Amazon could ship 1-1.2 million tablets during third quarter, report says

Tablets

According to a new report from DigiTimes, Amazon is expected to ship a “conservative” 1-1.2 million of its new tablets during the third quarter — a time frame that’s in line with earlier reports that the online retailer would get its unannounced tablet out the door by August. Reportedly, orders from Amazon are the most positive of all tablet-builders so far, and the company is expected to demand as many as 2 million touch panel displays in August and September. While very little is known about Amazon’s tablet — or possibly tablets — we have heard that it is prepping an entry level model codenamed “Coyote,” with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, as well as a second more powerful “Hollywood” model that’s powered by NVIDIA’s new quad-core T30 “Kal-El” processor, which offers a 500% performance increase over Tegra 2. Amazon already has a number of services that will compliment a tablet perfectly, such as Cloud Drive, Cloud Player, Amazon MP3, Unbox streaming videos, Kindle, and more — all of which will no doubt help it stir up the current tablet market.

They could also ship 2-2.4 million Tablets but that isn’t the important number. The important number is………..how many consumers will actually buy one?

How many customers? Count me as the first…. Amazon is just one of those companies that take care of customers first…

Oh and the article forgot Amazon also has their own app store too with a free app daily and discounts on other apps everyday. Can’t wait too see what they look like

if they can sell them at around $200 then that might be appealing, but they will not be able to go head to head with Apple on price because of daily discounts on crappy apps alone.

$200? what the hell are you talking about? we’re talking about Talbets not E-Readers aka Kindles. Amazon has an enitre eco-system including streaming movies, their own MP3 store that has the best prices anywhere, cloud drive. etc… If they package it nicely the’ll be good. I also highly doubt they will even push to compete on price with the iPad. I don’t see a company like Amazon who is very price conscious charging $499 and $599 for a Tablet. I’m sure they’ll be less than that.

@Good_Ole_Pinocchio You are right about the ecosystem, which I would argue is better than Apple’s in many ways, not to mention that they sell just everything which makes them a well rounded consumer experience.  I know 200 is a stretch, but I’m just saying they need to seriously undercut Apple to gain or overtake them.

Rumor is $350 for the dual core and $450 for the quad core, if they can do those prices they will have a really good shot at moving a lot.  I don’t think any one Android tablet is going to over take Apple and the iPad, but I do think it is only a matter of time before the army of Android tablets do.

quad core?  for what?  what’s wrong with these people?  try making an OS that can take advantage of a quad core CPU first.

    • Anonymous

Didn’t you read, it is for “500% performance increase over Tegra 2″ (dual core).  Nothing is wrong with these people, newer and faster hardware is coming out and they are going to use it.  I would gladly take a quad core over a dual core, it will allow more powerful apps to come to the platform.

I don’t know why you think that OS can’t take advantage of it.  Android runs the linux kernel, which has been supporting and taking advantage of multi-core processors for years.

I will seriously consider an Amazon tablet if the price is right.  That is, assuming the analysts are right and the company can subsidize the tablet cost in hopes it drives their other businesses.

It’s going to have to be dirt cheap to buy, like a Kindle.  As someone who already owns an iPad I would have no use for it.  I am semi-interested solely because I am into tech, but honestly, as a normal consumer anything besides the iPad is junk at this point due to lack of QUALITY developer support because let’s face it Android is not for *normal* people just like Linux isn’t ideal for the average consumer.  Yeah, you can do a lot with it, but who really cares besides us all?

    • Anonymous

I don’t know if I agree with you that Android is not for “normal” people.  My wife picked a Android phone a loves it. I also know many non-techies that have picked Android and love it as well, some of which came from the iPhone.  To be fair, I know people that switched from Android to the iPhone, but that is not the point.

The reason why “normal” people tend to flock to Apple is because the stigma Apple has of being easy to use for non-techie people.  These people either are not interested in, do not care, or have the know how to research all the products out there to see what they like and suites them best.  I don’t blame them though, it is like I have no interest when my wife takes about decorating the house.

As for quality developers, I don’t think that is the really the case anymore.  Android has grabbed enough market share and foot hold, that it is starting to draw more and more developers.  It looks like iOS and Android will be battling it out in the top space for a while.  It will be interesting to see if RIM, WebOS or Win Phone 7 move up to compete with them.

But do normal people pick it *because* it’s Android? Or because it does internet, email, games, and apps – pretty much “like an iPhone/iPad”? Most of my non-techie friends who have Android got it because either they couldn’t get an iPhone on their carrier or couldn’t afford the data plan on the iPhone.

In my experience, people get iPhones because they’re iPhones, while people get Androids because it’s a viable alternative available to them. Mindshare is an important component. So far, Apple has even more in the tablet arena.

Everyone I know that switched to Android simply like the fact that they can make the device their own. I’m not talking about rooting, but rather little things like changing notifications sounds and customizing the look of the homescreen via widgets.

How many iPads do they ship?

  • Anonymous

I believe Amazon is the only other company that really has a consumer ecosystem to take on Apple.

I wonder if they’ll use the Kindle branding, or just have a Kindle app like the iPhone has an iPod app.

The video on demand service hasn’t been called Unbox since 2008.

What a shame. Amazon is about to waste money on a failed tablet. I thought amazon was a well managed company. I guess we all make mistakes. Note: I have never made a mistake in my life. true story™©®

Worst case it just becomes an expensive color ebook reader, right?

    • Zac Caslin

The CEO said in an interview with Charlie Rose that they wouldn’t make a tablet. But who knows.

Yall are in here thinking with your nerd brains again…

I once had someone ask me “why would I choose a kindle over an ipad?”. They were avid book readers and were swept up under the craze of seeing a book on the commercial for the ipad.

I don’t even own a kindle and I was able to convince him to buy it! Showed him the screen and how dark the blacks were compared to the ipad. And then sold him on the battery life. Shoot, I should have been a salesman! (Former salesman)

On this tablet…it’s going to be the same thing. There’s a HUGE population in the US who would fight a person over their loyalty to Amazon. All amazon has to do is make it affordable, logical, and precise. That’s it! That’s been their business model for what? 10+ years??? This is why folks don’t mind paying 80/yr for prime! And when they get new perks, they get giddy.

The ipad is going to have serious competition because there will be a lot of folks who will look at that amazon tablet and go “hrm, so I can stream using my VOD account, upload my files using my cloud, buy all my cheap *legal* music, and take advantage of these apps of the day??? All for this low price?!?!? Deal!”

Instead of all this “well, this has a quad core but this has a dual core and I don’t know the complexity of the android system might be too advanced for me to do the simple stuff I’m used to doing….”

    • http://twitter.com/slbailey2 slbailey2

I’m one that will buy a 7″ Amazon tablet.  Also when did Amazon prime go down to $80 a year!  I’m an Amazon prime user and when I joined, it was $99 a year.

      • Anonymous

It’s $79 a year. And if you’re a student and buy a book, it’s free. Or at least it was.

      • http://twitter.com/JijiNakaba Jiji Nakabayashi

It’s also free for “Amazon Mom”, just buy some baby stuff, don’t even have to be a real mom. But the two free primes don’t qualify for free video streaming.

    • Anonymous

That’s why I’ve said before that Amazon is the only company who has a real, viable, consumer ecosystem that can take on Apple.

Although, so far the market has only shown that consumers want iPads, not tablets. So it may be more logical to say that Amazon will kill off the iPad competitors, while not dipping too much into iPad market share.

And 1.9 m will be returned and end up in the garbage where they belong.
