Next-generation iPhone for China Mobile spotted

Images of what could be a next generation iPhone headed to China Mobile have been re-published by Sohu.com. Is it the real deal? It might be. For one, it runs an unannounced baseband software (version 06.10.01), which could hint that Apple’s prepping support for China Mobile’s 3G TD-SCDMA network. Also, in June, a China Mobile employee said that the iPhone 5 would be arriving in September, and there have been reports of Apple’s COO Tim Cook sitting in meetings with China Mobile execs, which suggests that there’s definitely some relationship building going on.

      Recently, timn said that Apple has been putting iPhone 5 components (said to be smaller) into an iPhone 4 case shell (for obvious reasons). Apple is definitely not pulling another Gizmodo like incident this time. So that could be a plausible reason why this looks like an iPhone 4, but is a prototype.

    So it looks the same. Expect the front facing camera – looks like it’s packing a bigger sensor. Maybe a 2MP or 3MP camera?

      More MP != bigger sensor. It means more pixels are packed into the same area.

      That is why a 10MP on a DSLR will always perform much better than one on a P&S or cell phone – both have same number of pixels, but the DSLR has those same pixels at a much larger size (more light hitting each individual pixel).

    Why do all these ‘spy shots’ have to be either extremely blurry? If you are going to risk getting caught might as well take some decent pictures, as well as capturing the whole phone.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple releases a 4S and they ALSO release the 5 at the same time.

    The iPhone 5 would pack the A5, better camera, bigger screen, etc while the 4S would replace the 4 and be only slightly modified, designed to sell at a lower price point, perhaps prepaid.

      Or they just lower the price of iPhone 4, make the 3GS practically free and stick to concentrating on one phone at a time as they always have.

        I think the 4S in this instance would be a re-branded 4 with support for more carriers. And sold for free on contract or $299 off contract (prepaid).

        The 3GS would be discontinued.

        Just a prediction.

        3GS won’t be discontinued and there is no way iPhone 5 will be free on contract, nor will it be sold for a mere $300 off contract. That would be ridiculous. The iPhone costs almost $200 in parts alone, never mind manufacturing, transportation and point of sale costs (at Apple stores) associated with it.

        Anyways, you have your right to voice your prediction, no matter how obviously wrong it is. I mean, a brand new 16GB iPod touch is $320….Remember, Apple isn’t out to get the largest market share, they are out there to MAXIMIZE PROFITS. It’s all about the profit.

        Or they could just release iPhone 5 for all the carriers, instead of remaking iPhone 4 with better specs and still making an iPhone 5 for a select carrier (probably AT&T) with higher specs, still.

        I didn’t say the 5 would be free on contract… I said the 4/4S would be, much like the 3GS is now. An 8GB iPod touch sells for $220… Given that memory usually doubles every year or every other year, I could see a 16GB off-contract low-end iPhone for around $300.

        The reason I say the 3GS will be discontinued is that’s what they did with the 3G. When the 4 came out, the 3G was discontinued. I don’t see Apple selling the 5, the 4, and the 3GS simultaneously.

        In my prediction, the “4S” would be a slightly rebranded 4 capable of more networks, perhaps with cheaper materials. The 5 would be released as the flagship phone with better specs and a slightly different look.

      Well they “could” cheer about the fact they don’t have a curated app store that tells them what they can and can’t download. They can also side load apps, they can change their UI with simple and easy to use Apps that don’t require their phones to be jailbroken, they have REAL widgets, Live wallpapers…um, let me see… oh they have 4G with LTE and WiMax, they have screens that are bigger than 3.5″ and removable batteries, they have NFC and Google Wallet which launches this year…um…do I need to go on? Cause I can…I’m just saying. Can your iPhone do any of that…right now…without a jailbreak?

        Or an excellent industrial design that everyone has to put in an after market case because the phone is so damn flimsy. Apple have reverted to the old car company model where you bought the chassis and engine and had a coach builder create a unique body.

        Flimsy? Really? I’ll give you that some people have the antennae issue, but the iPhone 4 is the most solid iPhone since the original. I’ve literally dropped mine, caseless, onto concrete dozens of times, and while it has a few nicks, there are no cracks.

        It’s glass and steel, I don’t know how you can complain about the lack of plastic.

    As we have seen in the past, Apple does not redesign the iphone. We saw that with the 3G and 3GS. I belive the iphone 5 and iphone 4GS are going to look the same. Apple got off on its schedule with everything so they are releasing the iphone in september. I bet the iphone 5 will come out in Q1 or Q2 of 2012 with a new design along with the ipad 3.

    This is a build for China Mobile’s G3 network. It’s a CDMA handset and yes, G3 is their name for 3G.

    It’s not likely a new model of anything, just another CDMA iPhone4.

    Couldn’t they have at least used a decent camera to take that picture with. I grow tired of these Blair Witch pictures.  I’m sure they could have just used their phone’s camera to take it. Perhaps an angled shot would have been nice to see if the thickness is any different. We all know what the front face of the iPhone looks like by now. It hasn’t changed over the years.

    There are a number of good points in this article.  The iPhone 5 A5 package would be the better camera, larger screen, etc., while the 4S replace the 4 and be only slightly modified, designed to sell at a lower price, perhaps a version prepaid emerging markets.
