million tablets.

Free tip: Build a phone consumers want. Don’t cater to keyboard-clingers and tech-mental midgets who ‘hate apps’ because their phone already does ‘everything they want it to do’. Drop those people. Immediately. They still own VHS. They are cheap. They don’t upgrade often. They hate apps and love Brickbreaker. Drop them. Force them to upgrade. Make them use a virtual keyboard. Let’s see where they go.

I mostly agree though I think they should keep the traditional Blackberry around just to keep the old fogeys happy and bridge the transition for them and to keep them loyal to RIM. Cut down the line of 15 Blackberries that all look the same to a high and low end and stop with new OS updates. Just promise security patches while concentrating almost exclusively on QNX with no physical keyboard.

Why have apps when real smartphones have real browsers?
Who wants to have apps anyway?

When you use your desktop computer, do you go to an app?
The best smartphones don’t need apps, because the browser renders the internet the way it was supposed to be rendered.

      • BurleyShells

Yes I have various software programs for my desktop computer, ala “apps”. The internet can’t do everything, especially not on the bold’s 2.4″ screen

      • Mac

        This a sarcastic joke, right?

      • numetheus

You are joking right? I use apps all the time. My password keeper for servers at work is an app. My financial management? An app. Someone sends me a spreadsheet through email? An app. Check my Exchange email? That is an app also. Someone wants me to approve a flowchart they have created while I am on the go? I run an app. I need to search for a place to get sushi with work mates? An app. Need directions to a conference? I run an app. I am going to take a break so I want to play a good game? I run an app for that.

You obviously don’t really use your smartphone like lots of people do. Maybe you SHOULD stick with a Blackberry because you apparently have very limited use of a smartphone.

      • Applesucksfatties

you want to be like your fellow iSheep, so you go download another fart app….

      • numetheus

You too. Repeating the same argument like a mindless parrot. On my Android, I just searched for Fart and found … wait … get this … HUNDREDS of fart apps. Fartdroid Fart Machine, Fart cushion & generator, fart sound board, motion fart, noble fart, sneaky fart … the list goes on and on. Android is worse than iPhone for fart apps. So … you were saying?

      • TooMuchNoise

I’ll bet you that you have a lot of “girl-friend” apps too. LOLZ

      • numetheus

Yes. You have to have a place to keep track of all of the ones I meet. I think your girlfriend added hers to my book last week. I took your mom out … she wasn’t cutting it.

      • TooMuchNoise

Are you aware that those “girls” in your “girl-friend” apps are not real people but just computer animation that you’re flicking, swiping, shicking, and stroking on your iphone screen.

      • numetheus

No. I’m pretty sure your mom was real. I removed her because she was very bad at sex.

      • TooMuchNoise

Pretty impressive that you can get off on a piece of glass.

      • numetheus

No no. The girlfriend app just has your mom’s contact information. But like I said … no need to worry. I removed her because she was bad at sex.

      • Applesucksfatties

Repeating the same argument like a mindless parrot?  Android and Apple fanboys always spout the same useless rants about RIM.. so your comment is like the pot calling the kettle black.

Ps.  Nice avatar!!  If that is actually a picture of you, I love the gloves… they go well with the t-shirt that you picked up in the boys department at Walmart.

      • numetheus

Yes. That is my picture. I was doing volunteer work cutting hams at St Vincent De Paul to prep food for the needy. I can’t wear good clothes while I do that, so yes … it was from Walmart. I do these things so people like you and your mom can eat.

PS. Nice avatar! Wait … you don’t have one. Maybe because you are either too fat or too ugly to post it.

      • Applesucksfatties

Good job.. your just a regular Mother Teresa..   Not too fat or ugly to post an avatar (although marriage has put a few extra pounds around my waist)… I don’t have an avatar because iBGR is a garbage blog.  I only come out here with the hope that one day they might actually have some real breaking news to report and not news from ‘trusted sources’ or ‘anal..ysts’.

You make it sound as if web apps are as fully-featured as native apps.

They aren’t. Not on *any* platform, but especially on touchscreen devices.

    • Lanarjf

You sir- are an ass. I love Blackberry- have a blu-ray-like some apps- am very generous- have 5 lines so I can have multiple phones and upgrade as soon as they are available- and lastly………I HATE brickbreaker. Stop you stereotyping and shove your virtual keyboard up your ass!  Then lets see where you go and how fast.

      • risky

risky – If it ever falls back out people might mistake it for a Storm.

