Apple’s Siri-based iOS voice controls dubbed ‘Assistant’

mobile

It has been about 15 months since Apple acquired Siri for a reported $200 million, and it looks as though we won’t have to wait much longer to see the deal bear fruit. In line with earlier reports, 9to5 Mac has been sent evidence that Apple will introduce voice controls in iOS 5. At present, the voice control features within iOS are lumped together in a service called “Assistant,” though this is not confirmed to be the launch name. A screenshot said to have come from an iPhone test unit shows a toggle to activate the Assistant service — and old style toggle rather than the slider from the new iOS 5 UI, interestingly — and 9to5 Mac claims to have verified the service by analyzing Apple’s latest iOS 5 SDK. “‘Assistant’ does not work only based on a user’s voice inputs, but Apple will take information – securely – from user’s devices like location, contact’s information, and music metadata to formulate the best information to serve a user’s request,” 9to5 Mac’s Mark Gurman writes. “Since Apple will be taking information such as phone contacts and location, we truly think that ‘Assistant’ will work just like the Siri iPhone application does; but fully integrated into the operating system.” The source of the screenshot says that the feature just went into testing, however, and it may not be ready in time for the initial release of iOS 5 this fall.

What’s interesting on the screen shot, is that it is from the old (I.E. Pre iOS5) UI, where on iOS5 the toggle switches have more rounded corners… Just observing that it might be a false/fabricated screenshot…

    doesn’t Android do this already?

I don’t know, but is this article about Android?

Android has an “Assistant” A.I. built in the core of the OS? I thought that was simple text to speech and voice search.

      • Anonymous

Siri had intuitive speech recognition, i.e. you could say “find me a seafood restaurant downtown”.

Android does everything already.  It’s simple.  Android thinks already and is self-aware.  Android will think of new features that would be great, tested or not, and self-implement them.  That’s the power of openness and freedom and only Google can achieve that.

Choice, freedom, and openness FTW!! Apple FTL!

      “doesn’t Android do this already?”

Android has voice-activated controls for sure.

But Siri let you say things like this: “I need a reservation for 2 at 7pm at a good steakhouse” and it would set all that up for you.

Since Apple bought Siri and they are calling this new service “Assistant” this might be what it is.

Android will no only make the reservations for you but cook the meal and feed you as well.  Anything Apple can think of Google’s already got it in BETA.  Simple!

        Lol

But can Android get iNorm’s cock hard and your ass greased up?

      • WhatchuTalkinBoutWillis

You just summed up Google’s efforts. BETA. Can’t speak for iOS5 but Siri utilizes natural search technologies that Google has no match for, and to date no interest in. Let’s just wait and see what transpires.

It would be best if integrated right on the lock screen…

anyone else noticed that those are iOS 4 toggles, and not the rounded ones in iOS 5? seems a bit dodgy to me.
