Facebook announces Skype-powered video chat

Breaking

Facebook on Wednesday took the wraps off of the latest major addition to the world’s most popular social network: video chat. Through a partnership with Skype, Facebook video users will now be able to video chat with each other through the company’s new service… for free. The service works just like Skype’s standard video calling service, but video calls can be initiated right from within the Facebook website with a simple click. “A few months ago, we started working with Skype to bring video calling to Facebook,” Facebook wrote on its blog. “We built it right into chat, so all your conversations start from the same place. To call your friend, just click the video call button at the top of your chat window.” Facebook video calling will roll out to all users over the next few weeks.

    That’s the announcement?

    Really?

All the buzz and hype is over Skype power video chat?

Man this rumor was boiled in LameSauce and served with a pile of bull shit.

    • PechoBoy

      lol true

Fairly big deal. Facebook gets even more usefulness. Skype’s streaming video tech, in my personal experience, is better than what Google is working with. If Skype didn’t get money for licensing their tech, they get a hell of a lot more visibility by partnering.

It might not be as splashy as what you were expecting, but it’s a pretty big deal.

      • Anonymous

Have you tried “Hangout” in Google+?

      • Anonymous

Tragically, my G+ invite must have been lost in the mail. But unless they’re using a different codec than what they use for Google Talk (why do that?), I maintain that Skype offers a better video experience. I also feel like their audio codecs are a little cleaner.

YMMV, naturally. This is just opinion.

      • serpentor

@Sqube:disqus The big innovation with Hangout is that it does group video chat and also how it does it. I don’t think fb skype does group.

      • Anonymous

Not only is Skype video “production quality”, but it’s been hard-tested against a few hundred million people concurrently already. Add Facebook’s “few” million people to it, and it’s much more mature and usable than Huddle.

Huddle is still “beta”, hasn’t had that kind of hard testing, it isn’t Google’s primary business where they live/die by it, and still has a lot of growing up to do.  I’d personally rather go with Skype than something Google could “ditch” tomorrow.

    • serpentor

Dude, do you realize what this means!?!?

You don’t need to open up Skype anymore to video chat with friends! Well, unless they aren’t on fb, then you’ll still need to open Skype. Or if you’re using it to call out or call in.

I think what was really ‘awesome’ for them is they didn’t have to buy skype for 8 billion.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

I’m on Facebook. Admittedly i don’t have a ton of friends on there. Mostly close friends and family members. I don’t really understand the need for Facebook to begin with. And it’s not that big of a deal.

Bottom line is this. For those of you who rely on facebook for everything. It’s a big deal. For everyone else in the world.

        Whoop-de-freaking-doo.

/now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

You’re right.  But isn’t that with everything?  If a person doesn’t use or care for something then it’s not a big deal.  But if someone does care or use something it is a big deal.  You didn’t say anything that no one else knew nor that applies to everything in the fricken world.

Anyhow, this is a big deal to the MILLIONS OF FACEBOOK AND SKYPE USERS.

      • Mattyfromma

I agree i dont see what the big deal is with video chat.  Facebook and twitter are mostly people saying where they are or a short comment on something.  I think most people will be bored talking to one person at a time. Facebook and twitter is really only making people feel like they are important talking about what they are doing, which personally i dont get i dont think i am a celebrity so i could care less.

      • sirpaul

And you also have everyone on FB available to talk to. Without them having to install and make a skype account. The addon is easy to instal and doesn’t require making another account. This is going to be immensely useful for me as I video chat almost weekly.

      • serpentor

        good point.

      • LookLively

        1. Why would you want to give one corporation that much access and control over how you communicate? Don’t be such pitiless consumers.
        2. Now anyone on your FB list, including people you don’t want to vid chat with, will be bugging you to do just that. *turns status to offline*

sidebar: Has anyone noticed that conversations and “likes” on FB pages (not profiles) are now automatically indexed on Google. So if you for instance “like” a post about a particular politician, or worst add a snide comment to that original post, your name and that “like” or comment can now be searched without even registering or logging into Facebook. If I was under 30 I’d be afraid to use FB. HR departments are building a virtual file on you as we speak. Career ladders will eventually become small stools based on online activity.

      • sirpaul

@LookLively:disqus People I don’t want to chat with very likely won’t want to chat back. And considering we’re friends of FB I don’t see a reason not to chat if they want to. It’s not like they are random strangers.

If I don’t feel like talking or I don’t have time I can go offline or politely decline. It’s not like I’m a celebrity so doubt anyone is very keen on chatting all the time.

I know they are indexed, and that’s fine with me. I watch how I behave on all groups anyways, and the second you post something on a PUBLIC GROUP facebook has option to make it truly public by allowing indexing. That’s the idea behind ‘public’.

