Sprint to reveal 4G LTE network plans later this month, report claims

General

Later this month, Sprint will formally announce its plans to bring 4G LTE service to its subscribers via a network-sharing deal with Virginia-based LightSquared, CNET reports. The move, seen as inevitable by some, was outed last month when LightSquared owner Philip Falcone revealed the deal in a letter to Harbinger Capital Partners investors. “Sprint will become a significant customer of LightSquared’s 4G LTE network,” Falcone stated in the letter. The deal, which could be worth as much as $20 billion over the next 15 years according to an earlier report, will let Sprint’s U.S. network be used as the backbone for LightSquared’s 4G LTE buildout. CNET says the deal will be revealed on July 28th when Sprint reports its earnings for the June quarter.

Correct me if I’m wrong but even if Sprint switches to LTE, wouldn’t their in-building coverage still suck ass??

    • Chunkxd-9

Their network modernization project should fix that.

      Yeah still wrong jack ass

that’s what your mom said when she gave birth to you.

ok so i take it you are enjoying your capped lte with your single-core android device running outdated software (all verizon LTE android phones are single-core and/or are running old software)…. or you are on att and enjoying fake 4G (“with enhanced backhaul… where available”), capped data,  with outdated android software….

        with sprint
        i get no data caps
Android options with Up-To-Date software and Hardware
and i pay less then you

i guess i get the last laugh….. lol

      GOODBYE UNLIMITED DATA

      • Anonymous

when the network modernization is over sprint will have the large most efficient network in america. the game changer though is that it will be software upgradeable at that point rather then the hardware upgrades currently required for all networks today.

Unlimited will stay and will cost sprint less to run then it cost vz and att to run with caps

    • Anonymous

No.  The 800MHz should be fixing that.  But I have no idea where you are, cause no matter where I am I have great coverage indoors.

    • Jayq330

They’ll be using the frequencies from the iden network which is 800 mgz with 18 mgz up & 18 mgz down It’s being used for voices also, Wimax is still going to be used so there new “vision network” will be America’s first multi mode network. This means downloads at constant peak rates & better reception worth volts voice. Also they’ll have the 2.5 to 2.6 ghz LTE from the deal they have with some other LTE network. So they will have the most signal everywhere with faster data than any network.don’t believe me Google up Sprint vision multi mode network & find out for yourself.

    • Anonymous

LTE would be built on 800/1900/2100 bands…. great in-building coverage plus capacity and speed…

  • Anonymous

While I am happy to see that Sprint will be moving towards LTE, I cannot imagine this switch going well for the.  Right now they already are trying to manage 3 networks (iDEN, CDMA and Wi-Max) and now they are going to try to integrate a 4th?

    • Nyynke98

No, their network modernization project will eliminate the multiple networks yet still house the multiple spectrums they hold, allowing for devices to select the best spectrum for the area the phone is in

      • DREW J

oh yea thatll work just put a cdma, iden, wimax, and lte antenna in all of their phones so it can decide which one to use.. sprint will be out of business in a few years .. they dont even own there own towers they had to sell them to stay afloat..

      • Js1979

What does owning assets have to do with remaining in business?  It is my estimation that owning towers is probably a pretty hefty expense (depreciation and maintenance), so leasing the towers is probably a much more cost effective method of providing their service.  Also, Sprint would get bought before it would go out of business.

      • DREW J

yea your right none of the other companies own their own towers, thats just stupid..thats called a panic move.. something they had to do because they were losing too much money..and if they get bought out by verizon or one of their prepaid brands then either way sprint is gone.. itll happen..

      • Macmaster9600

That is not true. The sale was of the management portion only. Sprint still owns all switches/towers/wires etc. I know because I was one of the employees affected by the sale. Sprint hired Ericsson to manage their network and inprove efficency for them. Ownership still remains with sprint.

      • DREW J

for a know it all you didnt mention tower co. in there at all ..

This is an interesting strategy on your part.  Make a dumbass comment, be corrected, make another dumb ass comment, be corrected again, yet instead of realizing you might be wrong, continie to make dumb ass comments.  If it were me, a person who corrected my ignorance with facts learned first hand would end my ignorance, but God bless you, its not going to stop you.

        Bold move Cotton, bold move.

      • DREW J

why is it a dumbass comment ? because you think your right so im wrong..
your a typical douche bag who thinks he knows everything because you read
alot of shit on the internet ..i work for gigantic company who is partnered
with sprint. so take your facts you think you know and shov them up your
vagina.. and speaking of corrections the line your tool bag ass line was
looking for is ” its a bold move cotton lets see if it pays off” not
whatever concoction of a mess of lines you just made right there.. tool

The advantage they have is that,Motorola,Sony/Ericsson,Samsung & lucent tech are always at an auction trying to be Sprint exclusive tower service & technicians @ completing prices all while offering more advanced technology every year to earn sprint’s contract that earns them more than 30 billion $ every 5 years so its a bid that fight for & Sprint always comes out winning, because after the 5 year contact is ending 1 of the 5 companies might have a technology beyond LTE & Sprint can just motive on to the new towers with better tech @ the drop of a dime. And we Sprint users reap the benefits. Just like the 21% extra Wimax coverage that Sprint got in NewYork without spending a dime. So basically It’s like leading a car & getting a new one entry year. Get it now little Verizon boy? Go give them your $ for over priced mbs!

