Major software update hitting Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on August 3rd

Samsung announced on Wednesday that it will hold an event on August 3rd during which all Galaxy Tab 10.1 owners can bring in their tablets to have them updated to the latest software build. The update will add Samsung’s custom TouchWiz user interface, which includes live panels and mini apps, as well as a redesigned Samsung Hub application. It will also install Words with Friends, Amazon’s Cloud Player for music and Amazon’s Kindle software. Galaxy Tab 10.1 owners in the New York area can bring their units to the Samsung Experience Store at Columbus Circle between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to have their devices updated for free. Those outside the New York metropolitan area will receive an over-the-air update “soon.”

    Anyone with a Galaxy Tab SHOULD NOT do this update. Your plain vanilla Android OS is far superior.

      True, but then they’re stuck on that build of Honeycomb unless they root. It seems Touchwiz is more widgets and apps then a complete skin though.

        agreed, Samsung has stated that the new Touchwiz UX will be pretty much stock Android Honeycomb with the addition of some new widgets and a mini app bar for you fav apps. Google has stepped in and asked Samsung to tone down there UI. Im happy that Samsung kept it clean, they where getting out of control.

        I liked lg’s UX a bit before they changed the launcher around though, it was much like this. A bit of widgets, nothing more.

    When I went to Staples, I asked the sales guy for the 10.1 and the first thing he said was “What are you buying it for?” When I replied, “development”, he said “Ok, because this thing isn’t going to replace a laptop for you”. No problem, I assured him, we’re app devs, and we know what we’re doing. Then, the manager came over to verify the coupon I had and asked the same question again. Again I replied “development” and he asked “Of what?” rather indignantly.

    “Uh, Android apps?” I replied incredulously.

    “Oh, ok, because we’re selling a lot of these things, and we get a LOT of them back. People buy them thinking they’re getting rid of a laptop, and they all come back returning them.”

    That doesn’t seem to be happening with iPads, because I think people’s expectations are set accordingly when they buy them. These are not full computing devices; they’re not built to be – and yet when you watch the commercials, what do you hear? The “full” internet. Flash. Do it all. Why wouldn’t people be disappointed when they can’t actually replace a computer with a device that promised they could?

      I overheard a woman in the apple store ask “can I plug in things to my ipad?” The “genius” said “no, just for pictures” and she said “but every single android tablet I’ve seen has microUSB support!” And stormed out of the store. Needless to say, the guy didn’t sell an ipad for the next 30 minutes because everyone overheard.
