RIM said to be prepping Apple TV competitor for fall launch

General

Research In Motion is currently working on a media box codenamed “BlackBerry Cyclone” that will launch later this fall, BlackBerry news site NerdBerry.net reports. The rumored media hub is said to be similar to Apple’s iOS-based Apple TV box, which connects to a television and plays streaming video content from iTunes. The BlackBerry Cyclone’s purported capabilities include Netflix streaming, YouTube streaming and streaming from media devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The unit will also reportedly feature an HDMI-out port. The move would be a peculiar one from RIM, as it does not have an iTunes competitor to speak of and even with the extremely popular multimedia market, the Apple TV has not been an overly successful device for Apple. The Cupertino-based company announced the million-unit milestone for its refreshed Apple TV late last year, but we haven’t heard much about it since that time. RIM is also in the midst of prepping its first QNX-powered smartphone for release in 2012, not to mention seven BlackBerry handsets due to launch later this year, so we would hope the bulk of its attention is focused on these infinitely more important products.

Come on RIM……let it go.  You lost the battle with smartphones when you had a commanding lead, you own executive board hates you, and you’re Canadian.  Just close up shop and move on!

That’s what Michael Dell said to Apple…

    • RipVanWinkle

All of this won’t matter anymore once the US economic death spiral drags the entire world economy down the tube along with it.

  • Rockin’

RIM is a little late to the game.  This product is already on the market..Western Digital makes WD TV Live and WD TV Live Hub.  Pretty much the same feature set and a killer user interface…oh yeah, plus you get 1 TB for storage on the WD TV Live Hub.

    Hahahahaha, oh RIM.

What crazy shit won’t you do.

Next week: “RIM to launch new QNX-powered dishwasher”

      • RipVanWinkle

Hilarious. And toasters too! That would mean that QNX is found in everything. Military warez, automobiles, nuclear power plants, medical equipment and your mom’s dishwasher.

This box should give your playbook virtual wireless connection to your playbook/smartphone to your TV, no more hdmi to tv connection?  qnx is designed for easy portability to other devices, now that the core os is done it should be much easier to roll out products and start harnessing the power of this os to other products.  Doubt the old bb os could have done this easily.  Why not try something different and see where it goes?

    Apple TV is pretty bad.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

    AKA “fiddling while Waterloo burns”

If these guys manage to get this thing out the door before August 2nd, they may manage to sell a couple. After that, no one is buying anything from anyone. LOLZ

Wouldn’t that be a “fall failing”??

So let me get this straight: RIM fails at phones and instead of trying to repair their rundown image they are trying to compete with GOD?

    BWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!

In short: RIM needs to focus on growing their smartphone audience and business. Google and nearly everyone else has struggled in this category, and it’s debatable is even the AppleTV is a “success” despite being the leader. RIM desperately wishes to be a strong consumer player, but they’re alienating a core audience that already loves them. I’m not sure if this rumor is true, but I hope not.

They need to trim their product lines to high quality, desirable devices in the smartphone and tablet space for business customers. Then they can expand.

I am with them on this one.  While this may not take off in the US immediately, with Netflix expanding overseas to places like Latin America where BlackBerry is also immensely popular, they can add to their earnings in those markets by providing this service to elite consumers.  QNX is already appearing to be a big arsenal that would help them with convergence and connection of smart devices.

Should be interesting to see how that all works out. Wow.

For a second there I thought it said “fail launch” instead of “fall launch”……..

Really?  You don’t say…   this might be legit…

I WISH RIM WOULD FIRST FOCUS ON WHAT MADE THEM THE COMPANY THEY ARE TODAY & THATS THE BLACKBERRY. WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU TRY TO GET INTO THE TV BUSINESS? CAN WE EVEN PUT SOME MORE ATTENTION TO THE PLAYBOOK? SMH

Media Box to compete with Apple TV? Why not. It is the year of the COPYCATS!

rofl, oh rim, why fizzle out when you can go out with a bang

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6JUK2RDOPHCULTIFWTNRVQ4PYQ JonathanW

Dude, really!? Stop putting out bull sh*t and focus on your phones! How about focusing on one or possibly two phones instead of 4 or 5. Get one quality phone with the qnx os and go from there. Apple spends all of there energy on one phone and maybe RIM should do the same. I am pulling for RIM but this is “idea” is too much, besides no one uses apple tv anyways, except Jonathan Geller. Apple failed with this “idea” and RIM will too.

    Ugh.

    WHY ???????????

We want Dual Core + QNX , not this junk

  • Jessclaridad

Research in Motion is RIM. Now I know 

interesting they can not stabilize their phone OS, they can not release a new phone on time. but they have time for Tablets and now a AppleTV competitor.  Interesting.  BB is losing me more each day, My trust is going quickly.  I have been waiting for the 9900, but I may reevaluate that decision on this news.

The monumental cluelesness of RIMM’s management is baffling and wondrous to behold. Even Apple called Apple TV a hobby, admitting that it doesn;t have much comemrcial potential- and they have iTunes! Apple is upgrading to a full-scale IP TV, and RIMM is busy fighting the last war. Strategy by imitation: always painful to watch.

Not quite peculiar once you realize a couple of things:

    1) when appworld came out they were already in the midst of working on an “Appworld” for tv shows and music but it became bogged down with all of the licensing crap. This would probably be the “hook” down the road.

    2) again delays due to legal haggling, corporate in-fighting, poor software development (appworld is a medium sized clustered environment which the developers themselves barely grasp on how to code for it).

    3) weak vision being that they should be able to change paths quickly once they see that the market just isn’t there (unless there is something else coming down the pipe). Again poor leadership.

They have huge potential still but they need some visionary blood and not those from dinosaurs like ATT.

EVERYONE wants to be like apple.  true story ™©®

All the comments on this blog are exactly why the people that say them don’t run big giant companies that make millions of dollars ever year. You have no forethought or fore site. All you can see is what is in front of you, unless someone spells out exactly what something does then you don’t get it. Welcome to the future, just think of the possibilities that RIM can do with this! Wireless Bluetooth connection to this box to display your information on your TV screen, BBM and full BlackBerry fedelity on a 1080p screen, ability to play your videos, music everything from the device in your pocket all using wireless to the TV. Ability to overlay who is calling, who just sent a message, email pops up all while watching TV connected from your BlackBerry. You watch a video podcast and get half way through on the train ride home, you walk in the door and turn on the TV to now continue to watch it on the big screen. Video chat with people that show on your TV when they call and you have your PlayBook.

If you people were not so busy smelling your own ass from your heads being up their so far you would realize RIM is about to revolutionize how you work with your data making it available on anything and all you can think about is Netflixs and TV programs… all that crap is just a given with a box like this. RIM is about to blow the front door wide open while your all busy looking out the back door at bunny rabbits!

Your talking about the device in your pocket being your mobile computer for everything you do. It will connect to everything and display its information that you want it to. Us BlackBerry people get that were ready for the next step while Apple is still trying to get profiles, notifications and security figured out.

Think for yourself before posting how bad an idea is because some idiot said “Its just like Apple TV”
