Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi Android tablet now $499

mobile

On Wednesday, Motorola announced that the Wi-Fi version of its Motorola XOOM Android Honeycomb tablet is now just $499 — $100 cheaper than the retail price when it launched in February. There’s no word yet whether or not Verizon Wireless will follow suit and drop the price of the 3G version of the XOOM, although the carrier has yet to roll-out the promised 4G LTE update, so we suspect the price won’t change anytime soon. The XOOM features a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 resolution display, is powered by NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 2 processor, and offers 32GB of on-board storage. When we originally reviewed the device we said we “weren’t sure how much better an Android tablet could get,” but, that was before the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, LG G Slate, HTC Flyer, ASUS Transformer, and other tablets hit the market.

Its a doorstop.  No wonder its in the bargain bin.  You can find the tab well below retail too.  Because nobody is buying Android tablets.  Because they suck.

same price as ipad, with 100,000 less apps, and half the battery life

      what a joke.

just playing devil’s advocate b/c I think the xoom is a HUGE (quite literally) piece of junk also….but who the hell needs 100,000 apps.  oooh, i have 300 apps to tell me what the weather is….I have 500 apps to help me check sports scores…what a joke

Norm, so many people like your comments when your account gets hacked.
Or you start taking your medication.  Keep up the decent post.

Should be $399 right from day 1

  • Anonymous

Nice… I’ll still get an iPad though.

    • http://www.droiddoes.com/ iNorm

If you want quality apps and manufacture support that is your best bet. Otherwise if you want to throw away 500 dollars for a web browser the xoom is great.

hits keep on coming with you.

    Still Xooming right past it

Good but the magic spot is $400, at least until developers start pumping up good apps.

The Xoom was impressive when it hit… Then we found out about no SD support? Then we found out about no software support? Then we found out about, well, it’s a Motorola product… $499 is a ton better than $599, but compared to what’s out now, it really is about $100-200 too expensive… Anyone wanna go $399? $349?

    • Mac

But, but it will get LTE some year.

      • Michael Scrip

Great…. it’s still does nothing*… but it does it faster.

        * it was a joke

    • Anonymous

So basically you’re saying that it wasn’t impressive when it hit…

Reactionary pricing this close to when a product launched never ends well…  Bye-bye Motorola XOOM, better luck next time.

How embarrassing for the 3 people carrying these around — a future thrift shop item waiting to happen :(

Android tablets are nothing but hand held web browsers. Only difference is who you want to buy it from.  Apps are wack, productivity is no more than an EVO.  I like a lot of Android smartphones but their tablets are a waste of money.

Tell us how u truly feel.

Whatever happened to that 4G upgrade?

    • Mattyfromma

The few people who bought the 3g version to hopefully use the LTE someday are probably very unhappy customers right now lol.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

Why do apple drones fel like they have to bash everything that isnt apple? i have a xoom and love it.  Moto and every other tablet maker knows there is no ipad killer, only you drones think each tablet is proclaiming themselves so. The popular choice in no way equals best choice, seeour current president for a case in point.

    • JaJU

So when is yur next Spaceship flight to Earth? Mars MUST be boring being there all by yourself

    • Anonymous

Okay, convince me you love it. What exactly do you do with your XOOM that is so great? Browse the web? Email? Side load Apps? What is it that is so awesome that it makes you “love” it.

Lets see i browse the web, edit documents, i download cds over the air for free, i stream music to my Definitive Technology home theater system through bluetooth, I share documents with my computer with bluetooth, I connect it to my HD projector with HDMI and watch movies, I read books, I use the free gps navigation, video chat…. Do u need me to go on.. I have a wifi version tethered to my 4G Droid charge.. O yeah almost forgot, my Xoom is overclocked to 1.5ghz and I still get good battery life :-)

im not an apple drone, i hate apple products.

why cant android geek fanboys admit android tablets are half-assed sh1t?

    • Anonymous

The fact you are the first one in this topic to bring up any ‘Apple drones’ says it all. Newsflash: the whole tech weblog world is railing against everything that’s even the least bit related to Apple, irrespective of the topic, because they supposedly only make shit products that are only bought by drones. Not the other way around.

