Google: Android activations up to 550,000 per day

mobile

Google’s Android activations aren’t slowing down anytime soon. The search giant announced in its second-quarter earnings report yesterday that there are now 550,000 Android smartphones activated each day. That’s a massive figure, and it’s up from June when Google’s Andy Rubin revealed that his company was activating a half a million devices daily. Rubin also noted in June that activations were growing at a rate of 4.4% week over week. If that growth isn’t stunning enough, get this: just two months ago Google said that it was activating 400,000 devices each day and that there were 100 million Android devices in use worldwide. That number is now up to about 130 million and going by Google’s newly revealed stats, it sounds like 200 million devices isn’t that far out of reach.

      that’s horrible

  • Anonymous

So Google is “activating” 550K devices a day, yet the iPhone generates more revenue and profit than Google’s entire business, and Amazon is about to use Android’s “openness” to beat Google over the head. Yay for Google!

    • Anonymous

Because android is a open source platform. They’re not there to make money off the operating system. They never said they were.

Everything is to cater to their main business – Advertising.

Although android is very profitable, it will never be as profitable as a closed system which isn’t licensed.

      • Anonymous

All Prespectively talks about is revenue it seems.

      • Anonymous

He’s an idiot fanboy trying to troll and failing at that.

      • Anonymous

And Apple’s iPhone generates more revenue and profit than the entire business of Google does. Period. No matter which way you cut it Google sucks at making money.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, $9 billion in 4 months. What’s wrong with them? Why can’t they make any money?

      • dumbass

        what? lol.

    • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

Well yeah, seeing as Apple makes money from iPhone sales plus app, music, video, and ringtone purchases while Google makes nothing from Android device sells.  All the make is money from licensing fees to use Google Apps (Gmail, Maps, etc), ad revenue, and app purchases.

      • Anonymous

No, they make money from selling the eyeballs of its users. That’s the whole point of Android.

        Advertising.

      • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

Right but they do charge licensing fees for their apps as well as take a cut from app sales. I know the majority of it is advertising, duh. :)

Probably because ANDROID IS AN OS YOU FUCKING TWAT. Google only makes a portion of the profits from each android phone since they don’t make the hardware.

  • Scott Edwards

Why don’t they ever announce “sold” rather than “activations”

    • Anonymous

Because activations is the number that matters. What’s the point if the device is sitting in some warehouse?

Sold will be a higher number since it will count refurbished devices twice.

      • Henry Earl

If a device is “sold” that means its in someone’s hands and not in a warehouse.
Activations are an inflated number. Technically speaking, if itake the sim out of an iphone, restore it, then put the sim back in, thats an activation.
If they are activating 550k a day, that would mean something in te area of 14-15 million a month. I dont recall any manufacturers stating that they were anywhere close to selling that many units that fast. Again, inflated numbers.

      • Anonymous

Wrong. The activation is done by the unique serial number found on each phone.. Please do some research before you make false claims.

14-15 million a month is perfectly reasonable. Don’t be naive. Google sells android in over 200 countries.

Go google the market share in asian countries. For example: google has over 70% market share in south korea.

Because android is open source, most manufacturers are using the operating system worldwide in the home language.

      • Anonymous

As long as you believe Google. Because they never lie.

    • Anonymous

What you’re talking about is Android devices “shipped” vs. Android devices “sold”. This article, however, doesn’t say anything about devices “shipped”.

      Oh, you’re also proving you’re a moron.

      • Anonymous

The argument is that by using anything but the word “sold” (and you know Google could get this data), it seems fishy. Why not just say how many were actually sold?

Using a poorly defined term with only Google to vouch for it is akin to saying “shipped”; it could be = to sales, or it could be =/=.

    Android rules.

How many devices were SOLD versus how many were activated?

    • Anonymous

A lot more are sold. But no official number.

      • Anonymous

Or a lot less. We don’t know.

        Unless you trust Google implicitly.

It’s not about trust. It’s common sense.

I read this, and thought that I would share this with you:

It’s easy to see why RIM will be the dominant Smartphone
    player in the east.

Apple is an American company; Apple pays taxes to the American
government. The government uses that money to purchase weapons and missiles, to
use against the people of the east.

Android is software made by Google. Google is an American
company; Google pays taxes to the American government. The government uses that
money to purchase weapons and missiles, to use against the people of the east.

Nokia and Microsoft together. Microsoft is an American
company; Microsoft pays taxes to the American government. The government uses
that money to purchase weapons and missiles, to use against the people of the
    east.

RIM is a Canadian company. Canadians love everyone.

Nokia use to do very well out east. But now that they have
joined an American company, it’s an entire new ball game.

    • Anonymous

Oh, good. You’ve turned an unrelated article into a chance to villify the United States.

Here’s a newsflash: the U.S. government puts a lot more thought into war, missiles, and the East than the U.S. citizens ever did. Do you want proof? The Canadian company you mentioned is getting its butt handed to it by a bunch of American companies. Go away.

      • RipVanWinkle

This all won’t matter August 2nd when the US defaults on their loan taking down the entire world economy with it.

      • Anonymous

It’s the secret weapon that very few people know about !

    • Anonymous

Only that RIM is gonna get their assess kicked because they won’t let the governments monitor everything their users are doing.

      • Anonymous

Oh no ….. they need to get duplicate keys from the carriers if they wish to monitor it real time. It’s like cloning a BB. 1 message gets sent to 2 different places.

    • Anonymous

Nuke the east. Kill em all and let the coroner sort em out. 

That would mean that WallyMart can no longer exist because they would have no more warez to sell. Where then will you shop.

Android can have 1 million activations a day and it still sucks.

  • http://www.sk1wbw.wordpress.com Wayne Williams

Activates or sells?  Is there a difference?  Over a year period, that would be over two hundred million handsets. Aren’t there only a finite amount of people that buy cell phones?  I don’t think everyone buying a cell phone is buying an Android, are they?

    • Anonymous

Well all the poor people are yes

      • http://twitter.com/5murfette Mr Smurf

Yeah and upper-class people like us have to separate from that group by buying expensive apple devices. We are not cheap-shits, and people around us will know it.

  • http://twitter.com/HABOTN HABOTN

I really like Android, but this number seems misleading.

We’re talking about 3.5 million activations each week? How many of those activations are Android people activating updated Android equipment?

I read these to mean: WE’RE TAKING OVER THE WORLD.

Which, clearly, is inaccurate. It’s a big world littered with smart people … and dumb people.

  • Anonymous

Man how many poor people are there in the world for them to all be activating these piss-poor android devices every day.

  • Anonymous

Same stuff, different day.  Android keeps growing, apple fans stick to their guns that Apple makes more money…LOL
    Ok…

    • http://twitter.com/cdoruff Collin Doruff

Who cares about how much money one company makes to a consumer that wants a product? id rather pay less for a good phone.

  • Jtkrpm

Android also has the highest return rates don’t they? So how many of those activations were returned?

    • http://twitter.com/trick202 Rich Fletcher

      Do they? Link?

The apple fanboys will wet themselves panicing over this one lol….

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

  • Anonymous

And now lets watch the iPhonies talk in circular arguments while they try to rationalize how this means Google is doomed and how they think this really means iPhone is on top…all while secretly wetting themselves.