I think my online presence does more good than bad for jobs I apply for. Maybe it has to do with my life style, maybe also because I am careful what and how I post….but I couldn’t find anything I wouldn’t want anyone to see when Googling my name. Though I understand why others may feel differently.

    • sirpaul

Dude, video chat is huge. What’s you problem. What would you have liked instead? Circles? lol…

  • http://twitter.com/bugabuga Max Smolev

But can you chat with 5 people at once, like in Google+ ? :D
Idea to charge for video chat in Skype was lame to begin with

  • http://profiles.google.com/sagar.sangani Sagar Sangani

Feels like they are feeling the heat from Google.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

      Feeling the heat?!?!

If google can get their invites out and open up to everyone they’ll be feeling the 2nd degree burns.

the idea of circles is AMAZING, and what Facebook should of done from the get go. And one of the main reason i do not have many people on facebook. I use Facebook for close people and Twitter for anyone. I have one small circle and one large circle.

      • Anonymous

how is google circles different from  facebook groups?, although fb groups came into light last October but didn’t gain significance as people seem more open these days

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

Seriously? Log onto your Facebook account from your iPhone or your Android’s app. and send a message to a “group” of friends. It will not happen. It cannot happen. The feature isn’t there.

Google Plus. It’s there. There is a big difference.

      • http://twitter.com/TheBigNoob Ryan Fraser

        Simple, because circles aren’t groups.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

I’m tired of people thinking everything Google does is great.  It’s not.  Everything they do is beta and we are all testers, period.  It’s easy to come out with something and then add newer ideas after you’ve had time to sit on the sideline and watch for a while.  Google is nothing but a copy cat.  They did the same thing with Android and Google + is another.  Just sit on the sideline, watch what others do and then say “hey, we can do this too”  But they leave out the beta part.

      • Anonymous

@yahoo-GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE:disqus I use FriendCaster for Android and it’s right there. I also set the privacy for the “default” posting from the mobile app, and that’s usually fine.

      • sirpaul

I’ve been using G+ consistently the past week and have to say, while clean and nice etc….It has very little that FB doesn’t, and lacks a lot that FB has.

    • sirpaul

G+ was announced a week ago. FB has been working on this for months now.

      • Anonymous

Sure, but what about all the apologists that keep glazing about how much better Google+ is over FB?

        That’s the topic.

  • Anonymous

When is facebook going to realize that facebook friends aren’t really friends. “what? you’re telling me people don’t actually have 600 friends in real life?!?!!?”

The funniest part is that the image attached to this article is actually live video. Those 2 guys aren’t a static picture, they actually just stared at each other and smiled awkwardly for 5 minutes before hanging up. Facebook “networking” in real time video!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

What does your first comment have to do with anything?  You do realize that in addition to people that aren’t really “friends” millions of users actually have real friends on their list as well, idiot.

  • Anonymous

So when Windows Phone 7 get FFC and skype integration on the next set of phones, it’ll be all set. Nice move MS. I’m no fan of video calls, I think it’s a gimmick, but to  have all your facebook friends available, seen s like a sweet idea.

    Facebook announces Microsoft-powered video chat
    FTFY…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=663379076 Rob Lawson

    Ohh
i love the battle of the Tech giants!!! Facebook just partnered with
Skype via Microsoft. that leaves Google (gchat) and Apple (face time) in
the dust!! Android may have the lead now. but in the long run, Im
all in with Microsoft, they know how to partner w/good companies.
(facebook,Nokia, Baidu,) unlike Google who dont ahave  many fiends in the
industry and cant make great product other android! pow!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

comparing Skype with gchat and facetime is like comparing AIM with BBM…. they are clearly not the same.  One is looking for it’s own users to communicate with each other while the other is looking for anyone to use it.  Stupid comparison.

This was the most lame announcement ever. Thanks Suck, err, Zuck, for such a boring announcement! Can’t wait for the next one.

  • http://twitter.com/jj_hh1 J Hamburg

Zucki would have had better feedback if he wouldn’t have hyped the topic as AWESOME.
Now people are giggling about the quite nice new feature – bad marketing!

Has anyone tested to see how the video quality is? cause it has always suck on skype. The other day i had a facetime call with a friend who was on a business trip to japan and the call was crystal clear, i can’t call my other friend on skype who lives 2 blocks from me and get the same quality.

So he and the dude he’s chatting with both have on winter hats indoors, probably in summertime. Guys, you definitely ain’t looking to score with chicks with that look. Maybe other dudes? Or Rimjobbers?

  • Curiousgeorgem

none of this matters on the mobile front if most US carriers do not supply the speed to make it worth wild.

so will this work on a playbook and not an ipad?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

This is why Google+ will not come close to facebook…. combining the largest social networking site with the most popular video chatting software.  Come on son. Wait til they add that functionality in facebook mobile apps.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com