Meanwhile, the market and every professional reviewer on earth already established there literally isn’t *any* viable competitor to even the 1st-gen iPad. Of all the Android tablets, the Xoom is one of the most overhyped one, but it turned out to be crap compared to most other Android tablets, with unfinished, unstable software, crap battery life, heavy and bulky, and lacking many features initially promised (hows that ’4G coming soon’ working out for you? Or HD YouTube at acceptable framerates).

So no matter how much you love or hate Apple, the Xoom is one big pile of fail, and if you bought it, you should feel sorry for yourself that you didn’t either wait for the Samsung 10.1, or bought an iPad instead.

The fact that you are whining on a forum how it’s the Apple drones are bashing anything that isn’t Apple suggests you are simply in denial. Anger comes next, then acceptance. Good luck.

    • numetheus

Much like Android drones mindlessly bash everything that IS Apple. Lots of people love iPad and iPhone because of the apps and other things, NOT because it’s the popular choice. That is an excuse Android fanboys give because they can’t understand why someone doesn’t like the same things they like. I love my Inspire 4G. But you know what? The apps are shit compared to the iOS side. I don’t think that because iOS is the popular choice. I think that because I have had both for a long time and have used them extensively. In comparison Android apps are crap. ESPECIALLY if you like to play games on them. I have no idea why we have 1 ghz dual core processors when nothing makes use of it and our games are simple mobile phone style games.

  • Bringit

    That’s $499 too much.

Yeah Right next to the Apple TV and the MacBook Air.  They can’t even give those away.

      • Anonymous

        Definitely the dumbest comment ever.

      • Anonymous

Umm the MacBook air sells very well. Apple tv sold
well but is just as useless as google tv

  • Anonymous

the reason why moto isn’t budging to lower the xooms price to $399 is because…they need to pay off their big budget ad it ran during the superbowl.

  • Anonymous

They could lower the price to $99 and I still wouldn’t buy it. It feels horrible in the hand.

  • Anonymous

    nice

  • Anonymous

Bout damn time Motorola lower the price too 499.00$. They should of done that from the start. It will never sell if u start price point at 599.00$ I think Ill wait ill their next tablet with Ice cream.

  • http://twitter.com/dlrothenberg dustin

seriously, this things hould be $199.  it is so heavy it’s uncomfortable to hold.  I give my vote to the samsung tab 10.1 and the acer transformer tablet (I think that’s what it’s called).   both of them are slim and feel like featherweights compared to this thing.  the xoom really is so heavy it’s almost like a full laptop.  feels that way to me at least

  • http://twitter.com/dlrothenberg dustin

the touchpad is just as chunky as it looks too…and the one I played with the screen response was just terrible.  trying to type on it was laughable.

  • http://twitter.com/dlrothenberg dustin

true true and true.  I saw this larger archos internet table thing that was waaaaay cheaper than the xoom or any of them in fact…..and it worked fine.  for major stuff I use a real computer.  honestly…who’s going to be typing their masters thesis on a touchscreen…in other words…who needs 95% of what some of these tablets proudly flaunt as the reason for their $600 pricetag

  • http://twitter.com/dlrothenberg dustin

i hate apple but that macbook air sells like they’re collectors items or something.  it’s funny that people would love the iPad but hate on the macbook air.   it’s a laptop the size of a tablet.  i’d get an air before i’d waste money on the iPad ($500-$850 Toy).

  • http://twitter.com/dlrothenberg dustin

P.S. – if steve jobs had allowed flash on the iphone in 2007 (it’s the biggest joke that he tried to say it couldn’t run flash, or flash was “inefficient”)….he just wanted to control you all through the apple ecosystem and he wasn’t about to let flash developers create web apps that you could use for free on your iPhone/iOS device when he could banish flash and force everyone to learn to program for the apple ecosystem for which he could control which things you can and cannot use on your device.  apple creates some awesome products.  AWESOME….I just can’t stand people that defend their business practices as having helped you out in any way other than to make money for apple and screw developers.