      • DREW J

lol ok.. your a tad bit sprint biased there.. i wonder why? and secondly i dont have verizon. i hate cdma carriers and wouldnt give them my money. enjoy sprint and your horrible customer service and no coverage anywhere.. also enjoy your great new wimax service which clear owns which on a day to day basis is slower than tmobiles hspa+ (a 3g technology)

      • Jayq330

        * basically It’s like leasing a car & changing it for the years model. Swype it’s a messing up a lot of my word’s & sentences but I hope you guys could understand.
“technicians @ competing prices all while offering more advanced”, “30 billion $ every 5 years so its a bid that *they have to fight for & Sprint always comes out winning”

Yeah…. will be fun to have all radio’s on and let the phone pick the one with best reception lol

iDEN is scheduled to be phased out.

      • DREW J

idens been scheduled to phased out for 5 years now..

      • Anonymous

actually it began a few months ago… they have already began offering iden users cdma devices at no cost

      • DREW J

thats weird that they just signed a 3 year contract extension for iden 7 months ago.. its not going anywhere anytime soon.. learn facts please

      • Anonymous

actually the iden phase out was always a 3 year plan. sprint is doing a “natural migration” rather then force them off the network… that’s called taking care of customers…

so… do some MORE research :)

      • DREW J

oh and for the record.. sprint was doing a 5 year phase out iden plan in
2003 when i worked for them.. look how that went.. like i previously
stated.. iden isnt going anywhere .. my first clue was when the US
government said in 2005 they had 1 year to get off of that frequency and
        they have yet to move..

      • Jayq330

They’re going to phase out starting this month ad anyone can see the evo3D is the first phone to use the SMR bandwidth & will be shared with ptt until the end of this year. If they’re was a 7 year contact then it’s nullified. It’ll soon be Sprint voLTE & data service. Anyone remember how quick the PTT would connect even on concrete buildings? Reception will be equal to Verizon’s & LTE also. But we’ll have faster data & ping! Thank god we’ll have all that bandwidth cause all the Verizon& at&t custies are going to flock to Sprint!

      • Anonymous

        Right….Stop, dude, just stop.

    • Anonymous

rather than run four separate networks sprint will be using a single hybrid tower that will run CDMA/WIMAX/LTE on all three frequencies… 800/1900/2100.

sprint will not run a single technology on a single frequency… it will run all 3 technologies on all three frequencies… so lte will run on 800/1900/2100 this is a game changer!
      :)

      • Jayq330

That’s so crazy, Dan’s taking care of business :)

  • Anonymous

Its about time…..the two tin cans kept breaking the string and I’m not gonna pay that deductible to fix it anymore…….

  • Anonymous

How many different networks do they need to run?!

    • Anonymous

their going to be more than likely be running one. i think sprint will be running a TD-LTE network, which is best for the spectrum they hold.

      • Anonymous

Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology. Each radio is panel+embedded software.

No more hardware. Lower cost. Read up on their multi-mode next generation technology.

    • Anonymous

they will not run different networks… they will run one very efficient hybrid network

  • Anonymous

They knew WiMAX wasn’t going to get them anywhere. What spectrum does LightSquared use?

    • dan heese isn’t the man

WHAT? My EVO/3d will be only wi-max? Does that mean Sprint isn’t expanding on their wi-max coverage? It doesn’t work in the city I’m in. I pay extra for it & it still hasn’t shown up!

      • Anonymous

You’re not paying for WiMax, you’re paying the fee to have unlimited data rather than be throttled or given a bucket like all the other carriers out there.

      • dan heese vs captain bringdown

‘m paying an extra $10 dollars for a service that doesn’t exist in my area today. By the tone of this article, doesn’t look like it’s gonna be rolling out tomorrow. Of course I was told differently when I upgraded so if you want to credit the difference since you work sound like you work for SPRINT I will thank you in advance. Don’t want a phone that will be obsolete and murder’s my battery after 6 hours on 3g.
….Man, & I thought you where a green canadian this whole time. IT’S COOL

      • Anonymous

Sprint won’t start selling LTE phones until late 2012.

      • Anonymous

my guess is summer 2012… but they wont “charge” you $300 for them ethier

    • Jayq330

2.5. Ghz & 2.6 ghz for LTE, they’ll also be using iden’s 800 mgz spectrum for voLTE & building penetrating LTE. So they’ll have different frequencies used to make sure you get the best speeds no matter where you’re at. They’re even going to continue using Wimax, this is actually going to save them more money with multi mode towers & energy use which means process will moist likely stay the sane for Sprint users with better service. I can’t wait.

    • Anonymous

wimax isnt going away… it provides capacity…. lte will run on all sprint frequencies… the idea is to provide lte at a bigger footprint then is currently available for 3g

    • Jayq330

I wonder if they used the “wimax tower” build out as a conver up for an LTE tower build out, that could be the reason that Verizon was crying to the government about allowing Sprint to build there Wimax towers, how it wasn’t fair because LTE wasn’t ready.message Sprint knew all they’d have to do was Flick the switch & wallah! Instant LTE all owner before anyone knew what hit them. But i don’t think that was the case.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com
