Google’s Chrome web browser now has 20.7% of web browser global market share at cost of IE, Firefox

Software

According to the analytics firm StatCounter, Google’s Chrome web browser now has a 20.7% grip of the web browser market — seven times more than it had just two years ago. The boost comes at the cost of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser, which now has less than a 50% hold on the market. Mozilla’s Firefox web browser has a 28% share of the browser market, down from 30% two years ago, and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer share fell to 44% from 59% two years ago. According to Reuters, StatCounter gathers its data from more than 3 million websites with more than 15 billion page views.

Of course. Google Chrome is pretty awesome. Plus it doesn’t take a lot to be better than IE. Though in Microsoft’s defense, the newest version is much better.

Internet Explorer is the number one browser used to download other browsers…..

IE has way more than 50% marketshare.

statcounter is a JOKE of a website to use as a source of marketshare. it was made 2 years ago and is basically some guy in his basement updating the stats with no background knowledge of the data. after researching that website you linked to I am not sure if “StatCounter” is a reliable source for anything beyond a pretty graph.

google chrome is pretty awesome if you enjoy an internet advertising company monitoring what websites you go to. also if you enjoy the worst version of ‘adblock,” and if you enjoy a browser that does not support the industry video standard h.264 because google must FORCE their own vp8 agenda.

    • Cameron

Google does not monitor each site Chrome users go to. If it did, people wouldn’t use it.

Most people don’t use adblock, and Chrome still has a version. Although a valid concern if this is important to you.

Chrome dropping h.264 is irelevent. It’s just symbolic. Chrome still supports Flash, so Nobody using Chrome is going to notice.

if you like an advertising company watching what sites you go to, and
blocking adblock from working correctly, and not having h.264 video
        support, than yea, its awesome.

Ok? So which browser do you use? You think IE or Firefox don’t track you? Keep dreaming.

      • Testfgurj

Haha. Google even monitors your Gmail to serve you ads. I am pretty sure they monitor chrome. They also keep logs of your searches. This is why I cannot use chrome or any google products. This is how they make their money. Free is not really free.

Because nobody else monitors what you do on the internet. GTFO

This report validates my feelings on Chrome.
I haven’t tried IE 9 yet but Chrome by far offers the best web browsing experience on a PC.  Firefox 5.0 is very good too.  IE is super slow and Safari 5.0.x has too many javascript problems and crash all the time for me on my mac.
This reminds me … MS use to get in trouble all the time for bundling a browser with an OS – now everyone is doing the same.  Netscape is not around to complain I guess.

I stopped using Chrome when it wouldn’t render pages and sites properly that belonged to the competition.

    • Anonymous

I am addicted to the light-ness of Chrome (speedy!) but unfortunately just when I think I can stick to Chrome it does something odd with page rendering or plugin-related problems.  For now I’m going to stick with FF.

  • Anonymous

Awesome, finally people realize chrome is the best browser out there. Why? Because it kicked mozilla into realizing javascript speed matters and it renders almost all sites perfectly due to testing and feigning as other browsers that are supported. Only support IE? no problemo.

Firefox doesn’t have a chance. Go ahead and vote me down mozilla lovers but you know that firefox currently blows.

Google will track all your gay porn sites and start trying to sell you anal lube by the gallon. But hey, maybe that is what you want.

Someone have some first hand experience?

      • http://twitter.com/FoobarMe00 Larry

        more like right hand experience

  • Anonymous

Damn IE is dropping like a rock, Chrome and firefox are both pretty good but I prefer Safari cause I really don’t like all the distraction. Damn Microsoft has really become a sinking ship.

    • http://twitter.com/FoobarMe00 Larry

dude no one uses safari, even 50% of gay community thinks safari is too gay.

    • marc

Distraction?  Chrome has very little distraction.

I’m loving all this GOO news. It makes me all hot and bothered.

    • Mac

You better wipe up that goo before your mom comes down to the basement and sees it.

You guys should probably stop using the old Chrome logo, as Google has sanctified the new vector-based logo everywhere.

  • Outtaammo2

i think it is more related to chrome being bundled with apps we actually use.  too many users dont know how to say no to this extra garbage.  i have worked on many systems that show chrome, but none of the users actually use it or any of the other bloatware that comes with systems nowadays.

As opposed to safari in itunes and ie in windows

  • QNX Please

Surprised it has taken this long, Firefox is absolute garbage now and IE 9 is slow as molasses. Chrome is the only browser worth talking about, too bad not all webpages are optimized for Chrome.

    • Anonymous

IE is slow than a mug, I can’t stand it. Chrome all the way! The takeover

    • Anonymous

ie9 is slow? are you kidding me? go look up a sunspider test, or browser comparison on youtube. youre kidding or a blind chrome fanboy.

      • John

slow or not. i still can’t believe they haven’t integrated an effin spell checker (native spell checker) into the browser! it’s almost 2012!

      • Anonymous

Yes, it is much slower than Chrome in real world navigation, not synthetic benchmarks. Try it yourself. It’s rather obvious. The interface is also quite clunky in comparison.

    R.I.P. IE and Firefox

    Google = The Takeover

    • John

they keep making it as fast as it is & i’ll have no problem with that.

  • guest

people have more chooses when they use browsers since 2009.for instance, chrome ,ie,avant browser .opera .firefox …..and so on .nevertheless ,do you know which one fit you ?

Google Chrome:    Give me a Sidebar where I can have my Bookmarks visible all the time like Firefox and I will switch in a heartbeat.   Until then, no way.    Drop-down Bookmark display extensions just don’t cut it, I want the Sidebar.

    • TomRowly

Ctrl + Shift + B   will show/hide the bookmarks bar. Maybe you disabled it without noticing it, I did that first time using it :P

      • http://twitter.com/ggore Glenn Gore

Not the Bookmarks Bar, I mean a Sidebar, like Firefox has.    Click View on the toolbar in Firefox and you get your choice of Toolbars or Sidebar, Sidebar giving you a complete list of your Bookmarks however you have them organized.  Extremely handy and you don’t have to scroll through an entire list every time you want to go to another of your favorite sites.   Google Chrome does not have this function and no one has ever come up with an Extension to do so either for some reason.

Chrome stole me away from FF. Love it.

  • Detroitdecay

chrome is just so easy to use. i was a firefox kinda guy.  but after chrome came out i fell in love.

  • http://gionet.ca Jean Gionet

seriously the best up to date/always current web browser out there! Profile/Password syncing is the feature I love the most!

  • Kevin Jones

Chrome 4 life baby!  At first I hated Chrome when it first came out, but the speed kept me coming back.

  • EricO

I think Chrome is a good browser, although I don’t feel that I can make it my main browser because it feels to simplistic and lacking in features – still after 3 years since it was released.  I particularly don’t like the lack of a separate search bar.  I wish Google would get with it a bit and add what’s missing.

  • http://spacetimecruise.blogspot.com Udipta

I am not surprised. Chrome just keeps getting better everyday.
