Games were most downloaded and most purchased mobile apps in Q2, Nielsen finds

Developers looking to attack mobile app segments where they might have the best chance of scoring big with smartphone users would be well served to take notice of Nielsen’s latest findings. The market research firm on Wednesday published some findings from its Mobile Insights and Mobile Apps Playbook reports for the second quarter of 2011, and “Games” was once again the most popular app category. In the second quarter, 64% of app downloaders — smartphone users surveyed who had downloaded an app within the past 30 days — reported having downloaded at least one game over the past 30 days, just ahead of weather apps at 60% and social networking apps at 56%. What’s more, a whopping 93% of app downloaders are willing to pay for the games they play. IPhone owners seem to be the most avid gamers according to Nielsen’s data; iPhone gamers play games for about 14.7 hours on average each month, nearly twice as long as the average mobile gamer last quarter. Nielsen also found that consumers with iPhones, Windows Phones or Android phones were likely to have downloaded the games they play, while BlackBerry users and feature phone users typically played pre-loaded games. Hit the break for additional charts highlighting Nielsen’s findings.

IOS gamers spend more time playing games because they are awesome on that side. Android games are mostly crap with a couple that have crossed over. NOVA 2 and Modern Combat 2 are the only good Android games that actually make use of the graphics capability. And that level of game is prevalent on iPhone. On android you only have a couple. The rest are tiny mobile phone style games. Its crap. I love my Android phone but spend less times playing games because it can’t compete with iPhone in that area.

No surprise that BlackBerry users don’t download much games. The games in App World are underwhelming and cost too much, and not to mention App World is a pain in the ass to use.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

    I’m sorry I am confused…

the first two charts don’t equal 100%…
So 64% of the applications used were games, and 60% of the time it is weather applications, so 124% of the applications used were games and weather

I think the chart shows that a certain percent of people downloaded games, a certain weather etc. But people may install games AND weather and others (multiple choices not just one) so it would add to over 100%.

      EDIT: Yep.

“In the second quarter, 64% of app downloaders — smartphone users surveyed who had downloaded an app within the past 30 days — reported having downloaded at least one game over the past 30 days, just ahead of weather apps at 60%…”
