BlackBerry App World crosses the 1 billion download mark

mobile

Research In Motion on Tuesday announced a major milestone for its on-device software portal BlackBerry App World: 1 billion downloads served. ”The BlackBerry App World storefront launched a little over two years ago, and over that time, we’ve made many feature improvements, enhanced the look and feel, and added a ton of compelling apps,” RIM’s Alex Kinsella wrote on the company’s blog. “BlackBerry App World is now in over 100 countries, seeing an average of 3 million downloads per day, and we recently crossed the 1 billion app download milestone!” While the achievement is still impressive, RIM did confirm to BGR that the 1 billion figure includes application updates, however, and not just initial application downloads.

Not counting updates: 704 app downloads.

1B/704= 1,420,454 updates of the same app. Amazing.

      Lol

That probably includes the download of the App World app itself, which is a different app for every model of BB it seems

    • http://www.willw.net/ Will Robertson

It does not include downloads or updates of the AppWorld app.

      Yeah and BBM too.
Oh wait, both are already installed out of the box…
The only apps that can cause a big rise in downloads could be Twitter and facebook. But not everybody gets the notification for an update. Depends on your carrier and country.
I think we underestimate the number of apps downloaded / used by / for Blackberry.

Damn you guys are sarcastic (the comments)

    Why don’t I believe this?

    • Anonymous

with a total of 37852 (Apps[25083],Games[3320],Themes[9449]) apps showing in their app store, that would average 26,418 downloads per app… I find it very hard to believe this

Also, why does it seem that every time I use AppWorld it tells me theres a new update to both Messenger and App World… wonder if they are doing that to pump up the numbers.

      • http://twitter.com/Poita316 Peter Fox

        RIM has 67 million customers.
15 app per blackberry sounds like it could be done. If you don’t include updates. Look at the amount of Twitter / Facebook / whatsapp apps. If they include updates (Twitter twice for me and Facebook once, no whatsapp but this can differ per country and carrier depending availability) the number of actually downloaded apps drops, so why isn’t this possible?
I think it only shows that Blackberry users don’t care for apps and that you don’t get a blackberry because of the apps.

It’s fun reading your defenses of RIM.

        Giving me a good chuckle.

@LaLaLand Ah well, I like to make people laugh. Even the ones that find it easy and fun to jump the bashing wagon. I can name enough arguments why RIM is not as good as it could / should be, but try seeing the positive sides, it might make the world and your life a bit nicer ;)

  • Ayport

it would be 1Billion and 30 if it was available in my country

That like your local new car dealer reporting every vehicle that comes in for service as a “car sale”.

    • Anonymous

Except at least the local car dealer gets paid for doing the service; the updates are free.

      Lol so true.

This isn’t the “big story” you were talking about, is it?

It’s true look at the new Mac’s and their oh wait…

I owned a ‘virtual keyboard’ on an iPhone and will never go back.  I got big fat fingers and it simply doesn’t work, I need the feel of a physical key on my finger tips.  I use the touch display on my Torch only to dial phone numbers.

Boy Gennie Ass always looking for tiny fine prints just to make RIM look bad…change site name RIMHATERBOY.COM.  I’m sure Apple doesn’t count app update. Idiot!

    • The Donald.

Yeah! How dare they actually dig and tell the real story! They should just take everything RIM says at face value like all these other stank bush league sites!

Jamma, friend, please never come back here.

    • Anonymous

      Apple doesn’t count update.

  • JohNB

Blackberry App World also includes Blackberry Messenger.

If other stores offered their Messages app, it would also boost download numbers.

    • http://twitter.com/Poita316 Peter Fox

BBM is out of the box.
Some people have trouble seeing that and download it while it’s already on the device.

      • LaLaLand

BBM5 required a download if I recall correctly. Being that I was a blackberry customer for quite awhile – long before most of the bandwagon jumpers (had a BB7510 7-8 years ago) I think I’m most likely recalling correctly.

Seriously. I loved my time with RIM and the 7520 and the 9000 are 2 of my favorite phones of all time – but everyone knows BB AppWorld is crap.

  • Anonymous

Don’t forget BlackBerry App World is relatively new. Way before that and still operating now, are many 3rd party application storefronts which allow app downloads on to your BB. Some of these 3rd party app stores also offer promotions and what not and are quite popular. BBs aren’t an all eggs in one basket case like Apple where everything goes through Apple’s App Store, so these numbers are somewhat misleading when judging how many apps have been downloaded to BBs. You can always count on Engadget and other tech sites to neglect the obvious and only look to pump Apple’s tires.

    • LaLaLand

The reality is that no one with Blackberrys download apps – beyond twitter and Facebook and maybe a flash light app.

I had a one blackberry or another (about 10 models) in the last 7-8 years. Didn’t use another kind of phone. Given – the AppWorld hasn’t been around that long – I still only downloaded about 4 apps. Facebook, a flashlight app, a battery pull app(hahahahha) and BBM5.

Since buying the iPhone I have spent over 200 in apps alone.

Please dont compare the 2 platforms. That is ridiculous.

      • Biggreenapple

I have 25 apps on my bb and they vary from ordering a taxi cab ordering a pizza to streaming to local radio station in london (I live in asia) etc .

  • Applesucksfatties

I think what lends to my personal distaste for iZombies is the fact that they come out to RIM articles and post crap..   Who cares if it is initial downloads, updates, paying, non-paying, used, not used… give me a friggen break iZombies..   Why don’t you all go to your wonderful iTunes store and download one of the billion fart apps out there?

  • Anonymous

    Question:
When they go out of business (and, we know they will), what will happen to all those downloads?

  • Anonymous

fine RIM includes updates, so does apple and google, and they both have a lot of updates

  • maddog20311

it’s sad because apple’s app store has 15 billion downloads

  • Anonymous

How nice for them. . . and it only took two years.

  • http://twitter.com/BeanTNT Bean

    what a joke

  • http://twitter.com/jeffmik Jeff Mikolajow

    Rough crowd.

Would be interesting to see how many downloads the private app stores like Mobihand (that runs the Crackberry app) have. You don’t even need an app store to download & install BB apps – its just as easy to point at an OTA link.

    • Fatbambooshoot

It’s true! BB App World does not offer many of the apps I have installed. Many of the apps on my phone are from 3rd party websites.

If any of you guys can read and type chinese, you will be surprised at how many chinese blackberry websites there are that offers blackberry apps that you have never heard of.

The interface of the AppWorld is very usable, but the apps offered are very limited.
