Apple’s OS X Lion downloaded 1 million times on launch day

Apple’s OS X Lion was downloaded more than 1 million times during its first day of availability, Apple said on Thursday. The Cupertino-based company made the announcement just as Microsoft announced its earnings results for the fiscal fourth quarter — merely a coincidence, we’re sure. Presuming these were paid OS X purchases and upgrades, Apple grossed more than $30 million from Lion in just one day. “Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing, in a statement. “Lion is a huge step forward, it’s not only packed with innovative features but it’s incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we’ve ever made.” OS X 10.7 Lion is available now in the Mac App Store for $29.99. Apple’s full press release follows below.

    Go Apple GO!

Well deserved, windows management in Lion feels so amazing and dynamic. I’m stuck with a Windoze 7 machine at work and it feels annoyingly static compared to Lion. You’d think an OS called “Windows” wouldn’t suck so much balls when it comes to, you know, managing windows.

    • Anonymous

How exactly does Win7 windows management suck?

      • sirpaul

It doesn’t, but what do you expect from someone names “winBSODows”?

      • Anonymous

I swear its the same windows troll with about 10 diff accounts. MS is cool and all, but My Gaud! You’d think they’d be paying this man…

Cool story, bro. This isn’t surprising, especially given its price.

Phil Schiller said “user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic”? To be fair, I’m not sure exactly which reviews he was reading. While reviews have been positive, I wouldn’t say that they have been “fantastic”. Every review I’ve read has had nearly as many complaints and headache-inducing items due to Lion as there were positive enhancements. I was hesitant about upgrading from Snow Leopard but I may just for the hell of it and downgrade if I’m not happy

Countdown to the comments from the immature basement-dwellers that flood almost every BGR article (including any involving Apple) in 3… 2…. 1….

      Mossberg was pretty positive.

Most of the time when Apple releases a new OS, it’s best to wait for verion x.x.1 so they can fix the day 1 bugs.

      • http://www.erictate.com/ Eric Tate

As a Mac user for years, I know that is generally the best practice. But I’ve always been impatient.

      • Anonymous

When is a Mossberg review of anything Apple NOT positive?

      • Anonymous

He thought the ipad was not going to do so well. And we know how that turned out.

    • Mac

He is referring to the reviews from actual users on the app store.  Maybe you should get some facts, you retarded cock sucking goo lover.

      • http://www.erictate.com/ Eric Tate

“Industry reaction” isn’t judged by reviews in the App Store. And you lost any sense of credibility at the end anyways. ;)

    • http://www.droiddoes.com/ iNorm

I mean you are pretty fucking dumb. Have u even used it? No. Retard.

      • http://www.erictate.com/ Eric Tate

iNorm!!!!! Just the tool I was expecting!

So let’s see. You are asking me if I even used it and then calling me a retard because I pointed out that I haven’t already. Yet at no point in my original comment do I state anything regarding my own personal opinion of Lion. Thus making your comment completely irrelevant. Either that or you are implying that I misread the article and am somehow stating my opinion. And if that’s the case, then your comment is a result of you misreading mine. Thus making me Kettle, and you Pot. But thanks for chiming in iNorm. Let me know when you finally realize that the only people who care about your comments here are the ones who troll just as much as you do. :-*

Yep, that’s a kissy face. **smooches**

      • http://www.droiddoes.com/ iNorm

You sir were just trolled by the best. Thanks for playing and responding with well over 100 words. My work here is done. Goodnight everyone!

      • sirpaul

Love it. You yourself call Norm a troll, just after writing a lengthy post ‘proving’ your point. You got TROLLD!

    • http://twitter.com/kaydpea chris moore

you’re correct sir, most reviews are pretty reluctant to suggest people install it, for one thing almost every benchmark i’ve done and read about clocks in slower than snow leopard, plus aesthetically it’s ugly.  i have no idea why apple would think people want their apps skinned with leather and wood grain in 2011, huge misfire.  been using lion for a week, and i’m pretty fed up with it, it’s not good, going back to snow leopard tomorrow.  first final cut x, then ios5 now lion, they’re on an ugly rampage lately, pissing everyone off.

  • sirpaul

No OSX Lion review yet, BGR? Today was supposed to be Apple review ay #2 out of 5! tsktsktsk…

  • http://twitter.com/mistercarter7 Mike Gonzalez

i upgraded to Lion and the only annoyance i found thus far, is the new multi-touch gestures… i been using my MacBook pro for 2 years and a half and multitouch gestures on Leopard and Snow Leopard were exactly the same, but now they changed and kinda messed up all of them, it’s gonna take a while for me to get used to it
the rest is pretty nice and it works just as fluid as Snow Leopard

    • Anonymous

definitely had to do some tweeking for in settings to get the gestures more to my tastes.

  • Anonymous

Who wants to give me a size 9 poopchute??

  • Max

    Lion? Screw that! OS 7!!!!

  • Italiankid

Only 1 million?  Windows 7 sold 400 million… Apple has a long way to go to catch up! LOL

    • Anonymous

Yeah I bet it sucks being the most valuable company in the world. Apple is doomed.

      • http://twitter.com/kaydpea chris moore

who gives a fuck about company value unless you’re a stock holder, apple isn’t leading marketshare in any category except ipad, and android just jumped to 30% there last quarter so i’d say those days are extremely limited as well, just proves apple over charges for everything, they sell less and make more…hmm yeah run those numbers.

  • Anonymous

So 90% of all Apple PC were upgraded on the first day. I suppose, this is an accomplishments.

    • Anonymous

Actually people upgraded multiple times. As you may or may not know as a fellow Goofan (aka Apple Hater) Apple customers are into simplicity and thus nowhere near as smart as you and I. So that said, they did multiple upgrades to the same machine. Weird, but that’s Apple fanboys for you!

  • Bringit

Besides an ugly linen sign in screen. And what appears to be a total reversal in touchpad functionality, what else did I spend $30 dollars for?

    • http://twitter.com/kaydpea chris moore

wait till you see your updated calendar, address book, and photo booth buddy, real classy, i’d be mad if i hadn’t stolen it, but i did, and i’m going back to snow leopard, lion is crazy slower at the tasks i use it for. not to mention ridiculously hideous.

    I was expecting more.