    • Applesucksfatties

You back out here Maxi, posting your 3rd grade rants about RIM?  I find it funny how you never respond to any replies that people post to your assine comments ….you just tuck tail and run like a little bitch waiting for the next RIM article to be posted on iBGR so you can spout your mouth again.  I have an idea…why don’t you take your virgin loser ass upstairs and go wash your momma’s back and stop wasting our time with your moronic comments.

RIM IS DEAD. No one wants to type in a physical keyboard. RIM will be gone in two years.  true story™©®

    • http://twitter.com/n8d n8d

      You’re an idiot (True Story).
RIM isn’t sinking because they have physical keyboards. They’re sinking because they got arrogant with their technologies and fell behind.
You probably present yourself on your FB, Twitter and in person to be some tech guru, when in all actuality statements such as yours just show your ignorance to the smartphone world.
Unless of course you’re just wanting to ride on JG’s coat tails.

Damn, can anyone be more arrogant than one-size fits all “you’re holding it wrong” Steve Jobs. LOLZ

    • http://twitter.com/UrbanEnigma Yves

I’m not even going to justify this post with a legitimate response. You’re an idiot.

    • zacamandapio

      Scroat,
At the rate you’re going RIM will never die.  Everyday you extend it by two years.

    • Tedley

Maybe if they don’t change their ways, but in two years?!?  That’s laughable.  Look at their balance sheets and income trends, they still have plenty of money and cash flow to ride out incompetent management for several more years.  Hopefully they WILL wake up and modernize.  Keep in mind also, that they are hugely popular in some countries outside the US who less demanding of having “the latest and greatest” gadgets.  If their main market was the US then I would agree with you completely.

I agree with your final conclusion, but your timeline is just off a bit.  :)   BTW, Plenty of people want physical keyboards.  If they didn’t why are HTC and Samsung making androids handsets with them?

    • Applesucksfatties

nobody wants to type on a physical keyboard, yet Motorola and other manufacturers are releasing new phones almost daily with keyboards…..  hmm.  Once crApple makes a version of the iPhone with a physical keyboard, will you shut the f*ck up about RIM forever?

  • Anonymous

This is getting old…….how much longer will it amuse you to pick on the poor geeky fat kid?

  • Bitchfarts

    He mad ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/soldierjim Jim Eakins

All the Rimbots should start to go apeshit over another RIM bashing article.

    • Applesucksfatties

while all of the iSheep come out here and post how great Steve Jobs told them that their crApple products are…….Baaaaaaah!   Baaaaaaaah!

  • http://twitter.com/BeanTNT Bean

i’ll buy RIM for about 10 bucks

UBS got sued for $900 million by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac today for driving them into the ground, does their projection ever come true or didn’t they learnt their lesson already?

  • Romy Eckardt

Isn’t it funny that most of these Financial analysts who are scoffing at the blackberry more than likely and i mean 99.99999 (to infinitum) percent use blackberries within their corporation?

    • BurleyShells

so because they use them theyre supposed to be biased and mislead investors about company forecasts?

      yeah its funny

    • TooMuchNoise

Maybe some of these so proclaimed “Masters of the Universe” should stop using them so that they can help all of us and the world by being less productive at Mass Wealth Destruction and destroying the world. Give them virtual keyboards and more Angry Birds to slow them down.

    • Notagoodsign

I’m kinda not sure whether you meant that as a positive for RIM? If the analysts have first hand user experience of the product as you say, but still print scoffing articles I’d be pretty darn worried. myself…….. ;-)

  • Racer416

$30 is still above current market price of $25. Take these so-called analyst estimates with a grain of salt….

  • Mac

I just want RIM to die quickly, the slow death is harder to watch.

    • Applesucksfatties

why?  are you bitter that there is a group of people that refuse to become iSheep?

      • Old Git

Well said sir.  There are far too many people in this World willing to drop everything at the drop of a hat for the “next big thing”.  I for one find even the BlueBerry or whatever this thing is called just a passing fad and intend to stick resolutely to my trusty FiloFax.

RIM’s problem is they can’t get devices out on time to compete in the market. Yes the new BB are coming out but so is the iPhone 5 & the Samsung Galaxy S2 – by the time the 3G & 4G enabled Playbook drops the iPad 3 will be released & the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 w/ 4G will be released. When their devices come out there’s stuff missing or there’s just too many bugs ex. Playbook. They are doomed if they can’t fix this problem!

You all sound gay arguing. fact.
