Apple may launch 3G iPod touch in September, rumor claims

mobile

A Dutch Apple blog named AppleSpot reported on Friday that Apple will launch a new 3G iPod touch in September. Similar to options available for the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G, users would have the option of purchasing the 3G iPod touch directly from a wireless carrier with a data plan. We’re expecting a possible iPod/iPhone/iPad refresh in September, and so it’s entirely possible that Apple is considering creating a version with a 3G radio. Such a device could also help carriers lock in more data plans and would continue to boost Apple’s presence among the flood of new Android handsets. Our only gripe with the whole story is that AppleSpot doesn’t have a proven track record reporting on Apple rumors. Plus, a 3G iPod touch would be just a little weird given that we expect every major U.S. wireless carrier to announce the next generation iPhone.

Never going to happen. Stupid idea.

ITs actually a good idea with skype and other like companies that means you toss your voice plan and go straight VOIP. Think about the savings that could be used for data allowance.

hmmm i could ditch my cell contract and just use this per month almost like a prepaid iphone in a way.  i actually like this idea, for once apple has peaked my interest

There already is a 3G iPod, its called an iPhone.

I am getting so sick of these analysts speculation.

A 3G iPod? Really? So it can be almost EXACTLY like an iPhone? What reason would give Apple to do this unless it had a free allowance of data or something each month?

    Seriously, BGR?

Steve Job’s philosophy of Zen and simplicity strongly conflicts with this idea.

He does not believe in multiple products with only slight differentiation.  Remember how many times he poked fun at Microsoft for having a gazillion versions of Windows?

Product must have a clear, distinct line of difference.  That’s what leaves Apple as a consumer product.

I have to admit, this is one of stupidest posts I have seen in a long while.

It’s not stupid, actually.  Look at it like this: you’d be getting an iphone w/o having to buy the gateway voice plan.  Many people do not utilize the voice feature of their phones very often, relying on text or even voip when necessary.  This option would automatically cut your phone bill in half if you’re such a person.

They’ve already made this though! It’s called the iPhone…

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

Whatever you call it, I want an iPhone/Android-Smart-Phone that does not have a voice plan, just a data plan.  I hardly use any voice minutes. Mostly email-text and when wish to talk, can talk via skype.  Oops, I forgot, Blackberry with data only were like ten years ago :)

Contrary to what people may think, the audience for a ipod and iphone are different in terms of usage.  As a ipod is like a iphone without the phone, the data part like an iPad is the key.  Basically games that use online multiplayer instead of bluetooth would benefit and Apple would benefit from more sales as the options open up to consumers more.  However, if the data packages are the same as the iPhone then it is pretty useless, as the consumer will pay $200 + for the device, might as well get the iPhone.

  • Msampsontest

This was a good idea when the original iphone came out. When it cost a ton of money and plenty of people who wanted one were locked into other contracts. In 2011, if you’re interested in this, you might as well just get the iphone

Boy, this is one rumor I hope comes true. I’d rather have a 3g iPod Touch for text and email, and I’ll keep my cheap dumb phone for the few phone calls I make.

There is no reason for this.

I don’t understand the negative comments on this. Analysts and others have been rumoring a “cheap iPhone” for the past year or so. This could be it. A new iPod Touch 3G allows for mobile e-mail, iMessage, Skype over 3G (or Wifi), Facetime, access to apps, etc with no contract. Throw on a $15 a month data plan (month to month) and you are set. Great for teens at $300 or so. If you need a voice plan, you can get a cheap prepaid phone or a free feature phone with no texting/data.

If they do plan to make the ipod touch 3G capable, let’s hope they do something to increase the battery life. It’s OK Apple, you can increase the thickness of the device by a few millimeters. I don’t mind. Just give me better battery life!
