Amazon updates Cloud Drive and Cloud Player with unlimited music space, free storage for Amazon MP3s, iPad web player

Moments ago Amazon announced that it has made a number of enhancements to its Amazon Cloud Drive and Cloud Player services. First — for a limited time — anyone who signs up will get unlimited space for music. That includes users who signs up for the minimum $20/year 20GB plan. Second, Amazon has announced that Cloud Drive customers can now store all MP3s purchased from the Amazon MP3 music store for free — that includes those that were bought before Amazon launched the Cloud Drive and Cloud Player services, and your tunes don’t count against the overall storage count. Finally, Amazon announced that its Cloud Player for Web is now available on the iPad, and that it’s been optimized for use with the Safari browser. Amazon Announces Storage Plans for Amazon Cloud Drive with Unlimited Space for Music, Free Storage for all MP3s Purchased at Amazon MP3 and Cloud Player Support for iPad

SEATTLE – July 6, 2011 – Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced three enhancements to Amazon Cloud Drive and Cloud Player: storage plans that include unlimited space for music, free storage for all Amazon MP3 purchases and Cloud Player for Web, now on iPad.

“Customers are already enjoying Cloud Drive and Cloud Player and now for just $20 a year, customers can get unlimited space for music,” said Craig Pape Director of Amazon Music. “Additionally, we are adding free storage for all MP3s purchased from Amazon MP3, and support for the iPad. Our customers love Cloud Drive and Cloud Player and we’re excited to innovate these services on their behalf.”

Unlimited Space for Music
Now, for a limited time, Amazon customers who purchase a Cloud Drive storage plan will receive unlimited space for their MP3 and AAC (.m4a) music files. This offer is available for even the lowest price plan: $20/year for 20 GB of file storage plus unlimited space for music. Customers can visit (www.amazon.com/clouddrive/manage) to purchase a Cloud Drive storage plan and receive unlimited space for music.

Store all Amazon MP3 Purchases for Free
Customers can now store all of their Amazon MP3 purchases for free in Cloud Drive, including future MP3 purchases as well as all purchases made before the launch of Cloud Drive and Cloud Player. MP3s purchased from Amazon MP3 and stored in Amazon Cloud Drive will not count against a customer’s storage quota.

Cloud Player for Web on iPad
Also new, Cloud Player for Web on iPad. Cloud Player, combined with unlimited space for music in Cloud Drive, enables customers to play music stored in the cloud on any Android phone, Android tablet, Mac, PC, and now on their iPad. Cloud Player for Web has been optimized to offer customers streaming playback of their Cloud Drive music using the Safari browser for iPad. To access Cloud Player for iPad, customers simply open their Safari browser and visit (www.amazon.com/cloudplayer) to start listening to their music.

Storage for Music and More
All customers automatically start with 5 GB of free Cloud Drive storage to begin uploading their digital music library, and for a limited time, those who purchase any Cloud Drive storage plan will receive unlimited space for music at no additional cost.  In addition to unlimited space for music, Cloud Drive allows customers to upload and store all kinds of digital files, including photos, videos and documents which are stored securely and available via web browser on any computer. Customers who qualified for 20 GB of free storage from earlier promotions will receive the unlimited space for music at no additional cost.

In March, Amazon launched Cloud Drive (www.amazon.com/clouddrive), Amazon Cloud Player for Web (www.amazon.com/cloudplayer), and Amazon Cloud Player for Android (www.amazon.com/cloudplayerandroid).

Together, these services enable customers to securely store music in the cloud and play it on any Android phone, Android tablet, Mac or PC, and now iPad, wherever they are.  Customers can easily upload their music library to Amazon Cloud Drive and can save any new Amazon MP3 purchases directly to their Amazon Cloud Drive for free.

      Sorry, that first comment didn’t make much sense. Simply put, can a person get unlimited music storage from Amazon Cloud Drive without paying anything? The press release is a little confusing as the “Storage for Music and More” section seems to contradicts the ”Unlimited Space for Music” section…

        No, it says you have to purchase a plan first for the unlimited music to kick in. But the $20/20GB plan is practically free because you automatically are upgraded to that if you buy at least one mp3 every year.

    Sorry Amazon, Google music wins on every level. Better uploading, better interface and much, much better mobile app. I had cloud player first, but when gmusic dropped it was a no brainier.

      I wouldn’t call Google Music a no-brainer just yet.  They still have some issues/bugs to work through and you still can’t buy new music through GM….yet.

        sounds like you have a poor connection then, friend.  Amazon forces you to use that crappy uploader while Google allows you to select a folder and forget about it.  That’s what I mean by better.

        As to the people who need the purchasing aspect – that’s a good point.  I despise iTunes and refuse to buy anything from there so I’m used to moving my music around, so dropping it into my music flder after purchase doesn’t affect me.

      No store and the streaming quality is mediocre. Amazon’s app also has a feature I absolutely love, “Add to Now Playing”. It’s not really a no-brainer. I prefer Amazon MP3.

    The one single factor keeping me from embracing Google Music over Amazon is that with Amazon you can redownload your music as much as you want, and with Google, once your music goes into the Cloud, that’s where its gonna stay.

    And i just checked my Amazon music library, and I was upgraded from the 20gb plan to the unlimited wooo.  If they keep this option for $20 a year and added a Metadata editor, I’d def go with Amazon.

    I tried it, but since 3G or higher service is not available here from ANY carrier, it is useless.   And I do NOT live in the middle of the desert, just 40 miles from a Top 50 metro area.

    I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores.     amazon is offering this only because of the pending threat of iCloud….. I’m  developer and I’ve been testing out iCloud for about a month now, it will be the amazon and google music killer…. no uploading, and downloading, no waiting for your music to stream….you have all your music on the fly,, also music, pictures and apps do not count on iCloud…and they give 5 gigs to store other stuff,,,, for free!!!!! 

    amazon and google might have been the first to the cloud music party, but apple is doing it the right way,, stay tuned….

      MUsic on the fly.. Do you mean iCloud will maintain/sync your music on your devices.. another words you have to use your own storage on your own devices, correct ?

        i mean that you don’t have to carry around 3k worth the songs on your phone anymore, i also can say that at home iOS 5 and iTunes will wirelessly sync your playlist, music etc..

        as far as storage,, iCloud is going to really help that 16 gig iphone really hold about 60 gigs,, think of it this way,, you take a pic,, it goes to the cloud,, you have a thumbnail on your device, you also have that picture on your mac or pc at home, you can download it on either,, or you can leave it in the cloud. 1000 photos, 

        music wise, iTunes has all your purchased songs in the Cloud, you feel like playing a song or looking for a song, its there for you to download, now i know your thinking download? thats data on my phone, well thats the only kicker, but a song over 3g is like 4mb,, i mean 2 gig plan is how many songs??? 

        so far in my testing my iphone has not used up nearly 2 gig of data, over the past month, and I’m a power user, i don’t do video, but songs, pics, and web,, last month was not even 1 gig,,,
