Nintendo DS outsold 3DS two-to-one in June

3D

According to new figures released by Nintendo on Friday, the company sold twice as many Nintendo DS gaming consoles as it did newer Nintendo 3DS devices. The Japanese firm revealed that it sold 386,000 Nintendo DS systems as opposed to just 143,000 3DS units in June, according to MSNBC. It’s likely that the popularity of the DS can be attributed to its lower price point, but the small pool of 3D games could also be hurting 3DS sales; game publishers have yet to release some of the most anticipated 3D titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3D. The gaming industry hasn’t jumped for the device as much as Nintendo had hoped, either. Although Nintendo said that it moved 400,000 units during its first week of U.S. availability, the firm also said overall sales were weaker than expected.

I do not know if the 3ds offers anything more in the way of processing power that the ds doesn’t. That said, if the biggest difference people know about it is the 3D effect than this statistic shouldn’t be a surprise. 3D in movies has lost a lot of it’s luster so the video games were it never was a force should be just wimpering along. Besides, from my own experience with the device, the 3d only works if you keep the screen in the right position and NEVER move it. That isn’t exactly a good selling feature.

I completely agree… 3D is a gimmick that needs to die ASAP! People get hyped up over “glassesless” 3D but don’t realize that it only works at a certain distance and requires constant tuning if you move around…

Why is the a picture of the ds lite?

Who over the age of 12 cares or even knows what a DS Lite looks like?

Considering the DS is only ever so slightly behind the PS2 in the highest selling game console or handheld of all time category thanks in large part to cross generational appeal, quite a few people.

I believe Zelda 3D is out. And the 3D effect isn’t that great. Had to look at it just right. I’ll stick to playing on my big screen in HD.

I was shocked by the battery life. How do you go from double digit battery life in the DS line to like 3-4hrs with the 3DS? How is that acceptable? Reminds me of the days of the Game Gear when I basically had to play with it plugged into the wall.

The 3DS is just an excuse from the big N to say “hey, this is the next-gen portable game console”.
There’s nothing really awesome on the 3DS to justify the upgrade from the DS.
The switch from GBA to DS was good, but from DS to 3DS, not so good.

Plus, the game library available for 3DS is weak, and mostly it has some taste of just-for-kids. Same stuff over and over and over: Mario, Zelda… remake of Zelda and reboot of Mario.. whatever!!

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

There are a couple of factors conflating the underwhelming performance of the 3DS.

    1) Consumer confusion about the differences between 3DS and the preexisting DS. Many people think it is just an update in the same way a DSi was an update to the DSLite when it is in fact an entirely new platform.

    2) For most people who aren’t hardcore gamers, there are compelling alternatives to a dedicated gaming handheld in the form of PMP’s like an iPod Touch or even a smart phone which offers a much wider variety of entertainment and functions than a dedicated portable game console. Why would a parent buy their child a 3DS when they can buy them an iPod Touch at a comparable price point and arguably get more for their money?

    3) The 3DS launched in March (an off-peak time for the video game industry) with a small software library at a prohibitive price point in a weak economy. Some might be waiting for more games to become available on the console, some might be waiting for the holidays to make a purchase, some might be happy with the cheaper DS.

    4) Lastly, to follow up on the last point, the 3DS just isn’t that compelling a gaming experience. “Glasses-free 3D” is it’s main selling point and from an objective standpoint, it isn’t enough of a reason to buy a console. The demand for “3D” (on a portable console for that matter) isn’t that great.

I don’t think any one of these reasons are the sole reason the 3DS is performing poorly, the answer lies somewhere between a mix of these points. Take into consideration that with the relatively recent mainstream adoption of smart phones, most people probably don’t see a need to own a portable game console. I know for me, personally, my playing time on the DS went down significantly as I got more accustomed to doing more on my phone besides just making phone calls.

Definitely a price issue and lack of games.  Is the 3D (as good or bad as you think it is) really worth the price difference when DS is great in itself.  What features could it carry for us to pay these prices?  (times are getting tighter so I think Nintendo really need to think about this).
