RIM bosses granted six-month reprieve

Business

RIM has six months to prove a real business need for its Co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie to retain their roles as Co-Chairmen of the Board, otherwise Northwest & Ethical Investments LP will take action. “We wanted to give them a chance to prove that there is an actual business necessity,” Jennifer Coulson, manager of corporate engagement at Northwest & Ethical, told Bloomberg at Tuesday’s RIM shareholder meeting. NEI threatened last month to file a motion to have RIM’s Co-CEOs removed from their roles has Board heads, but the the firm agreed not to proceed with its motion when RIM said it would assemble a committee of independent directors to investigate the matter and make recommendations. Proxy advisor Glass Lewis & Co. would later accuse RIM of using stall tactics to delay the decision, but NEI appears content with the actions RIM is taking, so says its decision to give RIM six months to plead its case. Thus far, RIM’s only real argument in favor of allowing Lazaridis and Balsillie to keep their joint roles has been that their Chairmen titles help the pair generate business overseas. Shares of RIM stock have declined in value by nearly 60% over the past 12 months.

This was the earth shattering RIM news?  That half a year from now they might consider not sharing the CEO title?  They’ll be out of the US market by then.

Zac wrote this one, so I’m assuming not.

My thoughts exactly.  I was waiting for a blockbuster, like RIM teams up with HP or something like that.  Maybe this isn’t it, though.

      • sirpaul

RIM teaming with HP? You must be joking.

    • Applesucksfatties

My thoughts are that iGellers earth shattering news was either 1. there was an annual RIM shareholder meeting yesterday or 2. his “trusted source” got grounded and couldn’t use the phone to give iGeller his next biggest story on RIM.

  • http://twitter.com/myz06vette Mike Beauchamp

Please tell me this isn’t the “bigger than all the people on biggest loser — before biggest loser” news. Are you serious?

this CAN NOT be the HUGE news. This is minor pointless news at best. Give us something better iBGR

  • Travisjenkins

If RIMS’s stock has declined by 60% in 12 months, they will be up to 90% in 6 more.  Smart guys!

    • sirpaul

Wow, good math…in in another 12 they will be an negative right? RIMs share will go back up.

      • Carmen

Wow, you know nothing about percentages.

        Umm, it’s called sarcasm.

I’m enjoying every minute of this. These two clowns are going to watch this company sink like the “Titanic”. They have NO clue what they’re doing & are proving that everyone else involved is clueless too. They’re going to bet the future of their company, their employees & Kitchener on QNX, an OS that they’ve only owned for less than a year. They can’t even get BBM or e-mail on a tablet. In the history books when you search “How to Destroy your Business”, RIM will be the first company on the list. It’s so ironic that these two fools totally dismissed the iPhone & now are trying to base their entire product-line around it. These guys are pathetic & are making the Canadian private-sector look like a bunch of retards.

    • Anonymous

actually, they have both bbm and email on their tablet. On top of that, they’ve owned QNX for more than a year…around 18months i believe.

@702f7ffd23beb7986754f142aeff3087:disqus – not everyone is basing their product line on the iPhone.. get over yourself.   RIM had the Storm series.. and now has a new Torch phone that is similar to an iPhone, but the rest all are all flip, sliders or candybar form factors with keyboards.   Just because a phone has a touch screen doesn’t mean it is an iPhone wanna-be..

Yes it does. Ouch I’m right aren’t I

It takes a sad person to actually enjoy a company with thousands of employees doing poorly, when they have no real, personal stake in the matter.

I happen to like the keyboard on my Venue Pro, and dead in 6 months? Double check your math, declining market share or not, RIM still has a lot of money.

Subject: [bgr] Re: RIM bosses granted six-month reprieve

  • Adam Kilker

RIM is going to split into two entities: Software and Hardware. Lazaridis is expected to head the hardware side and Balsillie the software. This will allow them to stay more competitive in the market and possibly take a route similar to what Palm did years ago by selling Palm OS and then eventually being bought out by another company.

    • Ramses71

that thought has been floating around the RIM campus for years with the catch being that software and hardware is all on Mike’s side. Jim’s is responsible for sales, marketing, call centers, market analysis, carrier management, all the corporate (or forward facing) part of the company. And in some ways the company has been operating (functionally) in that manner for some time. It’s the choice of hires responsible for the leadership that has failed.

  • Ramses71

The shareholders did the wrong thing by allowing Mike and Jim to continue as is. RIM still has potential and they have good people working there (for the most part) but they have some serious problems that need to be worked on. And those problems are not recent – they have known about internal issues for a couple of years (alot of churn, failed attempts at re-working the code on many software packages, Appworld being middle of the pack with lukewarm developer inroads not to mention poor tools, and so on) so this 6 month reprieve is just flabbergasting. How short-sighted.

    Key problems:

    1) Marketing – Jim’s ball park and has been for some time. Why let this continue?

    2) key hires that have not lived up to expectations – CIO is one such hire.

    3) floundering internal processes (partly brought on by point 2 above but also through hasty growth and ineffective middle managers and stringent (sometimes quite incompetent) info sec teams.

    4) wasted money and resources on projects and initiatives where they could be focused on areas of real value (again partly brought on by 2 above and her cronies).

    5) alot of infighting within the groups of all sectors of the business (RIM still has a very strong silo mentality which is hampering it’s productivity)

    6) a lot of development is done but in-experienced people (as much a co-op students need the experience don’t just drop them into the thick of it and expect them to excel – they need real mentoring which cannot be achieved in schools) – this slows down the rush to market of the products.

Just some points of things that have added to this scenario.

By the time their probationary six months comes to a screeching halt the company will have to change their name to R.I.P.

    • Applesucksfatties

I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com
