Apple testing Retina displays from LG and Samsung for next iPad

Tablets

Apple has started to test 2048 x 1536 resolution displays from LG and Samsung, both of which have secured deals to provide the iPad maker with LCD parts, Korea Times reported on Monday. “Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 will feature an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide full high definition (HD) viewing experience,” a source told the Korean news outlet. The source refers to the tablet as the “iPad 3″ and not the “iPad HD,” or “iPad Pro” which other rumors have suggested the device will be called. Apple typically uses Samsung displays and flash storage in its devices, but a flurry of recent lawsuits have pushed Apple to pursue different component suppliers. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), for example, will provide flash memory for Apple’s next-generation iPhone and iPad products. One unnamed Samsung senior official commented on Samsung’s relationship with Apple: “We aren’t affected significantly by Apple’s changing approach,” the official told Korea Times. “Apple is first and foremost about product quality, and while it may find other manufacturers to provide customized chips for its new products, the same can’t be said about LCDs.”

doesnt matter apple still relies on samsung they have the BEST parts.  Just eat it man. They depend on them

Samsung is now copying Apple’s Smart Cover.  They’re just calling it the Smart Case.  The colors are exactly the same, the folds are exactly the same.  You’ve gotta be chickenshit to defend that.

      • Anonymous

again..doesnt matter apple still relies on samsung they have the BEST parts.  Just eat it man. They depend on them

Why you taking it so personal….what has Apple done for you? Did they save your grandma from a burning building? DId steve give you a kidney?  They dont know who you are..its all about money man get over it.

      • Anonymous

Apple hasn’t done shit for me.  I did happen to throw away $1200 into Apple stock in 2004.  Then I forgot about it until today.  HOLY SHIT, AAPL!

      • http://twitter.com/cdoruff Collin Doruff

Does it cover the back of the device? Thats all I’d give a damn about. Every ipod I owned got scratched to shit on the back.

        @ steven2k .. steve got him all the makeup .. look @ LouisLouis4 avatar .. lol

seven2k – it’s rather you who takes this personal – and why not!
But let’s get this one straight: Neither Samsung depends on Apple nor does Apple depend on Samsung. But in order for us to have new gadgets, we depend on innovations. Samsung in the past proved that they can – right now they hopped on the train by imitating and not by innovating. I don’t buy fake watches in Chinatown and I sure won’t have any Samsung around me for quite a while. So, yes, I take it personal too.
And don’t believe in your  “BEST parts”, because there are numerous companies succesfully competing in all tech sectors with Samsung.

I dont give up i know where i stand…im unbiased i can easily adapt to anything..one of my strong points i dont RELY one thing….thats what makes me so awesome!

      • Anonymous

That’s why Apple has taken their new processor manufacturing somewhere else? They got issues between each other but Samsung does not have the best parts. Best displays, arguable. Best parts in general not even close.

    • Bringit

that is too much.  not surprising, but the blatant coping is nuts.

      • Anonymous

        yeah..welcome to BGR….Engadget rejects play here! ;)

      • Bringit

Not nice to call yourself a reject.  You must be wanted somewhere.

      • Anonymous

just funny how this turned into macrumors…im cool with being a reject doesnt matter to me I comment on both and havent been runned from any…i do have one thing..i have been one the inside and inner workings. I know it steams you guys that its all about hte money and you guys want to believe that a company is looking out for you..but they are not..its about your $$$ and making you feel that owning a device makes you better.

      • Anonymous

You give up way too easy.  Come on now, put up a fight!

      • http://twitter.com/jj_hh1 J Hamburg

I don’t need my phone manufacturer to be my role model or shoulder to cry on. But I want them to make cool gadgets that are innovative and fun to use. I don’t even mind them to make good money from their products – as i said – as long as they picked their own brains about it, risked their time and money to engineer and innovate. It’s gotta be genuine and then I don’t mind their success at all.
What I dislike is somebody making money from other people’s efforts and then even whine and moan about being accused.

    • Anonymous

Are you saying that Samsung is going to copy iPad LCD screens (produced by Samsung)?

      • Anonymous

        yeah..welcome to BGR….Engadget rejects play here! ;)

      • Anonymous

That would actually explain why their Galaxy S phones are iPhone 3GS ripoffs.  Samsung copied iPhone 3GSs (produced by Samsung)

80+ million iPad 3 displays up for grabs. For every time samsung gets naughty apple will spank em and shift 5 million orders to LG. BAD SAMMY!!! BAD!!!  true story™©®

    • Anonymous

5 million screens * $70 (optimistically) = $350 million. At Samsung’s more than $100 billion annual revenues this is peanuts. Besides, they can always use those screens in Galaxy Tabs.

