AMD says Xbox 720 graphics will be on a par with Avatar

Gaming

According to the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine, AMD’s director of ISV relationships Neal Robison said that the next-generation Xbox will offer graphics that will be on a par with the type of effects viewers saw in the movie Avatar. AMD hasn’t publicly been named as a partner on console, which is currently being dubbed the Xbox 720, but the chip maker did provide the hardware inside the current Xbox 360 system. Avatar-style graphics would certainly be a pretty big leap from the offering currently available on the Xbox 360, and we’re definitely excited to hear more on the new system. We’ll probably have just under one year to find out for sure; we exclusively reported in late June that Microsoft would take the wraps off of its next gaming console during E3 2012 next year.

Sorry AMD, but we haven’t fallen for that bullshit line since Final Fantasy VII. You show us actual gameplay videos of shit that’s comparable to Avatar, and we might believe you.

Until then, the fact that you’re handing out bullshit to anyone and everyone you can see doesn’t mean that we’re just going to blindly take it. Thanks for playing.

Says it is capable. In all honesty, it is plausible considering how powerful tech is getting. It’s just a matter of the game developers putting forth the time and effort to make something that in depth. I mean, look at Elder Scrolls 4. Oblivion was hot stuff back in 2006 when it first came out, and now 5 and a half years later we are due for the release of its sequel. Skyrim looks significantly better and should have much more realistic AI. It’s all about how you program. Once devs get the feel for the new console you can expect something amazing. Until then, expect to get a game that feels like the developers were trying to figure out what they can do.

Not saying I believe it one way or another. Won’t believe anything until I see confirmed specs. But as for now this is just a rumor so… Let’s wait and see.

So… you’re saying that you’re still falling for industry claims made without any proof? I’m a little confused. ;-)

In other news, minimum cost of an AAA title to rise to $200 million.

    • Anonymous

That’s why Xbox and Playstation are going to merge to make it easier for programmers to make games for 1 system. Hopefully, that will mean $50 games. I think $60 for a game is a little to expensive.

  • Sam

Just like the PS2 could render Toy Story graphics in realtime right? Oh, and the PS3 w/ Spider-Man. I remember how excited that got me and I also remember how not true both of those claims turned out to be.

    • Lechero

whether they “can” and whether they “will” are completely different things.

      • Sam

Then why bring it up if nobody can possibly achieve it? And this article says “will” (guess we’ll have to wait and see). I don’t recall the announcements for the PS2 and PS3 but when someone says the Cell Processor is capable of rendering Spider-Man graphics (based on what exactly) and nobody is ever able to pull that out of it, what was that statement but an attempt to hype up the fanbase and increase sales.

That’s what I see it as. If it turns out to be true then great. but I’ve heard this story before, TWICE actually. And it was either a lie both times, or the hardware was just SO advanced that nobody on Earth could pull the most out of it….meanwhile PC games still murdered console games on max settings.

    • KCRic

You do realize most of the graphics have to do with the game developer, not the console…right? Or are you really just that stupid?

Let’s see, Gran Turismo 5 vs. Infamous – which has better graphics? I going with GT5 and so will everyone else. Nothing to do with the console.

      Intelligence or GTFO

      • Sam

Remember the Killzone E3 demo, and then the actual game? Or even Killzone 3? Konami and Naughty Dog (I didn’t mention Guerilla Games) appear to be able to get the very most out of their consoles and they still aren’t even close to the graphical fidelity, or the fluid animations of a CG Spider-Man character. Not to mention the environments.

I would go with GT5 as well. The cars look nice (not CG nice), but I’m talking about the entirety of the game. And that STILL isn’t approaching the CG Spider-Man claim that was made. That’s all that I was referring to.

I was simply implying that there was a bit of hyperbole being thrown out there. I expect the graphics to look good, but Avatar?! I’ll believe it when I see it. And past claims haven’t been backed up by even the BEST developers out there.

    I like AMD’s enthusiasm here, but it’s a bit of marketing mumbo-jumbo.

If you take a look at what the AMD 5800 can do (the card I own), the visual candy produced for a game like Crysis 2 is impressive. Why, I might say on par with Avatar.

Graphics platforms are impressive these days and I don’t fault AMD for touting how bad ass it is, but this isn’t anything new. What I would rather hear, and maybe it’s just me is, “we’ve created a card that only uses 100W and is cool to the touch and produces graphics like in the movie, ‘Avatar’.”

720, seriously? Why not just skip to the 1260?

    • sirpaul

You’re going to dismiss the whole point of the article and start complaining about a name that hasn’t even been confirmed yet? Wow.

If you’re going to make fun of product names, I know a company that named their tablet an “iPad”. Go make fun of that on every iPad post, mkay?

      • Anonymous

Why did you bother trolling my comment? I realize the name hasn’t been confirmed yet, but someone came up with it, did they not? It was bad enough when they came out with 360 because 2 sounded inferior to Playstation 3, but now we’re going to skip 540 and go straight for 720, and my light hearted comment about it draws the ire of an apparent apple-hater? Dear god, man, I didnt even say anything negative about Microsoft or its next gen console. Chillax a little. Drink a beer and a Valium, or better yet, go get some sunshine.

You raise a good point, 720 might mislead consumers to think it’s lower res than previous versions. ;)

    • Jcray

the Xbox would be too dizzy from spinning around if it were 1260, duh.

  • Socom0120

how abouuuut we stick with the ps3 and 360 for a few more years and call it a day? do we really need a 720. jeez. its always so dumb when new console talk arrives

    • Anonymous

As far as I know, Xbox 360 doesn’t support blu-ray playback.  Maybe that’s a reason for them pushing a new console out.

On a personal note, I have both and I’ve always felt the OS on PS3 was always a lot snappier than on 360.

      • Socom0120

i know like 3 people who use blu-ray enough to want it integrated into their consoles. and then again theres still the ps3. i have both too. and i use them both for different things. and yes the ps3 os is alot snappier than the 360. but i like my ps3 and my 360 just the way they are for what they do. but its foolish of me to wish for the same consoles for a few more years. we all know pushing out slight variations of the same product is a game everyone plays. inlcuding microsoft.

      • Joshua Rawlings

You think their pushing a new console out because of BLU-RAY???

You were so desperate to get a laugh that you just showed off how bad your reading comprehension skills are.  I said that maybe blu-ray is A reason for them pushing a new console out.  As in one reason among others.  I never said that they’re pushing a new console out because of blu-ray.  Oh well…you’re already dead.  We’re probably better off not having to read your comments any longer.

      • Jcray

Correct me if I’m wrong but wouldn’t they need to get that licensed from Sony, makers of PlayStation?

lol… the highest end gaming PCs can’t even do that now let along a console system that will release in 2012/13 for $400-500.

Sorry AMD but you’re FOS on this one.

Hell many of the highest end movie productions don’t even do that and their budgets are far higher than anyone’s next gaming console.

That’s because most PC games are ported console games not optimized for PC hardware. Fail.

All I have to say is BGR didn’t exclusively report on the new Xbox being unveiled in e3 2012. In fact they were 10-13 days later than other sites. Bgr quality isn’t the same as it used to be.
