Sony to launch PlayStation 4 in 2012, report claims

Gaming

Sony’s manufacturing partners will begin building the consumer electronics giant’s next-generation video game console toward the end of this year, with a launch scheduled for 2012, DigiTimes reports. Details surrounding Sony’s PlayStation 4 are very limited for the time being, but the report states that the new console will feature integrated movement-based controls similar to the Microsoft Kinect controller. Foxconn and Pegatron, the two manufacturing firms charged with assembling Sony’s PlayStation 3, will build the new console according to DigiTimes’ sources. 2012 shipment volume for the PS4 is said to be at least 20 million units. Sony’s PlayStation 4 was not expected to launch until 2013 or 2014, but with Nintendo’s Wii U launching next year and Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox due to be unveiled in 2012 as well, it is possible that Sony accelerated the new console’s development in order to remain competitive. Sony’s current PlayStation 3 console has sold more than 51 million units globally since its launch in November 2006.

It’s good that they’re getting out there soon. One of the reasons they fell behind is because the 360 had an entire year in the market before the PS3 was even available.

That said, they had better know what they’re doing… I’d hate to see them rush it to market only to see less than stellar quality control.

Agreed. I have always thought that the main reason xbox “won” the race is that they got it out first and people didnt want to buy two consoles.

That’s absolutely what it was… gaming today is a social event. So if your friends all bought a 360 before the PS3 was even on shelves, then most people are going to get what their friends have. The 360, in almost all aspects, isn’t as good as the PS3. But none of that matters if your circle of friends all have the same crappy console. You’re going to want to play online with them.

lets not forget the $600 price tag

    • Gcombs

I doubt this. I believe they will announce a new console but it will go on sale holiday season 2013. The next gen of consoles will not be a leap in tech so Sony can take some time to build.

Another reason they fell behind was the damn price tag…. which made a PS fan like me just get a 360 at the time.

      • Anonymous

True, but people like me saw the value in it, regardless of price. At the time, you got so much more and didn’t have to buy things like wifi adapters and proprietary hard drives.

      • Anonymous

to be honest at that time no one really card about BluRay. It was unproven since HDDVD was around too.  They were just trying to force it on their fan base when all most of us wanted was just a Gaming console

      • Anonymous

People DID care about HD though. And with the 360, you had to buy that as an add-on. So again, the value for the console cost was there.

The problem was that most people don’t see past the shelf price. That’s all they compare.

      • Matthew

i agree with you thats why i also bought a ps3, also the xbox 360′s that first came out i dont even think they had an hdmi port.

      • Anonymous

Most people chose not to buy a wifi adapter or proprietary hard drive. Yeah, PS3 had more stuff in the box, but it was stuff a lot of people didn’t want or need.

As much as I love playing Tiger Woods The Masters 2012 with Playstation Move, I don’t want to play every game by moving.  What is with this new generation of gaming?  Sometimes I want to be lazy and sit and play video games.  If I wanted to work out I would go to the gym and actually work out.

    • Anonymous

Agreed. But it isn’t like they’re taking away traditional gaming. That will always be around because you aren’t the only one who thinks that way.

My bigger problem is that I don’t want it built in. I’d rather have a cheaper console and offer the movement-based gaming as an accessory.

While it makes sense as PS3 has been out for a long time, it’d still piss me off.

I just got PS3 this past Christmas for the Bluray capability and some GT5 action.

There’s always someone who just bought an electronic who whines about a new one coming out…

Think of this way – you saved $300 since you didn’t buy it at launch.

But your cant play ps2 games, and has 2 less usb ports so when your charging your iphone while watching a movie off a usb stick and your controller dies your in a bit of a tight spot. I got a slim :(

      • Anonymous

PS2 games is admittedly a letdown… but I found myself not caring much after a couple months. As for the USB ports, I can’t say I’ve ever once needed more than two. My PS Eye takes up one at all times, and I occasionally need to plug in a thumb drive. My controllers are docked next to my couch, so that takes care of that. And why in the world are you charging your iPhone off of your PS3? It came with a charger.

If all else fails, USB hubs can be had for literally a couple bucks.