      • Anonymous

40-80 million screens = 2.8-5.6 billion dollars. I was unaware there was a
demand for 40+ million galaxy tabs per year. Oh wait. There isn’t

  • Anonymous

You need to change the title. At 200+ ppi this screen is not going to have “retina” resolution (whatever that means). I am sure Apple will still use the term though. This BS worked for iPhone why not to repeat this for iPad?

    • Anonymous

Do the math, you blithering ijut.  iPads are held farther from your narrow eyes than the iPhone.  Density doesn’t need to be as high.

      • Anonymous

What, iPad owner arms start growing or something? iPhone and iPad both being touch interface devices, the difference in the eye-to-screen distance is very small. Your arms will kill you if you try “touching” the screen while holding it farther than the comfortable distance (unless you are ready to operate by feet).

work for Apple PR? .. or getting ready for a Job interview @ apple? ..

No one needs to do the math … its a marketing name and it has worked well for Apple.

      • n00btastic

It’s not actually a marketing name. Do your research.  The term “Retina Display” isn’t made up.  I thought the world had moved on past this fact already.  This issue was discussed 1.5 years ago when the iPhone 4 came out and was settled.

      • http://twitter.com/cdoruff Collin Doruff

Thats what I thought, seems like a bad idea to use the retina display. Anything to refresh a product line and sell something new though.

    • Anonymous

retina is the BS steve said to convinced his followers that it was superior to AMOLED because samsung didnt have enough to sell.  AMOLED is way better in color and power saving. Apple uses Samsung and LG displays on almost all there products.  Retina is not that great compared to Samsung display technology. AMOLED give better blacks and colors which is better for pictures and movies which Apple is known and prides itself on doing. Retina is good but Samsung AMOLED technology just gets better.

  • Anonymous

yawwwn… you guys don’t post anything fun anymore… site got so damn boring

  • Spoken Word™

Please stop the FUD, there’s no such thing as a “Retina Display”! It’s a made up term from Apple to try and make their product seem magical.

    • Anonymous

You are so right, calling it that to make it seem magical!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/satya.chowdary99 Satya Chowdary

confirms BGR reports even if someone at apple farts

  • Anonymous

I can’t see how they could get an efficient enough video card to drive that kind of display resolution and maintain battery performance similar to that of the current generation of iPads. If they can do it… bravo. Their competitors can’t even get the same battery life with the current gen.

    • IamEzio

The SGX543MP2 in the iPad 2 already can drive resolution like this with the same preformance as tegra 2 Soc and 1280X800  display .

      • Anonymous

Holy smokes. Gotta be a performance hit though right? I mean, will it still scroll like butter?

  • n00btastic

This is such bullcrap.  You might as well start reporting that Apple is testing Sharks with Lasers.  Apple is all about the painfully slow incremental upgrades.  How do I know? I have 6 apple products and Apple lives to torture us (its faithful customers) then when we do get an upgrade we burst into tears and song as we sing our thanks to the sky.

    • Anonymous

So well said and true!!! True Story°

  • n00btastic

That fart was reported by a pretty solid source (a terd).  It’s all true.

  • Anonymous

This will be the beginning of apple’s products turning to crap. Samsung gave apple the best hardware around and apple knew this. Even Samsung’s Senior officer said competition can’t compete with their lcd’s, so it’s going to be interesting to see this new ipad and iphone.

    • Javier

Apple can always go to Sharp, Panasonic, or LG.

    • Anonymous

“Even Samsung’s Senior officer said competition can’t compete with their lcd’s”
Imagine that – a senior saying his company is the best?

  • Steve Hillshire

Both Samsung and LG should tell these suing bitches that they can suck on some pentile displays!  Everyone knows without Sammy’s displays, the iSeries would be f’d!

  • Anonymous

Why the hell is APPLE using Samsung SCREEN? Didn’t they just sue them for infringement over the NEXUS S? If I was Samsung I would drop all supply chain and not to give any parts to APPLE. The SUPER AMOLED screen have the best resolution next to the Retina screen display. I’d say Samsung just don’t bother giving APPLE your beautiful HIGH RES screen to them if their suing you guys.

    • http://twitter.com/allometry Steve

      How’s that good business though?

There’s a lot of money to be made by Samsung, with it’s parts being purchased by Apple.

Samsung is mostly a supplier of goods, and Apple is a consumer of those goods… A rather large consumer too.

Regardless of the legal battles they have going, it’s not in the favor of either company to cut one another off. Where we may see just dollar signs in front of law suits, the real visualization is territorial control via patents and copyrights.

Samsung wouldn’t benefit by axing Apple. It would be bad business, bad PR and wouldn’t protect the cardinal rule of any public company: protecting the interests of the stakeholder.

    • Anonymous

Just to show you my friend what utter rubbish BGR is posting. One minute Apple is dropping Samsung as their display provider and now you are reading that Apple is using Samsung screens for the next ipad..Shows you how stupid this site is

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com
