Microsoft spills beans on new ‘Tulalip’ social network

General

Microsoft accidentally spilled the beans on a new social network it has been working on called “Tulalip.” According to VentureBeat, a splash page for the the social network appeared shortly on Socl.com on Thursday before it was immediately taken down. In an effort to conceal its mistake, Microsoft issued a statement. “Thanks for stopping by. Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the web. We didn’t mean to, honest,” Microsoft said. It’s unclear if Tulalip is a legitimate social network or if it really is just an “internal design project,” but given the similarities between Tulalip’s user interface and the tiles found in Windows 8 and Windows Phone, it would certainly be a nice fit.

So why buy a stake in facebook if your going to start a social network of your own?

to play nice with FB, and not become the sausage fest that is g+

      • Anonymous

Give g+ time, it is brand new.  It will eventually grab some traction and the masses will start to flock to it.

Plus, do your part and invite girls, those girls when then invite other girls and so on and so forth.  Just list when you throw a party, you make sure to invite girls with a lot of friends.

Your reply is a classic example of why Google+ will *remain* a sausage fest and you probably don’t even see why.

Prof. Peabody, how is it a classic reply?  The fact remains that Google+ is brand new and up until about last week, it was really exclusive, it just need time.  Sure, it may be a “sausage fest” right now, but that is only because the techies were the ones that knew about it and got accounts right away.  It is Google, everyone knows them.  How many non-techies do you know that say to “google it” when referencing searching the web (no matter what search engine they use).  As word spreads and as people with Google+ accounts keep inviting their friends, it should eventually even out.  The first person I invited was my wife, she has since invited a few of her friends that are girls.  It just seems to be how girls work and why I made the crack about inviting girls.  It will be a cascade effect, it just needs time.

Microsoft already has a social network called windows live.

    • sirpaul

Because they can still make money off that too, although Tulalip isn’t even really a competitor. It’s kind of how MS also has a large share of Apple.

To get a base model for your social networking project and possibly jump on to the highly successful project by zuckerberg

  • Lazaro Casanova

I mean by the looks of the picture….your only options to sign in are either with facebook or twitter. It would seem they aren’t really trying to compete.

    • BurleyShells

“Sign in to begin” above the welcome

  • Anonymous

It’s a social search tool to compete with Google’s social search…. not a new social network. Hence the Facebook and Twitter logins. It’s been reported by others and I believe Microsoft also said so.

  • Lechero

all these damn social sites, just more spamming. maybe we should bring back the “Hi. a/s/l ?” too

  • http://www.facebook.com/brentschmidt Brent Schmidt

    Tulalip eh? More like, TulaLATE.

  • http://twitter.com/thecoolestdrew Andrew Coyle

“Find” and “Share” are not proper nouns, Microsoft.

    • AnonGuy

      Its for emphasis, idiot.

  • Prof. Peabody

Everything Microsoft makes looks like a Powerpoint.  Tiles and squares flipping around, things sliding off screen right and left …

It’s as if they believe that all the transitions and animations in OS-X are just window dressing and don’t actually do anything functional, so let’s copy them by throwing in a bunch of random sliding bits and … Voila! done.

These so-called social networking sites are nothing but marketing tools. When are people going to wisen up?  Companies use the info you give them (whether you want to or not and whether you KNOW they’re doing it or not) to peg you demographically and then market to you.  And the idiots that create these sites are making a killing from these companies paying for the ability to slip in and get all this user info.  Ever go on one of these sites and get harassed because you won’t tell your life story or post a ton of pics or make your profile open to the world or give them private info?  Now you know why and now you know why I told F**book to take my account and shove it.

    What a horrible name. It’s a borderline tongue-twister.

    • jay_max

It’s a Native American name of a tribe in the Seattle area.  Get the frack over it.

  • Anonymous

It’s always hilarious when these companies will drop a sneak peak or preview on the web to get folks talking…and then take it down quickly and act like it was a mistake

This is the same as when women will post a provocative picture of them on facebook sandwiched between 20 conservative ones

We’re smarter than you, Microsoft! Quit fishin’…

Real mature – just remove any posts you don’t like or that hit a little too close to home with the truth.  What do I care?  I’m off those damn sites and I really don’t care if anyone else gets jerked around and spammed.  The intelligent people like myself already know not to get involved with those marketing sites like F***book and Tweet.  You aren’t gonna make any money off of us.  Who cares if the losers can’t see the forest for the trees.

    • sirpaul

Tweet? You mean Twitter? Kind of like when the Jonas bros called Twitter “Twatter”…lol.

  • jldmower

This is just another tool for the Elites (yes, Bill Gates is one of the Elites) and Government to use to keep the Sheeple “dumbed down”, completely distracted, and entirely ignorant to what is really happening to our lives and freedoms.  Who needs more government control and influences?  Open your eyes and think about it!

  • sirpaul

Good to see it is social search and not another social network. FB and Google+ are enough for now – with social networks you can’t really have a ‘piece of the pie’ as people use the network that majority of people use. It’s not 80% go here, 15% there and the rest over there. It’s mostly 95% in one spot, with maybe more having more than 1 place they regularily check.

The only time you see massive differences in social network usage is when looking at different countries. For example, up until last year Romania and most of Europe was all about hi5. Only recently have people started flocking to Facebook.

Nobody “accidentally leaks” anything these days. It’s the new form of advertising. And to suggest that it was leaked is just plain ignorance.

    Tulalip?

    Tulip?

    Tulipan lip?

What the hell is wrong with marketing people in the USA?!

  • Anonymous

more ugly tiles and excessive annoying transitions.

Tulalip? It’s the name of an Indian reservation near Seattle where losers piss their money away in a second rate casino.

    • chuck

^ Thanks for sharing that. If it matters to anyone, it’s pronounced “too-lay-lip”.

Microsoft strikes again, “Tulalip?”  Really?  Why not “ShoShoDip” or “BoxyVoody?”

I mean, come on, who taught these guys how to name stuff, Kevin J. Anderson?

death to all fucking social networks… shit… how many does one need?

  • 1jaxstate1

Good lord, someone should create one social network, to rule them all!

  • http://about.me/davidlnguyen David Nguyen

When I think of Microsoft, I think of work computers, not joining a social network created by them. Windows 7 is nice though along with their new Phones. Windows 7 I have by default because it’s the newest Microsoft OS (have a Mac too for non gaming purposes) but they are a bit late to the Smartphone market. I even liked their Zune players but their marketshare died once Apple created a whole app ecosystem for their devices. What I will say is that their gaming division is doing a fantastic job though. Love my Xbox, the XBLA games and even the Kinect.

In its statement, Microsoft lost me at  ”(blahblahblah)…, honest!”.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

Microsoft just follows or buys out, instead of innovation.  It then uses its powerful lobby to strike corporate deals to crush small opponents.  This time on it will not be easy against all mighty Facebook and upcoming G+.