      • Jcray

I know that is the biggest problem.  However other than GTA San Andreas I have at no time wanted to play a PlayStation 2 game

That’s a great tip–always charge whatever item you can charge over USB when you’re using your gaming console.  It already uses a set amount of power and nearly insignificant amount more when a USB device is plugged in.  But a wall charger (charging wireless headphones, smartphones, tablets…) will use double to triple the ‘extra’ power as it will if you simply add the charging to the already powered-on console you’re using anyway.

Too soon for me. I’m still enjoying my PS3.
Competitively speaking, it’s the right move to launch a console with your competitors or before them. It’s a mistake to launch a new console late.

    • Dejan Jancevski

While I do agree that launching early or along with the competition is generally a good idea, you also want to be the best.  Has Sony done THAT poorly with the PS3?  No, obviously it hasn’t since many (like myself) own one.  Additionally, many of those Xbox 360 owners are now starting to buy up the PS3 for the gaming+BluRay compatibility.  Hmmm…why?  Because the games are (albeit arguably) better looking and you don’t need a separate BluRay DVD player.  Plus…unlike even today’s Xbox 360, the PS3 doesn’t need to “upscale” to get 1080p, it does it naturally.  Just saying.

I think if Sony opted to concentrate on releasing more stellar games, then the PS4 could wait for a solid 3 or even 4 more years.  I mean, honestly, just how much better are the graphics going to get?  3D is still junk (if you ask me), and most people still own 720p HD TVs.  Heck, even I am waiting to see how this Mitsubishi Lazervue TV pans out (i.e., will they continue producing them, or is the line defunct)…so if that state-of-the-art isn’t worth upgrading to, then why bother with a PS4?!?  I think Sony could very easily argue that they don’t need to put out a PS4 anytime soon.   Just say that there isn’t any real reason to update from the PS3 until there is a major jump either in console memory demand, or the graphics are so intense that the console needs a serious upgrade.  I don’t see either of those being the case.  So…as a result, what this REALLY tells me is that Microsoft and Nintendo realize just how limited their current consoles are and they are both trying to keep up with Sony.   Trust me, the PS3 has serious legs.  Sony, in my view, shouldn’t release the PS4 until serious upgrade requirements are deemed necessary (at least when compared to the PS3 hardware).

I think a 2012 launch is more to the affect of the PS3 being jailbroken.  Playstation systems usually have a very long shelf live, and this for Playstation seems a bit short.  I think they had to go against their own plans because the system was compromised, i dont think this has anything to do with the Wii-U or Xbox “720.”

    • Bullet Tooth Tony

Playstation 4 doesn’t mean PS3 ceases to exist… PSX came out in 1994… last game for it was released in 2005 despite the PlayStation 2 being released in 2000, and 1 short year before the PS3 was due to hit.  PS3 of course came out in 2006… and PS2 is still seeing new games for it — at worst, they’ll drop all the EA Sports games this year.  Compromised?  Sure… but so was the playstation and PS2.  I think it’s everything about competition, and opening up the large revenue profits a new console can bring… but I think MS and Sony are in for a surprise… both consoles still seem fresh.  There’s no giant leap in technology to make, even though they’ll both certainly be touting 1080p 3D games… it just doesn’t pack the punch that the leap to HD had…

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

i hate people who spam this junk on sites

    • Neozeed

Are you kidding me?  Well I got a 5 bedroom 4 bathroom apartment in New York city for $5,000!  And then I bought myself a Ferrari, and a Porsche for only $17.99!

The next day I bought the USS Intrepid for $5, and the statue of Liberty for $3.50

I’m already in talks for buying the moon for $0.05!!!!

  • Matthew

I am so happy to hear that new consoles will be coming out in a year or two.  The games now are good but the graphics are feeling dated.  I don’t really care much about the new wii coming out but the new xbox and ps4 will be exciting. With all the new developments that have been made throughout the years like smaller chips and SOC hopefully the new gaming consoles wont be over $500 in the begining.

  • Matthew

I wonder if sony is going to stick with an improved version of what they are using in the PS3 or just use a completely new cpu.

    • Gcombs

Sony did say that they will still utilize the cell processor but I’m guessing and advanced one or two maybe.

  • Mack Abston II

Am i the only one who thinks Sony should use the above picture to market the new console?

  • bob

if the new consoles got a fat price tag like last time, expect to see even poorer sales than last time

  • Anonymous

Dang, I am still using my PS 2, guess i will just wat for the PS4 asnd skip the PS3 altogether.
