AT&T to offer standard iPhone insurance beginning July 17th

mobile

AT&T has announced that it will offer standard insurance to iPhone owners beginning on July 17th. Previously, AT&T subscribers were able to sign up for a more expensive $12 monthly insurance plan, which had a $199 deductible. Protection will now cost just $4.99 per month with the standard plan and it is expected to have a $125 deductible, which covers all models of the iPhone for loss, accidental physical or liquid damage, theft, and mechanical or electrical failure. “Effective July 17, 2011, the Apple iPhone (all models) will be eligible for coverage with the AT&T Mobile Insurance program (formerly Wireless Phone Insurance),” AT&T said in a statement on its mobile insurance page. “Enrollment restrictions apply. Customers can only enroll within 30 days of a new activation or upgrade, prior activations or upgrades outside of 30 days are not eligible.”

      How exciting.

Wow, congratulations buddy! What do you win (besides reputation as a dumbass)?

  • Noketchup

That’s not an actual photo of an iPhone 4. Look at the mute button.

      Huh?

What are you going on about?

This is probably good for clumsy, forgetful people. Besides a broken screen ($13 to fix yourself) I’ve never met anybody to have issues with the iPhone.

Here comes the Fraud…”at&t had a record high of 5 Million Iphones Lost in the month of July” lolz

I imaging they would be able to disable the phone from connecting to any network (by IMEI) until it is ‘found’ again. You would then just have an oversize iPod touch, and considering you paid $800 for it  (or 2 years on contract; 3 for Canadians) it wouldn’t be worth it.

This is the same insurance scheme as T-mobile and its smartphone coverage…how coincidental!!!!

    • Anonymous

I actually really do think its coincidental . . .  I mean the iPhone never had insurance… other phones did

      • Anonymous

Actually I believe it had more expensive $12 a month insurance.

That wasn’t from At&t . . . it was from Asurion through their own app in the App Store.

My god….how much $$$ consumers could have saved over the past 4 years if they would have just started it from the beginning…

      /sarcasm, right?

Can you add or cancel the insurance at any time? Seems like you could just add it to your plan when you break your phone and get a “new” (refurb) iPhone for $130. Sounds like a pretty good deal… if the Apple store doesn’t replace your broken phone, you know “just this one time”.

It has to be within 30 days of purchase.

    • Googleishorrible

Did you read the post? Is stated ONLY within a 30 day enrollment period when you buy the new phone!

      • Anonymous

Ok, so you “enroll” within 30 days of purchasing. But can you cancel and then reactivate? I doubt it, but so you get my drift?

Seems like AT&T would be better off offering anytime/no questions asked replacement iPhones for $150 to $200 bucks. It would be a definite edge over the competition .

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

I have seen you spamming engadget and now boy genius with this junk, stop.

Your move vzw. 12 bucks plus 170 deductible is a tax on those who suck at math.

I pay $15 a month for Best Buy’s insurance which, by the way, DOES NOT cover lost/stolen.

So, Best Buy, either reduce the price or I’m dropping it (although I pray nothing happens to my iDevice)

    dont buy insurance…

if you destroy your iphone…go to an apple store and theyll sell you a refurb replacement for $200.

  • Drew

And yet again we see another ploy of at&t to try and retain subscribers… Insurance through at&t for the iPhone after 4 years?? C’mon…

Now, if only they would offer a functional 3G network in NYC…

  • jp3L

    Insurance is a scam.

I pay $6 a month and it would cost an additional $90 to replace my Droid X. If I drop it and it shatters, if I lose it or it gets stolen, if I run it over with my truck, water damage, etc. I get a replacement overnighted.

Insurance is not for everybody but for me I’d rather have peace of mind knowing I won’t have to shell out $500+ for a new phone. If I don’t file a claim I’m out a couple $100, If I do file a claim I win. It’s a gamble some people are comfortable with…

That’s a way better deal than before, but the deductible is still too high and there’s a two claim limit, and if you don’t get it within 30 days you are SOL.  I’d say if you’re buying a new iPhone 3 plan, then that’s the way to go because those will have a 50 dollar deductible.  If you’re not, you’re better off still going with Worth Ave. Group.

Don’t sign up for this! It is going up to $6.99 per month plus a $199 deductible as of 10/1. They won’t tell you this when you sign up!! I was told everything was covered for $4.99 per month with no deductible. Then after being billed, I get a letter telling me the iPhone is not eligible for this rate! The iPhone insurance is $11.99 per month plus a $199 deductible! So if after one year you need to replace your phone, it would cost you $342.88 plus activation fee of $35 and taxes on the total amount. Over $400!!!! Save your money, AT&T lies, and has an insurance partner “Asurion” or “Continental Casualty Company” DO NOT tell you about the “fine print” I love the iPhone, HATE THE COMPANY!!! eing billed, I get a letter telling me the iPhone is not eligible for this rate!
